Trade for LeCroy, although I have no idea how long he can last as a catcher. He seems pretty broken down.

There is no way TR would go after Price or Greinke....

Too True.

But I don't care if he has to add $50 mil to the budget. I would go like gangbusters at signing both of them.

Did TR kick your dog, Trekkie?

I don't have a dog.
and TR has been holding this team back for decades..

Gardenhire, for his part, was diplomatic and wouldn’t confirm the offer in a recent MLB Network Radio appearance, but he spoke highly of GM A.J. Preller (links to Twitter). “A.J. is a brilliant young man,” said Gardenhire. “He’s pretty cool, a baseball junkie, loves to go out and scout. I like those things.” Gardenhire called the San Diego group as a whole “unbelievable.”

Zach Greinke apparently had an opt-out clause in his contract with the Dodgers. He was (is) still signed for another three years at something like $71 million. Not enough money you say? So Greinke decides to become a free agent knowing that the Giants are vying for his services. Well, I say screw you to Zach Greinke! I hope the guy has arm trouble the rest of his career. The greed has become beyond compare. Any team that signs him to a longer contract is simply insane. He may have another one good season, perhaps two, and three good seasons would be a long shot. The Dodgers contract would have paid him through what probably will be his last three decent seasons, if that. Signing him to more money for more season is simply beyond idiotic. And shame on Greinke for being such an asshole.

Opt outs are the new hedge by the upper level players, seeing how the market changes for $$$$

Tell me you wouldn't do that if you were a player.

Why wouldn't he opt out though? In 3 years he will have no leverage. He'll be older and may struggle to get another long-term deal. He's coming off one of his best seasons. He has to opt out. His agent would call him a moron if he didn't.

And this is exactly what is wrong with free agency in MLB. Why should Greinke have any leverage at age 35 or 36? He has been paid handsomely on several contracts. He has earned his keep. He is set up for life as a multi-multi millionaire. To endorse this kind of bullshit is preposterous! In addition, what about team loyalty? His team made it into the playoffs. Why jump teams? He already has a tremendous contract. Ask the Dodgers if they would extend him another two seasons and make his contract an even $100 million. I could maybe understand that. But to opt-out and become a free agent. I hope the guy gets arthritis and cannot throw another pitch the rest of his life.

I wouldn't. I would honor my contract. $61 million? Your lifestyle cannot possibly change if you have a $100 million net worth or $140 million net worth. You are splitting hairs. Not to mention the real issue that is team loyalty and, oh, by the way, you signed a frickin contract. Honor the damn thing!

This Greinke issue is exactly why the Twins should NEVER seek pitchers at the high end of the FA spectrum. I don't blame the Pohlads, TR, or anyone associated with the Twins for pursuing these shameful contracts. They NEVER EVER work out as a sound investment, especially with pitchers who are always one toss away from the DL or major surgery. Contract reform, a salary cap, or something has to be done to fix this insane issue.

Let me post this again.....

Carl Pohlad paid 40 million for the Twins in 1984. Today the team is worth 895 million.....much of the increase due to the tax payer funded stadium. A 2000 % increase in value in 30 years.

We can bitch about players but direct some of the angst toward greedy owners.

And hope that one day taxpayers/voters say F.U. to the whole professional sports enterprise.

Or don't go to games, don't watch the product on TV, don't listen to the product on radio and / or ignore all media regarding professional sports including social media.

I agree the entire system in MLB is corrupt. I also believe that one way to stop the insanity is to tax the owners on their respective fair market value increase in team value about every three years at ORDINARY tax rates. In other words, if the Dodgers franchise goes up in value $100 million in three years from 2015 to 2018, then you add $100 million of income to the tax return of the Dodgers owner(s) and that amount is taxed at their incremental tax rates (39.6% plus any additional medicare surtax that may apply at .9%). Believe me, if they did that, that would stop immediately the long-term contracts and the contracts at ridiculous incremental prices.

Agents AND teams have to agree to these things, so the team knows this could well happen.

Opt outs are in the NBA too.

It's part of the deal. it's a hedge on both sides.

If Greinke had struggled the past 2 years,no way does he opt-out. Because the market wouldn't pay him what he's getting.

That's the risk/reward of these types of contracts.

Does that make him an a-hole? that's a bit harsh.

That's why the Twins will not contend to win it all. And you can bee-otch about it every day, but unless the Twins take on risk, there will be no reward.

Both teams in the WS took the risk.

All 4 teams in the LCS took the risk.

Non-risk takers watched.

The Twins won't take the risk/reward.

They've already tried it on middling pitchers, with middling results. So they hide behind a "budget" and claim Ryan can add payroll
Which is a BS smokescreen.

This is entirely true Ed and a very vicious circle. We are literally "trapped" as Twins fans. We can bitch all we want (and many of us take liberties ), about how bad the system in MLB is and where it is headed. However, if you want to field a winning team, you have to play be the insane rules that have been adopted. Those who choose to play, can earn results. Those who do not, play the nickel and dime slots hoping for a $20-$50 payout.

Another excellent point. I think several in here would like to see the Twins offer Mauer early retirement. They owe him $69 million minimum as it stands according to what we read. Offer him $50 million to play one more season (2016) and hang it up. He can totally suck next season as part of this arrangement and he gets $50 million paid out as he prefers. Make it over ten or more years if he prefers to alleviate some of the tax burden. Alternatively, add a clause that says, the Twins will also extend his contract another season and make it $85 million if he has a stellar season in 2016 and they want him back for the remaining two years of his existing contract plus one more year.

Now, of course, all of you in here will argue, "why should Joe do anything?" He is under a no-trade contract and the Twins have to pay him. He can suck for the next three years and he gets $69 million. He can play a shitty first base or the Twins could eventually bench him (unlikely). Apparently, Mauer has shown that he is not embarrassed in the least by ill-performing. Sheople have been trained to believe that Joe is the "team's best player".

And there are a few in here lurking who may be in this camp. I know the Star Trib site is filled with Mauer apologists who argue Joe is still the best player on the team because of his .350ish BA with RISP last season. You can mention to these sheople that Joe batted .140 behind 0-2 in the count, .232 behind 1-2 in the count, and .165 at 2-2 count. And you can mention that Joe struck out 112 times last season.

But simply put, "Joe is the best player on the Twins roster, there is no disputing this fact."
