Bill Johanesen -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 4:34:20 PM)

Chi @ GB, I'll go with GB.  The loser digs themselves an early division hole, not a deep one but they still have to get out the shovels and dig.

Corleone -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 5:20:26 PM)

Week 1 - Vikes 34, Cleveland 13

Anything much closer than that would be a disappointment.  Cleveland is flat out terrible.

GopherFan34 -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 6:24:16 PM)

Historically, the Vikes have not done well when favored by more than 3, I have never broken it down, but this game will be closer than 7. I predict the Vikes win by 3. 20 to 17. I'm looking forward to the Allen/Thomas match up. Joe is a local kid and I know his parents well, they told me he's been looking forward to this game since the schedule came out. I hope Allen eats his lunch.

John Childress -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 7:13:25 PM)

If this game is closer than 7 points - fire up the Who's Gonna Be the Vikings Next Coach thread!

Caesar -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 7:26:58 PM)

Hell, let's fire it up anyway!

Vikes by 3 TD's sounds about right.

marty -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 8:31:52 PM)

I do NOT like the 4 point spread.  The Vikes should be an 8 point favorite with Cleveland not even sure who to start at QB.

I'm afraid this could be a 'sway' where Cleveland gets just enough calls to keep it close.  Then, I think at the end they might actually help the Vikes to win, but with just a FG.  It is good for the Vikes to win to draw more of an audience for their later matchup with GB.

Ideal 'sway', Vikes win by 3.

Guest -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 8:38:39 PM)

Everyone has been saying things like "we should go 5-1 with a cupcake schedual to start the season"...

While that might be possible... I think too much confidence is being placed on Childress/Bevel to attack on offense, and of course cupcakes are a lot harder to swallow when your starting QB is a moldy old creampuff..[&:]

seriously, I know it's Negativity, but "he who i can't stomach" is gonna keep a lot of "bad teams" close with crappy play.

The defense is the only thing i see as a definte "deciding factor" in all of the first 8 of our games..

This defense is gonna be awesome.

John Childress -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 9:17:58 PM)

Way too much worrying about a scrub team

marty -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 9:20:03 PM)

The only way the Vikes go on the road and blowout a team is if Favre is connecting on passes of 30 yards or more, OR Harvin and Peterson are both giving DC fits.

jim -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/10/2009 11:38:48 PM)

Vikings 31 Browns 13

Defense: 4 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 2 picks, 1 TD

AD: 151 yards rushing, 2 TDs

Favre: 15-24, 189 yards, 1 TD

Do you ever actually go back and read what you write?

You think the Vikings should be an 8 point favorite on the road, but you have them winning by 3?  I'll take the 8, if you want to make it interesting.

marty -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/11/2009 4:17:03 AM)

I know EXACTLY what I wrote Pete.

The point I'm making is I wish the Vikes would be favored by 8 as then the betting would probably be moreso on Cleveland, which would mean the VIKES would probably get the calls in a [possible 'sway', and I would LIKE their chances of winning by more than 8.

What I SHOULD have said is I WISH the Vikes were favored by 8, but they REALLY should be favored by 6.  Six would have been about right, the betting probably almost even on both sides.  Then the officials probably leave it alone, call a good game, and what happens, happens.

But with Cleveland favored by 4, (the Vikes a division winner who might have IMPROVED adding Favre and Havrin - and Loadholt - while Cleveland is not sure who to start at QB, lost their explosive TE, and almost dumped their #1 RB), it seems TOO easy to bet on Minnesota.  Therefore, IF the refs do a little tinkering, I think they are likely to favor CLEVELAND on ticky tack calls (PI, holding on OL, holding on DBs, anything close), to either give Cleveland a good start, or make the game close so it is HARD for Minnesota to cover the 4.

I say, if you're betting Minnesota -4, it might NOT be easy money, you might be sweating it out 'til the end.  You MIGHT win, but I doubt you'll be feeling comfortable until late in the 4th quarter.  I hope I'm WRONG on this.

Go FARVE to HAVRIN !!!

ebergste -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/11/2009 7:44:44 AM)

Just curious, do you guys actually buy the "get the calls to make it interesting next week or fix the Vegas line stuff?.  I'm just wondering cause if I thought that was actually happening I don't think I would be an NFL fan.  I do buy the certain players get certain calls but that happens in every league and is part of the superstar persona.  I just can't get on board with the idea of this grand conspiracy to fix games.  3 people can't keep a secret unless two of them die, how in the heck could thousands of people though many decades somehow keep this under their hats.

I agree, Dan. The offense still concerns me as well. The defense is as good as any in the league and top 3, IMO.

For all of the hoopla surrounding our revamped passing game, I'll believe it when I see it. We have Favre who is old and likes to throw it up instead of even taking the sack, Berrian still recovering, Harvin unknown and question marks w/ promising, but unproven WR's like Johnson, Reynaud, and even Rice. The passing could range from great to horrible and anywhere in between.

[&:]Berman of Swamy Stick(usually a slightly above .500 proposition) Predicted that Cleveland would win 19-17. This actually makes me feel even more like the Vikings will blow them out. Only Childress can beat us, by playing to close to the vest. Get a 2 touchdown lead to start the game and then run run run. The defense can then be in nickle for half the game and tee off on Brady.

All his other picks were obvious no brainers to me, Chargers crushing Oakland..etc.

His Super Bowl teams are the Eagles and San Diego. I feel he is half right on this[;)]

This was a week of no brainers. Glad I hit one of the brainers last night.

In the picks pool I had a 1 on Pittsburgh, because I really felt the game was a toss up. I was actually rooting for Tennessee, because the net result in the pool would have been better for me as some had 16 on Pittsburgh.

Berman has always liked the Browns so I would expect him to predict a Cleveland win. I think the game will be tougher than most of you because it's a season opener on the road. I expect the Vikes to win by 7-10 points.

Berman, along with a host of others right now seem to be caught up in this wave of anti-Favre sentiment...at first a lot of folks were saying how suddenly the Vikes are SB contenders (as if they weren't before) and now the luster of the Favre arrival has worn off and suddenly everyone is on the GB kick...Are you guys seeing this?  I mean some folks are actually picking the Vikes for 3rd in the North...do they really believe that or are they just being contrarian?

I feel like Berman's pick is perfectly representative of these folks that are now saying BF isn't going to help, not of same page, making excuses for blaming lack of production of pre-existing injuries, etc (which are legitmate arguments)...but many of those guys were saying the opposite just 2 weeks ago.

The weird thing for me, is that this sudden Favre negativity in the media is getting me behind him...

I'm pretty psyched to see how this plays out...and I'm betting we are going to like the results!

Caesar -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/11/2009 10:36:04 PM)

Chris, while I wouldn't say all the negativity is making me get behind Favre, it has irked me.  Especially CNN/SI where NO ONE picked the Vikes to win the North.

We are a better team than the Bears or Packers.  Better coaching?  I don't know, but we have better talent.  And it is extremely disrespectful that NO ONE picked the Vikes to win the North.

I'm not all fired up about Favre, but I am all fired up about the season.  I want us to make other teams beg us for mercy.  I want us to be up 52-3 in the fourth and still have our starters in, like the Patriots did two years ago.

Pillage and Plunder!  Leave no survivors!!

Steve Lentz -> RE: Who will win the NFC North (9/11/2009 10:41:27 PM)

I heard one reporter say we have the 3rd best QB in the division and unfortunately it's a QB league.
I'm not sure where I would rate BC among division coaches either, but we have the top defense and rushing attack easily.
