ORIGINAL: Mark Anderson Brad: Any analysis of T/G Vera Tucker from USC? Best thing since sliced bread I'm sure, if he's PAC XX. The problem with these PAC XX players and Big 12 conferences is they don't play any defense, so you don't know how those offensive players who look great collegiately will translate in the pro's. There are many examples, but Dru Samia is one that currently hurts. Samia went to Oklahoma, which is Big XX. Your point is most germane when it comes to offensive skill players who get ballyhooed playing against mostly bad defenses. Defensive players who stand out tend to be very good, though, as Brad pointed out. Aaron Rodgers (Pac 12) seems to have done pretty well for himself. Patrick Mahomes was Big 12. Rob Gronkowski (Pac 12). Keenan Allen (Pac 12). Justin Herbert (Pac 12). Zach Ertz (Pas 12). Christian McCaffrey (Pac 12). Tyler Lockett (Big 12). Some of the elite weapons in the league. Almost 1/3rd of the starting quarterbacks in the league right now played at Pac 12 or Big 12 schools. The six from the SEC; Matthew Stafford (inconsistent), Drew Lock (awful), Tua (unproven), Cam Newton (old), Brandon Allen (career backup). Ryan Tannehill (decent player). Joe Burrow should be good when he gets healthy. The two rookie wide receivers from Alabama this season are major disappointments. Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs can't catch a cold. There's plenty of good players, no doubt. But there have also been loads (more than the good?) who have dramatically underperformed their can't-miss projections. Happens in every conference, but I have learned over the years that what seem to be elite offensive skill players from the Pac 12 and the Big 12/10 need extra scrutiny/skepticism. As opposed to Laquon Treadwell (SEC), Cordarrelle Patterson (SEC), Percy Harvin (SEC), Sidney Rice (SEC) or Troy Williamson (SEC)? The SEC experience has been pretty bad for the Vikings over the past 15 years.
