Saw it live - very frightening. Worse when they showed the replay with sound. He probably would have avoided being hit in the face but it looked like he was fooled by the pitch and started to swing at it.

Seems like people have kept talking about this "bad" year Liriano is having after a great one last year. Really?

He's got a 3.53 ERA (identical FIP) and is striking out 10.0 per 9, which is his highest K rate since 2006. Also his 2nd lowest walk rate since 2010. 2.22 ERA with even better K numbers in the 2nd half this year and has really helped lead the Pittsburgh resurgence.

Would kill to have him (maybe literally) as he'd still be our best pitcher. We never should have let him go. We should have let Rick go instead.

Wonder if this will hurt Stanton's MVP chances? I suppose it will. That's unfortunate.

Stanton, Heyward, and McCutcheon are all deserving in the NL. In the AL for me it's either Trout or Donaldson.

It grows clearer every day that Liriano wasn't some "headcase" and that he was incredibly misused by this organization. Overworked in both 2008 (his first year back from TJ) and 2010, not to mention misusing him in 2006 (ie typical Twins rest/rehab approach). Which completely changed the trajectory of his career. As soon as he got away from Rick, like seemingly everyone else, he re-blossomed.

When is someone going to be be held accountable?

Vance Worley has still been really solid himself, BTW. 3.18 ERA on the year now (96.1 innings) with a 3.66 FIP. 6.5/2.1 K/BB ratios.

Baker has a nice WHIP and decent xFIP too, after a very rough start.

When someone finally gets it thru the Pohlads head that doubling or tripling your intake of money .... DUE TO TEAM SUCCESS ..... (and not relying solely on the facility) ..... is a good thing.

Lohse, Worley, Garza, Liriano would have been a helluva lot better than Nolasco, Correia, Pelfry and whomever.

But than Nolasco would probably have been better pitching under the watchful eye of anyone not name Rick Anderson.

RA has to go.

I love the idea that if RA is only signed through 2014, then don't renew his contract and Gardy will probably step down. A very workable idea.

However, any organization that had any spine whatsoever would ask Gardy to step down first. Or TR then Gardy. I don't care what the order is. Just make some changes.

I gotta think that Hughes success is more a function of getting out of NYC than anything this organization has done to help him.

Twins most important asset when evaluating their own pitchers:

They have to like his make up.

Hear it time and time again, we like his make up.

Guys that fall out of favor are the Liriano, Garza, Lohse, Baker types. Branded as hard-headed, stubborn by Gardenhire/Anderson.

Gardy seemingly has a One size fits all style of handling clubhouse personalities. That is all he can do, he is like a 1 pitch pitcher. Old school doesn't work any longer with today's ballplayers, pitcher's especially. And Anderson is just along for the ride. He is worthless. I don't even blame him any more, he is just tied to Gardenhire.

A couple years ago when Andy was getting heat, TR defended him in saying there is a lot more to a pitching coach then results on the field. You have to look at everything. It is keeping a staff healthy through the season and especially keeping a bullpen healthy all season long and Andy/Gardy excel at that.

LOL.

Good stuff guys. A couple things:

1) So right on the personalities, Stacey. That's what bugs me most about the labels of Gardy as some great coach/manager of personalities. It's pretty easy to manage a clubhouse full of focused, good guys. But you actually have to, you know, manage to get through to young guys like Lohse/Garza, etc. And I find it hard to believe that those guys were all that tough to control anyway.

2) The money is kind of amazing. You know what a rotation of Liriano/Garza/Lohse/Worley/Gibson would have cost us this year? $30.530M You know what we spent on Hughes/Nolasco/Pelfrey/Correia/Gibson? $31.0025M

I'll take things that are depressing for $500 Alex.

Baseball players make a highly specialized and extremely valuable contribution to a nearly $9 billion industry. People around the world spend that $9 billion for no other reason than some 750 players entertain us by doing what hardly anyone else on the planet can do. Baseball players are creating value in terms of butts in seats, hot dogs and beer consumed and team merchandise sold. So why shouldn’t they be paid for it?

If anything, they should be paid more for it. Sure, salaries are rising, but they aren’t keeping up with rising baseball revenues. As Matt Swartz of The Hardball Times noted in March, since 2002, the average major league baseball team payroll has gone up by 58 percent. Meanwhile, baseball revenue has gone up by 122 percent. Over that same period of time, total baseball player salaries as a share of revenue have declined from 56 percent to 40 percent. Baseball players are routinely singled out even among other professional athletes for their allegedly unreasonable salaries, but baseball has the lowest percentage of total revenue going to player salaries than the other three major North American sports, all of which pay players around 50 percent of revenues.
