Great leader
That's like taking on Tyson

This is year two of Pujols' contract. 8 more years at 24M/per.

Talk about finding a guy off the scrap-heap.

Lobaton now has 27 rbi's for TB. He was a horrid-hitting nobody before this.

As opposed to the Twins...who find a lot of guys off the crap heap.

Hardest-Throwing 2014 Free Agents
By Steve Adams [August 26 at 8:50am CST]
Earlier in the season, Tim Dierkes looked at the hardest throwers in this year's free agent class. A lot has changed since that list, and with just over a month of the season remaining, the current numbers should serve as a good indicator as to who the market's top flamethrowers will be. Using the 2014 Free Agent Leaderboards that I created using Fangraphs, here's an updated look at the hardest-throwing starters and relievers...

Starting Pitchers

Josh Johnson and Matt Garza-- 92.8 mph
Jason Hammel -- 92.7 mph
Jon Lester -- 92.6 mph ($13MM club option)
Phil Hughes, Ervin Santana and A.J. Burnett -- 92.4 mph
Edinson Volquez and Scott Kazmir -- 92.3 mph
Mike Pelfrey -- 92.2 mph
James Shields -- 92.1 mph ($12MM club option)
Roberto Hernandez -- 91.6 mph
Ubaldo Jimenez and Roy Oswalt -- 91.5 mph
Hiroki Kuroda -- 91.3 mph

Who do you like best of that crew (I'm assuming Garza wouldn't come here and Lester's option is picked up)?

Hughes/Santana?

When Pelfrey is on that list, it's a pretty underwhelming list.

He was hitting 94/95

Better than the slop-ballers they have.

Overall he stinks, but somewhat less than others.

Pelfrey may be worth a flier next year.  Remember that he came back on short time from TJ this year.  Guessing that he'd have a crappy year was almost a gimmee.  Next year he could be much better, his velocity is returning.

I never understood why they signed him to a 1 year contract.  Next year is the year you want him.  At least we should have had a team option.

Problem is .... WE know what we'd accept, and WE are looking at him as a four or five guy
Problem is .... THE TWINS ORG looks at him as a one or two

Huge disconnect

The twins look at Ploof and want to see a team-carrying power third baseman who makes no errors
Some of us see Ploof as a guy who would be a nice late option off the bench, or at most a platooner vs LH pitching.

The twins look at Dozier and want to see a spunky MI who sacs, squeezes, and runs around.
Some of us see Dozier as a guy with pop who should be left alone, and he'll surprise you.

The twins wanted JJ Hardy to be another spunky MI, look how that turned out.
Some of us saw a solid SS with pop in the bat, who never hurt us one tiny bit.

See where I'm going here?
I could do it with fifty more guys. Yes, fifty.
The realistic way players can help us, IMO ..... Is rarely how he Twins org looks at them.
Extremely frustrating.

For what they got for him? Incredibly bad deal.

2nd worst deal since the Capps trade.

MLB trade rumors had Ramos as an Extension Candidate.

And the Nats will do just that.

Who in their right mind thought giving up a slugging C for a 1-year wonder in the bullpen was a great idea?

Billy Smith had help with that deal. Had to have.

Update on Ramos

offensive line: (significant time on the DL this season so not a huge sample size)

games: 46 atbats: 168 Runs: 16 Hits: 49 doubles: 8 triples: 8 RBI's: 31 bb: 8 SO: 25
Avg: .292 obp: .324 SLG: .482 ops: .806 ops+: 119

But according to Gardy and the Twins PR machine, pitchers didn't like pitching to Ramos

Read this article:

In baseball, sometimes only the numbers can do the speaking. Entering Tuesday night, when Wilson Ramos catches, the Washington Nationals’ ERA this season is 3.30. When Kurt Suzuki catches, the Nats’ ERA is 3.96, two-thirds of a run higher.

Such a difference is astronomical. It’s far too great a gap to have much to do with stopping base stealers or blocking pitches in the dirt. It can only center on one mysterious, vital and almost completely unstudied area of baseball: pitch selection, also known as “calling a game.”

The perils of MLB Pitching

The Athletics announced on Twitter that they have designated right-hander Pat Neshek for assignment. In related moves, Josh Reddick was placed on the disabled list, and right-hander Evan Scribner and first baseman Daric Barton were recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

Neshek possesses some of the better-looking stats you'll see out of a DFA'ed reliever, as he's posted a 3.58 ERA with 6.7 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 37 2/3 innings for the A's this season. Stats like FIP (4.57), xFIP (4.66) and SIERA (4.18) all feel that his ERA is a bit of a mirage, however. He's also struggled greatly as of late (six earned runs in his past three innings) and comes with significant platoon splits, as left-handed batters have produced a .327/.379/.577 batting line against the former sixth-round pick.

These injuries happen so often, why would the Dodgers be ready to offer Kershaw $200 contract. It's one thing doing it for a position player, and another for pitchers

The Orioles released outfielder Lew Ford from Double-A Bowie, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com (on Twitter). Ford, 37, resurfaced in the Majors with Baltimore in 2012 after a four-year hiatus, during which he played in Japan, Mexico and the independent circuit in the U.S. He batted .236/.291/.463 in 33 games across three levels in the Orioles' minor league system this season.
