Considering the man already has a statue, retiring Paul Konerko's jersey number was the obvious next step for the White Sox to take to honor their longtime slugger.
The date of the ceremony to retire Konerko's No. 14 has been set for May 23, when Chicago hosts the Twins.

"Paul Konerko is one of the greatest players in White Sox history, not only for his strength and performance on the field, but also for his heart and leadership off the field," White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. "Paul was a humble leader whose passion for the game earned the respect and love of the entire clubhouse and fans all over the country. We honor Paul by retiring his number and welcoming him to the ranks of White Sox legends."

The first 20,000 fans through the turnstiles at U.S. Cellular Field on that Saturday afternoon will receive a replica of the Konerko statue that sits on the concourse in left-center field.

It is interesting how this company started........they were to first to design, manufacture and sell timers that were placed on mats during wrestling matches so that the wrestlers could keep track of time if I recall correctly. They started the company by producing electronic voting devices for state legislators.

Status: offline 		The Cell is now the 9th oldest park. And of course 3 of those in front of it are never going to be torn down (Fenway/Wrigley/Dodger Stadium) and/or have gone through MAJOR transformations. Wrigley will never be the same starting this year IMO.

Oakland and TB have been fighting their fights for years and Kauffman is very nice now with the renovations. So honestly, the Cell, Rogers (TOR) and the Angels' stadium are probably the next targets. None of the other 19+ year old parks should do anything soon. Camden/Progressive/Arlington/Coors are all very nice parks. And Atlanta's new one opens in 2017.

The parks in baseball really are awesome right now.

You can take the L right to the Cell. Super convenient. Personally I liked the stadium. Dave "flew in" and out the same day for one of the 3 games my wife and I went to several years ago. Lawyers.

This is not being judgemental because I know what you are saying about stadiums/obsolete, etc.

But just because it presumably makes financial sense, viewing a 19 year old stadium as obsolete....

What kind of environmental footprint does that produce. I mean...why tear down, why not renovate.

There are people in Rome that want to renovate the coliseum and use it again.

Our throw away society will be unsustainable.......

Unless we convert completely to solar energy and completely recycle everything.

It was absolutely asinine to build the Dome on the cheap and then tear it down after 30+ years.

Build it to last and to be retrofitted when the time demands it.

Status: offline 		Miles, we're actually on the same page as far as that. I totally agree.

Just saying more of a realistic "they" will be looking to renovate those ones next. After TB/Oakland (likely moves) get resolved, CWS/TOR/LAA are next. I like the new parks as a fan, even though Fenway/Wrigley are two of the very best. But from a value and social standpoint, I couldn't agree more with you.

Status: offline 		Brewers close to dealing Gallardo to the Rangers. Will be curious what they get in return and also how he pitches in Arlington. Makes sense for the Brewers if the return is good though. That division is extremely tough now and I don't think they have the horses to keep up with the Cards/Pirates/Cubs now. Plus, they probably can't keep him after this year so makes sense to go young.

Nats supposedly about to sign Scherzer. Though expected, that would be a big blow to the Tigers. Nats' staff is LOADED. If it happens, do they keep Zimmerman and let him walk in FA after a playoff run? Or do they deal him before the season or at the deadline?

Status: offline 		Agree, Ed. If Scherzer's getting that, what's Price going to get next offseason????????

I think this helps Hamels' trade value really. His contract isn't "that" unreasonable. Basically amounts to a 4 year/$100M deal. If we could get them to take Nolasco while giving up 1-2 guys not named Buxton/Sano/Meyer, I'd strongly consider it.

Geez. Can't see that ending well. Especially since the Nats continue to get screwed by Angelos in the rights-sharing.

MONDAY 10:40am: Scherzer will receive $210MM for seven years of work, but the contract has an unusual structure, with Scherzer receiving $15MM per season for the next 14 years, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. That means the Nationals will be paying Scherzer through 2028. Also, Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan tweets that the deal includes a $50MM signing bonus that will be paid out “over a portion of time” for tax reasons. That bonus would, presumably, be included in the $210MM total. As Passan notes, the deferral makes the contract worth about $185MM in present-day dollars. The structure of the contract and Washington DC tax laws could ultimately save Scherzer over $20MM, however, Passan reports. Scherzer’s deferral is, obviously, the largest one in MLB contract history, leaving Bobby Bonilla and the Mets’ lengthy $29.8MM deferral in the dust.

And as Buster Olney points out, they'll likely trade Jordan Zimmerman and not really be any better off than they were before the deal. Idiots.
