Irv Smith is another in a long line of Spielman high draft pick busts.

Not even close.

Smith was under utilized behind a long established player who was key to the regime's offensive plans (see Rudolph's over-inflated contracts for reference).

He might or might not not meet the high expectations that many have for him ... it remains to be seen how good / bad / merely solid type of a starter he is. That will have to wait until he comes back from injury which is nobody's fault.

Never know what Matt is doing in the Vikes Thread...

Packers with Oline issues also:

Tough blow for an offensive line that's lost Corey Linsley and Bryan Bulaga in consecutive offseasons.
Elite guard Elgton Jenkins will try to play left tackle.

The #Packers are keeping All-Pro LT David Bakhtiari (knee) on the PUP list into the season, source said, meaning he’ll miss the first six weeks. Tough blow for Green Bay, but this will allow perhaps the game’s best LT the chance to fully heal.

Any word on what we gave up for Herndon? Either Conklin also isn't ready or Smith is done for the year if this cost any more than a 5th round pick.

The good news is we're gonna have 2 capable TEs if/when Irv Smith comes back.

The good news is they can probably be used together or separately, depending on the situation. That is, if Smith plays at all in 2021.

The bad news is we had to give up a draft pick to add Herndon because of Irv Smith's continuing injury issues.

Sounded like Zimmer thought it was the short term; trading for Herndon suggests otherwise.

Herndon has trouble staying healthy too...

I'm guessing that if the Vikings thought it was long term they'd more likely target someone like Zach Ertz. Herdon is capable fill in who can cover for a few weeks until Smith returns. At least I hope that was their thinking....

Trade details: The #Vikings are trading a 2022 fourth-round pick to the #Jets for TE Chris Herndon and a 2022 sixth-round pick, per source. It wasn't on the transaction wire today, but the deal is done.

How is Irv Smith a "bust" exactly? He's been the 2nd TE behind Rudolph and has shown to be a solid blocker and a skilled receiver with speed. All reports out of camp were that he was poised to have a breakout year this year. When he returns from his injury, assuming al goes well, he'll still have the potential to have a great season. Spileman has whiffed on a lot of players, but Smith is not one of them.

66 career receptions over his first two seasons, as a pass-catching TE.

He's also developing a concerning injury history.

If he has a similar or worse 2021, he is well on his way to being a bust, considering where he was taken in the draft.

LOL! I wonder why Smith only had 66 receptions over his first two seasons....oh yeah, he was a pass catching tight end who was behind Kyle Rudolph in that role. This year Smith was positioned to take over for Rudolph and be the #1 receiving TE. Hopefully that still happens.

That's tall cotton for Herndon. Even looking at him long term and not just a fill-in for Irv.

Wow a 4th and 6th for Herndon? We won't pony up a 6 for Minshew but a 4 and 6 for a pedestrian TE? I'm glad we got a TE but that's an overpay IMO, SMH.

No a 4th and we get Herndon and a 6th.

Ertz might have only cost a 4th. I'm confused with this one.

Just heard we get the 6th rounder not the Jets.

So we get Herndon and Jet's 2022 6th

The Jet's get our 2022 4th

I don't get this one. All indications were he was good at the job. Maybe we are going to add him back after we do a post cut down IR maneuver.

Not sure what Spielman sees in Herndon. The guy looked good his rookie season but has done nothing since. Weird.

Is Ertz actually any good now? He was a superstar a few years ago, but maybe he's completely lost it.

I went to the NY Post. They called Herndon disappointing. The fan comments were good riddance and they fleeced the Queens.

We definitely gave up too much for Herndon and he has been disappointing. Half his disappointment came in the form of a four-game-suspension followed by a season-ending injury. I like that we added him but it should have been a swap of 6th and 7th rounders or just a 7th rounder. This is a classic Rick-Spielman-panic-move. Do I use too many hyphenated-phrases?

I wouldn't give ANY qb $30-50+ mil unless that QB had won me a Super Bowl. Did you win a Super Bowl on your rookie deal? Yes? Great! Here's your hugenormous contract. F it let's just run victory laps and love life. No? Good luck. Next!

2020 Chris Herndon (his disappointment year) 31 catches for 287 yards and 3 TDs

2020 Kyle Rudolph 28 catches for 334 yards and 1 TD

Herndon will fill in just fine.

Lots of drops and lots of fumbles is what I read made the year disappointing.

From what I've been reading ...

he's been a disappointment but like Smith, hasn't been used the right way and on a team without our offensive weapons.

We'll just have to wait to see how he adapts (or doesn't).
