ORIGINAL: MDK When Lester came to Boston and said he wanted an extension before he hit FA in Spring 14, Boston offered 4 years at $70 million. Love it when Boston demonstrates its stupidity. As Buster Olney said, Boston should just come out and admit that they screwed up. Lester wanted to retire as a Red Sox. Twins did the same thing with Hunter when they failed to extend him a year before he hit FA and then when he hit FA, offered him 3 years when the Angels gave him 5. Twins (TR) = Boston = idiots Lester was an average pitcher in 2012 and 2013...Red Sox offered him four years and $70 million. Definitely a fair price. He has a great 2014 (who knows, maybe he took PEDs?) and he gets the second richest contact ever offered to a SP??? WTH??? Really, PED's? A guy who has battled cancer? Yeah, I know it was a treatable cancer. He has a career 121 era+. He compares favorably to some pretty good pitchers before the age of 30. It was maybe a decent offer but look what happened when he hit the open market.....value skyrocketed. They, the Sox, probably could have signed him for 5 years at $100. Among other incentives negotiated by Lester and his agents, Seth and Sam Levinson, the deal includes a signing bonus of $30 million to be paid over the life of the contract and a full no-trade clause. Lester will earn $145 million between his base salary and signing bonus and receive either a $10 million buyout after six seasons or a $25 million vesting option for the 2021 season that could bring Lester's total take to $170 million, a source familiar with terms of the contract told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. The option would vest if Lester pitches at least 200 innings in 2020 or at least 400 in the 2019 and 2020 seasons combined. Boston could have had him for a lot less than what he got from the Cubs. Yeah, a pro athlete on PED's...shocking. Do you live in a cave? Lance Armstrong had cancer too. Jeff Why can't you engage in an intelligent discussion instead of being a prick and an asshole. Everyone in cycling engages in doping. Not everyone in baseball does. Your logic that he engages in PED's for the year he had his career year indicates that while you might not live in a cave, you know very little about PED's. They don't immediately turn you from average to superstar.....the positive effects happens over time. Now if Lester took PED's to recover from his cancer in 2007, then we should have seen a gradual improvement. The original point was that by Boston failing to recognize in advance the market value of Lester, they ended up negotiating at a much higher level than they would have had they gone higher before he entered his FA. The amounts you frequently propose for signings given the market realities of baseball indicate you are the one living in a cave. Players get a lot more than what you indicate is a fair price. The amounts I propose are amounts I would pay. Therefore, brainiac, if the actual deal exceeds my proposal than it's too much in my opinion on an opinion board. And you're wrong about PED use...see Brady Anderson and a hundred other players who have career years. Taking PED's can give pitchers a few more MPH on the fastball and certainly help with recovery time. Not saying Lester was on PED's, but who knows? It's freaking baseball. With guaranteed contracts, I wouldn't give pitchers more than 2-3 year contracts unless you have an unlimited budget which the Twins don't have. Give Ervin Santana $55 million a year after the Nolasco fiasco is lunacy. There is no way Ervin Santana makes Twins' fans say "GREAT DEAL" in October, 2018 when the deal is up. At least when Ervin leaves after four years he can take POS Mauer with him.
