ORIGINAL: SoMnFan Hadn't thought of it this way .... Greinke will make $1mil PER START. That is simply repulsive. Assuming the average price of a ticket is $40 (and that is not a high estimate), each Greinke start requires 25,000 paid fans in attendance to pay for his start. Sure the teams make money elsewhere, but when you have 25 other players on the roster, coaches, the manager, field support staff, office and administrative staff, how can any team justify this nonsense? Doesn't work that way. Are you guys saying his practice time, bullpen throwing, travel time, meetings, etc. are non-working days? He's supposed to do those things for free? You know what we are talking about here Matt. A top-end starting pitcher has "at most" 33 and maybe 34 starts in a season assuming no injuries and they start the first game of the season, do not miss a start during the entire season, and pitch right up to the end of the season with no September call-ups taking a start from them. Ultimately, they play in about 20% of all games played for the season. Very few pitchers these days win 20 games in a season. And despite what Dustin says, you are paying a starting pitcher to WIN GAMES when they start, not put your team in a position to win or be involved in a tie game when they leave the in the 7th or 8th inning. This was simply stupid money spent on a pitcher who isn't that great. Greinke is a very good pitcher, but he is not Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux type good. Shame on teams for paying pitchers the money that they do. It is absolutely ridiculous!
