Status: offline 		Walt Weiss has resigned his post as manager of the Rockies, the team has announced. Weiss’ three-year contract expired at the end of the season.
Glenallen Hill, the Rockies’ Triple-A manager, could be a candidate to replace him, MLB.com’s Tracy Ringolsby tweets.

Status: offline 		The White Sox have officially announced that bench coach Rick Renteria will replace Robin Ventura as their manager. Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times was the first to report the move. The White Sox had a meeting with Ventura last night, at which he intended to resign, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (Twitter link).

Status: offline 		Tigers GM Al Avila will meet with manager Brad Ausmus this week to discuss his future with the team, as MLB.com’s Jason Beck explains. Ausmus says the team hasn’t told him whether it plans to exercise his 2017 option, and his answers to questions from reporters Sunday exuded none-too-subtle frustration about not knowing whether he’ll keep his job.

“You might want to ask whoever’s managing next year,” Ausmus responded to a question about how Bruce Rondon will be used in 2017. When asked about the challenges of being an interim manager (like Brian Snitker, whose Braves the Tigers played this weekend), Ausmus said, “I couldn’t answer that. I’ve never been one, although I’ve been kind of an interim manager for like two years.”

Status: offline 		The Braves will interview Ron Washington and Bud Black for their managerial vacancy, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman (all Twitter links). At last check, the Braves had already interviewed four internal candidates: interim manager Brian Snitker, bench coach Terry Pendleton, first base coach Eddie Perez and third base coach Bo Porter.

Snitker could be the favorite after winning praise for his work with the team down the stretch (although Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that Black is the “leading candidate“). Braves president of baseball operations John Hart says that hiring Pendleton, Perez or Porter would be difficult given what the team has done with Snitker at the helm. Snitker, meanwhile, says he understands the team’s need to evaluate other candidates.

Status: offline 		Arizona Diamondbacks manager Chip Hales was fired Monday afternoon along with general manager Dave Stewart, whose team finished 69-93, 22 games out of first place, and missed the playoffs again.

The team announced in a release on Monday that it will discuss an appropriate role for chief baseball 0fficer Tony La Russa in the future.

Status: offline 		Anybody remember Juan Guzman? Pretty good pitcher for the Blue Jays. Pitched against the Twlns in the 1991 ALCS.

Found this interesting tidbit on how he shafted the TB Devil Rays to finish his career:


"That said, that is not even close to the worst use of $12M in baseball. That honor belongs to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2000.

Prior to that season, owner Vince Naimoli provided General Manager Chuck LaMar with money to attract free agents to the Tampa Bay area and LaMar went shopping in earnest. He first tried signing Aaron Sele, but ended up signing Juan Guzman to a two-year deal for $12M. He was coming off a season in which he made 33 starts and threw 200 innings while pitching for both Baltimore and Cincinnati. Guzman took to the mound on the fifth game of that season for the Devil Rays' home opener after the team had split a series at Minnesota to start the season. Tropicana Field was packed with 40,329 fans who'd come to see the new names on the Devil Rays and their big free agent signing on the mound. Fans that were late getting into the game due to traffic or were in lines at the concession stand never got to see Guzman pitch as he left the game with an injured shoulder on his 55th pitch of the game while trying to get out of the second inning and never again threw a major-league pitch. 

The total bill for Juan Guzman's time with the Devil Rays: $12,000,000 per appearance, $7,185,628 per inning worked, and $218,189 per pitch."

Imagine, a 6'4" SS

A guy that gets worked with by the coaching staff to improve. Rather than just say he's tall and needs to move. Which is what the Twins would have done.

And, currently, still would do.

During spring training Seager worked long hours with Dodgers infield coach Chris Woodward on what he needed to do make his 6-foot-4 frame, taller than most shortstops, play at the position sufficiently.

“Just being a longer guy, you take longer steps, so shortening up steps when you catch the ball and redirecting, those were probably my biggest ones this spring training,” Seager said. “We worked on that, we worked on throwing. I kind of create different angles being a big guy obviously so I was creating a lot of downward angle on my throws, missing down a lot in the dirt, so that was a big focal point for me this year, throwing the ball as true as possible to first base every time.

“You work on every aspect of defense, whether it was learning swing paths, learning how to get a better jump, anticipating, working on your footwork, all the little stuff that can make a really big difference.”

The end result was Seager ranking no worse than average defensively by most advanced defensive metrics.

“Coming in, I think across the board I didn’t really see much of Corey, and you see the big body,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, “but he’s been as consistent and steady, defensively, as I could have envisioned.”
