That's more along the lines I was thinking too
Young arms never get that long break anymore? (Between sports)

It just blows my mind that kids are expected to pick sports by the age of 10 to play year round.  Growing up, the only guys who played anything close to year round were the hockey players...and even they took a season off to play something else.

Fortunately in our area, they'll get to play multi sports.

Summer makes it tougher for baseballers. Basketball continues to intrude with summer leagues, so kids drop baseball for hoops.

Reading Cris Carter's book. Easy to understand how baseball falls by the wayside. In many areas, you don't have the $$ for the equipment, nor the space. But having a hoop to shoot at and one ball makes it easier for a lot of kids. That's one reason he says. The other is the stigma baseball has is? BORING is the description he gave it.

We hockey coaches encourage other sports
The more the better
Our seasons by far the longest
They need to play and do other things to avoid burnout

Our biggest problem is keeping kids playing hockey, because of the threat of injury, thus keeping them out of other sports.
We are usually full of really good golfers for some reason, state contenders even ... And they are all afraid of shoulder issues.
We often have some good baseball players as well.
Parents worry more about injury that way (taking time away from other sports) ...... Than the kids themselves do.

My daughter played volleyball, basketball, and softball as a freshman.  She gave up volleyball this year.  I'm glad she did as I think her body needs some down time.

My youngest played on the varsity softball, basketball, and track all 4 years. She did injure her back twice and broke both hands playing college softball.
I think she did it for me.

I look back and wonder if it was even fair as it took most all her free time.

The curious fall of Kubel

---------------

Former Twin Jason Kubel was designated for assignment Tuesday by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kubel hit 30 homers for the D-backs last year, the first year of his two-year contract, but this year was hampered by back and quad problems. He'd lost his starting job and leaves Arizona hitting a mere .220/.288/.324, a far cry from his career slash numbers (.265/.330/.456).

But Kubel's production really started its sudden dissolution last season. He entered last August hitting .290 with 22 home runs; in August he hit .159, in September he hit .186. And he never got going at any point this year.

He's 31. There ought to be some juice left in his bat. But if he's physically not able to show it in what remains of the 2013 season -- and that the D-backs are willing to dump him now suggests he's not -- it may be difficult for him to find a major league contract for 2014.

White Sox should take a flier on Kubel. Platoon him, he'll kill RHP in that bandbox.

The Indians announced, via Twitter, that they have reinstated right-hander Brett Myers from the 60-day disabled list and unconditionally released him.

Why the Twins have no chance on REAL Talent. Other teams go into "hyperdrive" after guys. Twins kick tires.

The success of imports like Hyun-Jin Ryu, Yoenis Cespedes, and Yasiel Puig in the state of California has led to the Giants rethinking their approach to the international market this winter. Sources tell Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com that the club's scouting department is going into hyperdrive with an eye on Japan's Masahiro Tanaka and Cuba's Jose Dariel Abreu.

The word hyperdrive hasn't been used around the Twins offices since Dominos did away with their 30 minute delivery guarentee.

No, they went into hyperdrive and ended up with Nishioka.

Can you blame them for not going into hyperdrive about others?

Seattle gets BALT's 10th best prospect

The Orioles made a pair of waiver claims with the hopes of bolstering their lineup this week, and Friday they were able to convert on one of them by acquiring Mike Morse from the Mariners in exchange for outfield prospect Xavier Avery. Both teams have announced the trade via press release.

Twins asked for too much

Earlier reports indicated that the Twins asked for top prospect Eduardo Rodriguez, causing Baltimore to back off.

LHP their #5 prospect.

Good thing we held onto a 7M dollar DH to play left field next season, because you know, we are contenders in 2014.

LHP their #5 prospect.

Background: Signed for $175,000 out of Venezuela, Rodriguez was one of few international splashes made by the Andy MacPhail regime. After making his U.S. debut in 2011, Rodriguez was Baltimore’s most improved prospect in 2012. He more than held his own as a 19-year-old in low Class A while doubling his innings total.

Scouting Report: Previously known as a command-and-feel lefty with a funky delivery, Rodriguez has developed into a different animal as he continues growing into his lanky frame. His tailing fastball now sits at 90-94 mph, and the ball comes out of his hand well. His secondary pitches are inconsistent but have shown improvement. Both his 80-84 mph slider and 82-84 mph changeup flash plus potential, with the slider more advanced at this stage. He’ll have at least average command. The Orioles have helped Rodriguez overhaul his delivery and get more on line toward the plate without robbing him of deception. He has benefited from committing to a consistent between-starts routine.

The Future: With Bundy and Gausman possibly graduating to the big leagues in 2013, Rodriguez could rank as the organization’s top pitching prospect a year from now. He likely will open the season in high Class A. He profiles as a mid-rotation starter, though some suggest he has an even higher ceiling.

To get this guy, we'd have had to pay his contract and someone else's. No way were they going to give this guy up for Wham.

"banking" is the same as "hoping"

Buster Olney

By not letting Willingham go on a waiver claim, Twins are banking on him rebounding, rather than looking to save $ by dumping his salary.

the pitching staff for 2014....heck the foreseeable future is not going to fix itself. 7M additional to spend on that this winter would not have hurt. If you're not going to win the WS in 2014 what does it matter if you have a hard hittin' 34-yr old DH playing LF or a patchwork motley crew out there ? Fred Davis, Nolan Reimold, Rick freakin' Ankiel could fill time for 2014 while they lose 90.
