A funny story from the old days.

Back when Marge Schott was the owner of the Reds and Jim Bowden was the GM, old Marge made Jimmy boy drive from Cincinnatti to Florida for the Winter Meetings to control costs.

What a match made in heaven would her and Terry Ryan have been.

Mets agree to terms with Asdrubal Cabrera. The switch-hitting shortstop is set to come to New York on a two-year contract worth $18.5M, according to ESPN's Adam Rubin and multiple reports. Cabrera hit .265 last season with the Rays.

Not taken until the 2nd round. Tony Sipp to re-sign with the Astros. Ryan continues to do nothing.

Guerra Rule 5 to the Angels

Keeps bouncing around

https://twitter.com/mikeberardino

Check out the Twins at rule 5.

one is talking to someone else, one has arms crossed.

Guess they were serious about doing nothing.

Sipp to stay

Ryan wants lefties that can get RH and LH out

So he continues to do nothing, too.

The frugality of the organization under TR's management is utterly amazing considering the wealth of the Pohlad's.

I've said it before.....TR has a financial mentality that is similar to those people who as children, were raised in the depression in the dirty thirties. He just cannot comprehend that to make money, you have to spend money. He believes you can save money for prosperity.

I am hoping this was posted as a joke by SMF but in the past, TR and other members from the GM office would share rooms at the Winter Meetings to hold down costs........

Where is you other hand?

Between two pillows.....

Those aren't pillows.

The Cardinals announced that they’ve signed right-hander Jonathan Broxton to a two-year contract to return to the St. Louis bullpen.

The Nationals have agreed to a trade that will send infielder Yunel Escobar to the Angels, right-hander Trevor Gott is heading to the Nationals in the deal.

1:35pm: Bob Nightengale of USA Today hears it’s an eight-year, $184MM deal for Heyward (Twitter link) — an annual value of $23MM.

1:47pm: Heyward’s contract does indeed contain the option to opt out early, reports MLB Network’s Peter Gammons (Twitter link). However, he can opt out not only once, but twice, per Gammons. ESPN Chicago’s Jesse Rogers reports (also on Twitter) that the first opt-out clause comes three years into the contract, meaning Heyward can hit the open market entering his age-29 season if he chooses.

2:29pm: FOX’s Ken Rosenthal tweets that Heyward can opt out after the third year or fourth year if he meets certain plate appearance thresholds.

http://nypost.com/2015/12/11/mets-michael-cuddyer-to-retire/
The Mets will have to find a new veteran leader in the clubhouse. But they will have lots of cash to work with in such a search.

Michael Cuddyer officially will announce his retirement shortly, The Post confirmed Friday night.

Word leaked on the Mets.com transaction page earlier Friday night. The page soon was altered and the Cuddyer retirement announcement was taken down as the club offered a blanket “no comment at this time’’ about his retirement.

Cuddyer made $8.5 million in 2015 and was due to be paid $12.5 million in 2016. The big question is: What will become of that money?

Good on him for understanding it's not everything to milk out every single dollar you are scheduled to earn. He at least has the professional pride to accept that he simply cannot come close to earning the money due to him next year AND that he has already earned enough to cover his family and a few generations of Cuddyers EASILY.

And, yes.....taking him off the payroll actually DOES add flexibility for more spending.

This coming season will be the swan song for Joe Mauer. Either hit .300 or have a repeat of 2014-2015 and he should follow in Cuddyer's footsteps.

If he insists on carrying on after another shitty season he is an idiot. I'm sorry. Show some integrity and admit you've lost interest or that you simply cannot live up to the contract.

I get he's entitled to a lot of money, but there is more to life than grabbing as much money as you can get. He needs to wring every single dollar out of the Twins because the system allows him that? I would have retired by now ESPECIALLY if any of the concussion crap you hear about him as any basis in reality. If the concussions are an issue then he is a stupid person for carrying on simply because he stands to make more money. The guy has earned 150,000,000 dollars!

Call me nuts, tell my I am crazy....but if I were presented with the same circumstances Mauer now faces I would walk away. For myriad reasons.

Precisely Ralph. Mauer has a beautiful wife, two twin daughters and a boat load of money that he cannot possibly spend in his, his children, or his grandchildren's lifetime. At this point, all he stands to gain is additional income that will be paid to the IRS at the rate of 45% in federal estate tax. MN will take an additional bite of 16% of his estate on his MN assets. He is playing supposedly with the risk of a very serious concussion syndrome that could end his career during any game. He could be hit by a pitch in the head (helmet), hit by a ball as a base-runner, be subjected to a collision (with an opposing player or a catcher/2B on his own team) or dive at first base as a defensive player, or be injured via contact at any base as a base-runner. Any of these things happening could cause irreparable damage as we are being told. Yet, Joe takes on the risk that presumably is far less than playing at catcher. If given the same choice as Joe, I would choose retirement without hesitating, especially considering the results Joe has shown the past two seasons.
