Super Bowl XXIII. Trailing 16-13. 3:20 left in the game. The 49ers on their own eight-yard line.

The epitome of having "IT"!

There are plenty of reasons why Cousins isn't a good qb.

-Doesn't take care of the football
-Holds the ball too long
-Poor pocket presence
-Abysmal in the last 2min of the first half and end of games (2min drill)
-Primetime record 7-16
-A putrid 4-24 against teams with a winning record

Whenever anyone describes Cousin there is always the caveat "For Kirk to be effective everything needs to be on schedule around him"

This is the year where he has no excuses.

OLine should be improved
Defense has been revamped
Plenty of weapons
Are you "pro Dozier" as well?
I expect 4200 yards, 35 TDs, Under 14 INTs

He also needs to start out much, much better than he has the last two years. We can't afford to lose winnable games because his head isn't on straight the first part of the season.

He also needs to take better care of the football. Fumbles and Int's need to be much lower.

Wait, are you suggesting pro-Cousins types simply can't just wave off those 4-6 games as being "cold"?

I'm Pro Viking

Cousins is Vikings QB1.

So I guess I am Pro Cousins.

Pro Dozier?

That's too many INTs. INTs have been dropping in the NFL for some time now. Last year the most INTs thrown was 15. 8 or less is what I would be looking for.

There were 7 teams that had more than 15 INTS. Of the 10 teams that threw more INTs than the Vikings/Cousins, none of them had more than 25 TD passes. Hey the Giants only threw 11 INTs, we should be more like them.

Who gives a F about Prime time. Just a game no different than any other.

Another example of amazing illogical shortsightedness in the effort to make excuses for Cousins.

Prime time games, especially ones later in the season, often match opponents battling for the division title, teams projected to be in the playoffs, or teams with playoff implications. There are the games catering to larger markets or games with gimmicky storylines, but in general if you are a very good team you'll be in 4-5 prime time games. More than half of those games will be against a key team in the division or conference. And players admit they do know much of the league is watching.

To say who gives a F is frankly pretty stupid.

Does a good job taking care of the football.
Has the courage to hold the ball long enough to make the play.
Good pocket presence
Just fine in 2 minute drill.

Highly concerned. If he doesn’t play this year it will be devastating. He’s our most talented defender.

I ripped Dozier and Cousins last year. I wanted them to do well but one was awful and one was streaky and inconsistent.

One can be very good to great in the right circumstances and one just doesn't have the talent to be good to great.

Great point.

Everyone falls on a spectrum somewhere in the middle between

haters seething with rancor for Cousins ... to floosies who want to sleep with his arm ... the extremes don't actually exist.

Pointing out the cons doesn't automatically make you anti-, less 'tidy' maybe (as Cousins would say).

Maybe a little less 'chipper'. Oh well.

Minnesota Vikings

Kirk Cousins since 2018 among starting QBs:

- 93.8 grade in a clean pocket (7th)
- 91.1 grade w/ play action (5th)
- 92.3 grade on throws 0-19 yards downfield (4th)
- 90.0 grade when not blitzed (5th)
- 15 TDs on throws 30+ yards downfield (3rd)

There's no doubt about it ... when you keep him clean, he's very good.

If he had an ounce less of Opie 'gee, golly'-ness and an ounce more of 'I am going to make you pay for that you insolent defensive bastards' ... he'd be top ten overall. easy.

He is top 10 Easy.

Regarding our QB situation.

Cousins isn't the team's problem. He's pretty accurate. Throws way more TDs than INTs (and most of his INTs are due to extreme pressure because of abysmsal Oline in front of him, or deflections off of receivers hands). Add on top of that that he's durable, he's only missed one game since joining the Vikings.

My fear at this point, even though he's no Brees, or Rodgers etc....is if he goes against type and gets hurt and can't play...we are basically ****ed. We have no QB on the roster other than Cousins that has taken a snap in the NFL. I am NOT saying I want Manion back. Just that our Depth at QB right now is at best, tenuous.

Yea, there are a couple of teams in the NFL that have the kind of QB depth that allows them some comfort if their starter goes down, but most teams would be in trouble. This is one reason why you need that solid run game. Most of the coaches know that if you have that run game to fall back on, that second team QB can play with less pressure. This year we will have a young and untested group backing up at QB, I hope we don't have to test it, but I'd rather have these young guys, than Manion.

Agreed.

Another example of no quality depth. Granted, we can't expect anything close to Hunter's production, but who starts in his place? Wonnum, Weatherly, or Willikes? Oh, one of them will likely be the other DE.

The board's answer to depth is "Bring back Everson Griffin".

I remember when we drafted Hunter. It was almost unanimous on this board that it was a head scratcher pick. nobody had really heard of this guy and many bitched that we could have had him in the fifth or sixth round. Hunter was a raw, stud athlete, but after a couple years with AP coaching him up, we started to see what we all see now, a pro bowl, future HOF guy. The Vikings and Hunter will get this worked out in the next couple weeks, but Hunter also needs to know that he probably wouldn't be where he's at if not for Andre Patterson. Yes, he had the ability to get to this level, but he didn't do it on his own.

It goes without saying (even though I'm saying it), this defense needs Hunter, give him a few more Million a year and be done with it!

cbssports.com had this for Hunter before the draft

Danielle Hunter is the #50 overall prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft according to CBSSports.com and is their #6 rated defensive end.

NFL Player Comparison

NFL.com: Jason Pierre-Paul, New York Giants
CBSSports.com: Barkevious Mingo, Cleveland Browns
Fit For The Vikings

Minnesota will be looking for a rotational defensive end to eventually compete with Brian Robison for the starting job opposite Everson Griffen.

My Take

While I don’t expect defensive end to be a top priority in the draft, I could see the Vikings using a 3rd rounder or later on a pass rusher to help out Robison and Griffen. If Danielle Hunter begins to slide deep into the second round on draft day, look for Rick Spielman to consider going to get him

So CBS sports had him as a mid second round talent. I admit to not liking the pick at the time.
