Triple-A right-hander Alex Meyer, the Twins’ top-ranked pitching prospect, left his start Saturday night for Rochester after facing two batters in the second inning.

Meyer, 24, walked off with a Red Wings trainer after failing to hit 90 mph on the stadium radar gun. Meyer’s velocity also was down in his previous start on Monday, although nothing as alarming as what he showed Saturday.

At its best, Meyer’s fastball has been known to touch 100 mph while consistently staying in the 95-98 mph range. That’s what he showed in a four-pitch inning at the All-Star Futures Game at Target Field on July 13.

Under strong consideration for a big-league promotion once rosters expand Monday, Meyer missed two months at midseason in 2013 with shoulder discomfort. The towering product of Greensburg, Ind., returned to enjoy a strong showing at the Arizona Fall League.

This year he went 7-6 with a 3.52 earned run average, including the three outs he recorded Saturday. He managed to make all 27 starts this season, totaling a career-high 130 1/3 innings.

With his innings total so high, the Twins were only interested in using Meyer in long relief in the majors. Even that wasn’t a given considering he would have to be added to the 40-man roster (something that will happen in late November anyway).

His arm slot had been dropping of late with his fastball and spike curveball, observers said, but Meyer’s changeup remained a breakthrough weapon for most of the year.

Twins FO seem like they sometimes care about Rochester more than the big league club. bend over backwards to make those a-holes happy.

Do anything to get the Red Wins in the play-offs.

Jose Berrios scheduled to start at Double-A New Britain tomorrow. Announcers wondering if Twins would start him at Pawtucket tomorrow

Down goes Meyer.

Injured/dead arm/ to be determined.

Announcers also saying Meyer only hit 90 mph once, everything else in the 80s

sure am glad they used up all those innings in AAA this year instead of the bigs.

Hopefully it's just a dead arm since he's thrown a ton more innings this year than last. No word of any "injury" yet so that's ok. Shut him down and get him ready for the rotation next season.

This seriously has been the craziest year I've ever seen for any organization though for injuries. ALL of our top prospects, plus our top player; hurt or suspended (Rosario). Crazy.

If your top pitching prospect (Meyer) with a history of shoulder issues is showing reduced velocity and dropping his arm slot; WHY is he still making competitive starts??? I did not see him late 2013 when he made a few starts after coming back from shoulder issue; but my observation from earlier 2013 was that he would be sharp for the first 2 or 3 innings and then be hittable.

The reason Red Wings RHP Alex Meyer is going on the disabled list: shoulder inflammation.

Just talked to Alex Meyer about his shoulder. Didn't sound too concerned. Non-committal on likelihood he will pitch again this season.

Great years for both, and Hicks of course showed well too.

Berrios really might be ready by midseason or so next year at this rate. Awesome to see.

Nice. Sit him down. Let him rest and be ready to take his spot atop this rotation come spring.

MINNEAPOLIS -- In a sesaon full of them, the Twins appear to have caught another bad break with one of their prospects.

The team's top draft choice, shortstop Nick Gordon, has a broken finger and will miss the playoffs, according to Ken Rosenthal.

Must have broken it last night or in the previous playoff game

Did it happen on a slide? Again, I would NEVER let my guys slide headfirst. A base here or two is just not worth it in today's game. Hands are too important.

Really encouraging bounceback from Z. Jones in his return. If he and Burdi both aren't up with the Twins by the end of 2015, something went wrong. I think Jones is our future closer.

Much like Buxton wasn't the same after his wrist injury, Gordon also may never be the same after this injury. This sucks. Injuries are messing with their careers.

A thumb injury? No. Both should be fine.
