ORIGINAL: djskillz Heard a piece this morning with Jason Stark. Was talking about how Manfred is going to make a lot of people in baseball (players, fans, teams, union) uncomfortable because he would make baseball much more relevant in the pop culture. ie lots more endorsements of players individually, lots more "star" stuff wherein right now it's always been more team oriented and guys are kind of toned down by teams/managers. Pretty interesting to hear. The Minnesota Dinosaur and Okie will cringe at that. "We don't do things that way here, sir!" I could see even players taking issue with it to some extent. I'm sure he's talking about a lot more access to players, a lot more showboating allowed, etc. But it must be done to try to catch up with the rest of the sports world. Should be interesting. Personally, I think it's going to be VERY tough for baseball to ever catch up. The NBA has fantastic world footholds already; probably the sport of the future when you think about how much the world is shrinking and how "star driven" a basketball team can be with only 5 starters. And football obviously dominates sports currently for coverage. Baseball has killed itself marketing-wise for 30 years, at least.
