EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Vikings shook up the active roster on Tuesday, two days before they’re scheduled to kickoff against the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night.

With four safeties held out of Monday’s practice, the Vikings added two safeties in signing free agent Shaun Prater and promoting Anthony Harris from the practice squad. To make room, safety Antone Exum Jr. was placed on injured reserve after suffering a fractured rib and sprained AC joint in his shoulder in Sunday’s 38-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Exum Jr. missed just one snap in the game as the Vikings were down to the bottom of their depth chart.

Heading into a bout with the 10-2 Cardinals, the Vikings are depleted at safety with Harrison Smith (knee/hamstring), Robert Blanton (knee) and Andrew Sendejo (knee) still healing and held out of Monday’s practice.

Prater, 26, was a fifth-round draft pick in 2012 by coach Mike Zimmer’s Cincinnati Bengals, though he did not appear in a game as he spent his rookie season on injured reserve before being waived the following training camp. This will be Prater’s second stint with the Vikings, first joining in October 2013, making three starts, and lasting until he was released in September’s final cuts. He’s played both cornerback and safety.

Harris, 24, has been promoted to the active roster after spending the first 12 weeks of his rookie season on the practice squad. The Vikings signed Harris as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia.

The Vikings also waived defensive end Justin Trattou, who made the active roster out of training camp and had a promising start. Trattou picked off Matthew Stafford in the Vikings’ Week 2 win against Detroit, before suffering a foot injury that opened the door for third-round rookie Danielle Hunter to carve out a role.

Linebacker Terrance Plummer was re-signed to the practice squad, filling the spot left by Harris’ promotion.

“When you watch that movie,” said Terry Bolar, who played three seasons before becoming an agent in 1992, “you see how much the NFL resembles tobacco companies.”

Doomed

Built in excuse to lose

Thursday night is getting long before it even started for the Vikings.

They ruled out four defensive starters on Wednesday in linebacker Anthony Barr (hand/groin), safety Harrison Smith (knee/hamstring), nose tackle Linval Joseph (foot) and safety Andrew Sendejo (knee), who will all not play against the Cardinals. Linebacker Brandon Watts (rib) has also been ruled out.

The problem is that it's not just 4 defensive starters. It's arguably their 3 best defensive starters and the primary backups to 3 of the missing starters. The Vikes are probably going with the equivalent of 3 special teams caliber players at positions occupied by 3 of their best players.

I would say Floyd/Johnson are not special teams caliber.

No, but whoever is starting for Barr, Smith and Sendejo likely are.

So you're saying Sendejo is one of the top 3?

Sendejo is average. Special teams guy isn't much of a downgrade.

OK Ed, let me clarify. Of the 4 players out of the lineup, 3 of them are our best defensive players. Of the 4 players who will fill in for the 4 missing starters tonight, 3 of them will be special teams caliber. Any other nits you want to pick?

I can't remember the last time I dreaded an upcoming game as much as I'm dreading this one. I expect that we'll be creamed on the scoreboard. Hopefully we don't lose more players in the process.

1st drive = hot knife through butter until the read zone. Nice to hold them to 3 after the near fumble.

Decent drive for FG. I'm shocked that we're tied at the half.

Awesome play call. They're inthe backfield on nearly every blitz and you runa slow developing reverse.

The reverse did suck. Surprisingly, we've fought back to tie it. Where was this effort on Sunday?

They must be the dumbest team in the NFL

what a way to piss a shot at tying it away

There was NO WAY they needed to do that. Kick the effing field goal. The weren't going to get a TD

Dumb
Ass

Hang on to the ball some more Teddy.

STUPID
