The Vikings have traded for Jets TE Chris Herndon.

Irv Smith is another in a long line of Spielman high draft pick busts.

How is Irv Smith a "bust" exactly? He's been the 2nd TE behind Rudolph and has shown to be a solid blocker and a skilled receiver with speed. All reports out of camp were that he was poised to have a breakout year this year. When he returns from his injury, assuming al goes well, he'll still have the potential to have a great season. Spileman has whiffed on a lot of players, but Smith is not one of them.

Dozier might have saved himself with his last couple of games being pretty good.

Or not..

#Vikings are releasing Jake Browning and Dakota Dozier, sources say. They’re hoping to get both back to the practice squad.

Is Dozier eligible for the practice squad?

The NFL will carry over a series of 2020 roster rules designed to maintain adequate numbers if players are sidelined by positive COVID-19 tests.

The decision had been long anticipated but was confirmed during a media briefing Friday by Dawn Aponte, the NFL's chief football administrative officer.

The rules include:

Expansion of practice squads to 16 players, including up to six who have more than two accrued seasons.

The ability to protect up to four practice squad players per week from being signed by other teams.

Elevation of up to two practice squad players to the active roster, without removing any current players, before 4 p.m. ET the day before a game.

Elevation of an additional practice squad player within 90 minutes before kickoff in the event of a late COVID-19 positive test result.

Players placed on injured reserve can return after three weeks, rather than six as in normal seasons.

Removal of the limit for how many players can be activated from injured reserve.

DAMN! I was hoping the NFL might protect us from ourselves.

66 career receptions over his first two seasons, as a pass-catching TE.

He's also developing a concerning injury history.

If he has a similar or worse 2021, he is well on his way to being a bust, considering where he was taken in the draft.

Herndon has almost identical offensive numbers to Irv Smith over a similar number of career games.

Herndon is considered a better blocker than Smith, and Herndon was only a 4th round pick.

Conklin must not be much better than Smith (health wise) right now.

The good news is we're gonna have 2 capable TEs if/when Irv Smith comes back.

The good news is they can probably be used together or separately, depending on the situation. That is, if Smith plays at all in 2021.

The bad news is we had to give up a draft pick to add Herndon because of Irv Smith's continuing injury issues.

Sounded like Zimmer thought it was the short term; trading for Herndon suggests otherwise.

Herndon has trouble staying healthy too...

True. He lost an entire season. But he was pretty healthy last season.

Dozier will be a backup somewhere. Browning lost his shot in my eyes; poor preseason.

This is why I didn't want Kyle Long....spend money on an oft injured player.

The #Chiefs moved G Kyle Long to reserve/PUP (meaning he's out at least six games), waived RB Darwin Thompson and released WR Gehrig Dieter.

Source says Kene Nwangwu is likely to go on injured reserve with a designation to return after hyperextending his knee during the #Vikings’ first preseason game. He’ll likely end up on the 53-man roster today, and would need to be placed on IR tomorrow to return this year.

Worth noting that PFF charged Chisena with as many missed tackles on special teams last year (6) as the rest of the Vikings' roster combined. Still, you can't teach speed, and the Vikings must feel like Chisena has improved both as a gunner and a receiver in his second season.

Some released players we should have interest in

-Nick Folk K 26 of 28 on field goals and 30 of 33 on extra points. He had two game-winning field goals last season.

-McCole Pruitt TE

-Ben Braden G

I remember when practice squads were just eight players so seeing it expanded to 16 (a good thing imo!) makes it seem like every transaction today ends with "but they want him for the practice squad"

I know this is the wrong thread but 2018 Alabama roster:
3 starting QBs 2 1sts and a 2nd rounder (Tua, Hurts, Mac)
3 starting RBs two 1st rounders (Jacobs, Najee, Harris)
4 1st round WRs (Jeudy, Ruggs, Waddle, Smith)
4 other 1st rounders (Willis, Leatherwood, Surtain, Q Williams)

Not even close.

Smith was under utilized behind a long established player who was key to the regime's offensive plans (see Rudolph's over-inflated contracts for reference).

He might or might not not meet the high expectations that many have for him ... it remains to be seen how good / bad / merely solid type of a starter he is. That will have to wait until he comes back from injury which is nobody's fault.
