I think Everson Griffen had a great season, but I've mentioned his dropoff in the back end a few times. One way to look at it

Weeks 1-12: 5th in pressures per game
Weeks 13-17: 60th in pressures per game

(Arif on Twitter)

He didn't play week 17 right?
So 75% of his season he was incredible at getting pressure and 25% he was average. IIRC he was also quite good in the playoff game against the Saints.
My best guess is he is still pretty good and we will miss him.

I'm repeating myself, but I'm inclined to part with aging players sooner than later, especially if they want big bucks. It's a young man's game.

I do believe Griffen would benefit from being a situational player rather than a starter.

You Bruce are an ageist. In sports that's not always a bad thing to be. However, I have made a living in fantasy sports by drafting older players that slide way too far in drafts because people tend to think they are too old at least a year or two before they are too old.

Griffen got a one year contract....nothing close to the multi-year contract he wanted. He isn't a star any more but a complementary player. I would have rather kept Weatherly then Griffen. In addition we have to get younger and Joseph & Griffen were making good money.

Griffen was scheduled to make 13.9 million but it wasn't guaranteed....pretty simple reason why he left---he was a little upset he didn't get that money and he thought he could get it elsewhere. 32 now and turning 33 in December.

Mostly agree with you. Griffen was not worth the 13.9 contract and the Vikings would have cut him. He decided to opt out before that happened. However, I think Griffen is still quite good and easily better than Weatherly. I think he will turn out to be a bargain for the Cowpukes and help them make the playoffs this year.

Did we offer Grif an opportunity to renegotiate before he hit FA?

Mike Zimmer on Armon Watts: "He's got quickness like a three-technique and he's got some size like a nose tackle. He's got a little more of the twitchy things we look for in a three-technique."

Dalvin Cook says he never considered not coming to training camp. "The Vikings and my agent are working extremely hard. I'm just continuing to work my tail off and get ready. I love being in Minnesota."

Cook says he'll be fully participating in practice going forward even if he doesn't have a new deal.

Cook says he put on some more muscle this offseason to help him take contact and stay healthy.

We still need to find that 2nd consistent pass rusher. Whether it is another DE or DT or LB.

Candidates are Oden, Hercules, Barr, Lynch. Maybe Watts turns into a monster.

I'm interested to see what D.J. Wonnum can do, and maybe even Dye or Wilson, depending on how we use our LBs.

Hunter has played 496 snaps this season, meaning he gets a sack every 58.4 defensive plays. But reserve defensive lineman Ifeadi Odenigbo has three sacks in 138 snaps, meaning he gets one every 46 plays on the field.

it was taking off week 17 that gave griffen the spark in new orleans...when he and cook are healthy and rested they're as good as anyone...but that aspect prevents them from being full-time, full-season players....

i think that griff was pissed at the vikes, and there was no way he was giving us a hometown discount - even though we've paid him $56m over his career...if his wife and kids are not living in dallas with him he could struggle a bit psychologically....

new deal: $3m roster bonus and $3m salary....

First open Vikings practice is in the books. A couple observations:
-Dalvin Cook was here, like he said he would be, and practiced
-Aviante Collins and Dakota Dozier rotated at LG with the 1s; Pat Elflein was at RG the whole practice
-Ezra Cleveland worked w/the 2s at LG

Non practice news: Minnesota has claimed former Dolphins safety Steven Parker, per the waiver wire. Miami waived him yesterday, Vikings address deep safety depth today.

(Courtney Cronin on Twitter)

At Oklahoma, Steven Parker even played a little nickel cornerback. Last year, Parker started four games for Miami and grabbed two interceptions.

Bisi Johnson made a couple nice leaping grabs today. He lined up primarily as the WR2 opposite of Thielen.

Chad Beebe got work as the WR3. Justin Jefferson was primarily with the 2s.

-No Shamar Stephen at practice. Armon Watts got work in at nose, Jaleel Johnson at 3T. Saw Hercules Mata’afa mix in at 3T as well.
-Jeff Gladney here but not practicing. Had sleeve on right leg. He had meniscus surgery post combine so it could be related to that.

Jalyn Holmes getting work in as a second team defensive end, instead of DT. Switched numbers from 92 to 91. Played DE at Ohio State.

Alexander Hollins, who seemingly has added a little bit of weight (college weight of 170 pounds), with a few really impressive catches today.

Normal caveats: no pads, first day of media access to camp, not against first team defense, etc.

Dantzler is Tall. Last time I checked he was ridiculously skinny. They say trying to bulk up for the combine is what tanked him combine 40.
