ORIGINAL: Tom Sykes I’ll say this, zed is a big risk, dh + zed is a huge risk … if it backfires, at least we were gambling to be good. thank you. I also like the GM’s focus on D in spite of the HC’s role. What do you think of the depth there? Willikes, Jones, Robinson, and Wonnum. I think James Lynch might thrive in the 3-4. He may be the third starter on the DL. None of those guys have a 3-4 role although Lynch maybe looks the part. Here is the 2006 Patriots roster with a 3-4: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/nwe/2006_roster.htm The roster contains the likes of Vince Wilfork, Richard Seymour, and Ty Warren on the DL. Junior Seau and Teddy Bruschi as ILBs with size and power. Phillips and our ILBs will get trucked. Robinson and Wonnum are definitely OLB in the 3-4. Willikes and Jones might be asked to lose or gain weight to find a role. I hope Willikes finds a role. The guy hustles and is relentless. Right now I would say our starters would be Philips and Watts at DE, Tomlinson at NT, OLBs Hunter and Smith, ILB Hicks and Kendricks Normally you would only have 1 of those guys (34 OLB) on the field at a time. Doesn't smell right. So you'd have 3 ILBs in a 3-4? You don't normally have 2 "hand in the dirt" type DEs on the field at a time as OLBs in a 3-4. That's like fielding a "hand in the dirt" type DE as one of ypur 3 LBers in a 4-3. Both guys are ferocious pass rushers, but both are also very good against the run. They're kind of exactly what you want at OLB. It's a lot easier to shift your blocking if you know which guy is coming on every snap. In passing situations (which most plays are nowadays), you are going to have 5 non pass defenders on the field? OLB/DE/NT/DE/OLB? Normally on pass plays you drop an OLB in favor of an additional DB. I'm wondering if the plan is to have one of these guys (probably Hunter) line up as one of our DEs. in nickel a 3-4 goes to 4 d-linemen, 2 lb's and 5 db's.... Same as 4-3, IMO I don't see Zed and Hunter not both being on the field in passing situations as part of our pass rushing front 4, as opposed to one or both being on the field as pass defenders, or not being on the field at all.
