Question for Bruce or Bohum

The plasma(antibodies) that is being donated. Can it be used as preventative(poor man's vaccine) or is it just effective on someone who already has Covid19?

I believe it's used exclusively for already infected patients. I read they're starting a study with newly infected patients who have risk factors for getting seriously ill, and I know they've given it to severely ill patients.

It's unfortunate, but, if it takes looting and rioting to make changes that may have otherwise never come to fruition, count me in. I don't think anyone took joy in watching the events. It was upsetting. It was at times chaotic.

The riots and looting are the actions that will HARM progress, not the actions that will help create it.

Let's think about this with a clear mind for a second: do you think the people that need to change their mindset and becoming more open to racial equality will become more or less likely to do so after they see a group of people riot, loot and burn sections of their city down?

Absolutely correct.

Thanks, I find it a little disturbing that no one left-of-center will come in and respond to Brad's comments that can only be described as tacitly approving of rioting and looting. The bolded comment above is horrible in my opinion. Shockingly bad.

And even if one makes the argument that the ends justify the means, I have seen no evidence that there would any gain in the rioters ends.

In fact, it seems to be the opposite:

"What’s often hard for people to see is that there are these white moderates who are part of the Democratic coalition as long as they perceive there to be order, but when they perceive there to be too much disorder they shift to the party that has owned the issue of order, which is the Republican Party. For some people, the idea that there are these swing Democratic-minded voters is hard to grasp, but there is pretty strong evidence that in 2016, and in 1968, that was an important and influential niche of voters." - Omar Wasow, a professor of politics at Princeton.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/how-violent-protests-change-politics

In case anyone did not know, the New Yorker is a pretty left-of-center publication, so this is not Fox News saying rioting hurts Democrats.

And to the one reader that gave my above post in response to Brad one star: Dear anonymous one-star voter, can you explain to me, via PM if you prefer, where my post was in error so that I may better understand how you think rioting or looting will help the cause of racial equality? Thanks

I posted my misgivings about burning and looting earlier.

Here's a list of riots in the USA on wikipedia. I clicked on about a dozen of them. I haven't read enough to decide if anything positive came out of any of them. For sure I'd say nothing positive came out of the numerous riots in 1919 aka Red Summer.

Their shouldn't be any discussion whatsoever about whether riots, burning, looting or murdering of innocent people has positive effects. This is really sick. Then I read Brad supporting it because the ends is worth the means. Than I against my better judgment read one of his posts taking credit for the name changes of sports teams and mascots to the riots, burnings, lootings and murders after the George Floyd incident. I've been promoting changing the Washington team name for the last 50 years. It wasn't George Floyd riots that got it changed. Brad is so beyond sick. As for the other sports team names we don't even know if that's for better or worse. His exact words count me in. Brad you want attention you got it. I'm holding you responsible for aiding and abetting them.

Some really messed up shit.

What happened to this thread. It was to talk about COVID-19 and Those infected with it. If we were evolving that might be OK, but it seems like we are devolving. Can you all move it to the politics thread. I know I participated a little so I'm sorry.

Probably right. I'm partially responsible. I'll take it somewhere else.

The right way to protest.

From Footloose

Why does all the negative stuff get responded to and I show one very positive thing and it doesn't get one response. Unless Brad responded because in that case I wouldn't know.
This truly is a great example of how to protest.

Sorry if I offended anyone with the conversation. That was not my intent. I'll step away from the conversation at this point. I deleted my posts that were not COVID-related.

Even if you are disappointed with the current fruits of the two party system, political nihilism is not the answer. Engage, assess, analyze, and vote.

I agree with this, although in doing so many will choose the lesser of two evils as I said in my other reply to you.

I personally know 6 or 7 people that will likely vote for Trump and only one actually really likes him.

And yet every one of them will likely disclaim being racist I'm sure. As I'm sure that all Republicans are not racist. But to be Republican they will have to vote for & and accept a President who's racist.

Boston Tea Party?

I am not a huge fan of the Boston Tea Party, but I think the Boston Tea Party was somewhat analogous to burning down the Third Precinct. There was a perceived wrong and a specific symbolic thing was attacked because of it. Now, I am not saying I was a fan of burning down a taxpayer-funded police building, but that was an action that made some level of sense.

OTOH, breaking into a high-end store and stealing Gucci is not at all like the Boston Tea Party. Neither is burning minority-owned businesses to the ground.

In Minneapolis, affordable housing units that were under construction were burnt to the ground. Kind of hard to see how this was ever an action that was going to bring about positive change.

This is my huge problem with Trump. The terrible way he talks about almost everything.

The President should be able to rally all of America in times of strife, like, say, a global pandemic, and this cannot be done when you are divisive and not fundamentally a good person.

Biden is not as bad as Trump on this - who is - but he has a long history of saying highly questionable and racist things as well. The Democrats chose a clueless old white guy to run against a clueless old white guy. Biden telling a black podcaster that blacks "ain't black" if they do not vote for him is one of the more ridiculous things I have heard in 2020, the most ridiculous of years.

This thread is serving it's purpose which was to keep all this stuff out of the football threads. This is currently my favorite thread and the one I'm learning the most in.

It's turning into a politics thread is the problem. It was not intended for that.

Only person I recall bashing is Brad for saying count me in on riots, burnings, lootings and murder. Other than that no bashing of any of us. Bashing the politicians sure. Some mild disagreements sure. However, the more this becomes nothing, but a politics thread the worse it will get and you will be happy Bill because I will no longer be participating in it.

He didn't use those words, but he said count me in. The ends was worth the means. He was absolutely endorsing whatever it took no matter how misguided he was in thinking that those things led to positive change. You are defending the indefensible.

No, you took a very specific statement from Brad and extrapolated it into something larger to meet your narrative. You owe Brad an apology.

That's a fairly large oversimplification of what I said, but Brad has officially moved on to the political thread, where this conversation belongs.
