I guess Smith re-structured and saved us 6M.

Cap numbers:

Hicks 3.5M
Philips 3.8M

now smith has a 2023 cap hit of $19.2mm, with a dead cap of $11.7mm - i love the guy, but it seems like a step backward....

Perfect example of why I've been harping on how restructured contracts aren't some magic bullet that create cap room out of nothing.

It just feels like we're maxing out our credit cards...

I think they bank on the credit limit going up(salary cap) and some contracts being done.

We are at a point where we had to choose one way or the other. We are choosing to go for it with this roster thinking that the more modern philosophy of this coaching staff can make us a contender.

A total 180 from where I thought KAM would go.

You keep mentioning the cap (likely) going up in the future (true) without factoring in the free agents and re-ups are going to cost more to sign... that's the whole point of the cap increase!

Plus every other team gets the same increase. With a 15M increase in the cap, we could go from say 5 to 20 million. Meanwhile another team goes from 30 to 50 million. They still maintain their competitive advantage.

It feels like there is a lot of timidness. Almost fear-based moves.

Can't afford to lose Cousins or Smith. Schlottman and Mundt feel like guys to bring in to help the existing guys learn the new systems (because apparently every coach having 3 assistants isn't enough...)

That is one downside of two first-timers in the top positions of a regime. Do they want to go 3-14 the first two years in their new jobs?

Granted, given the state of the team perhaps they think there is no middle ground between a teardown and continued mediocrity. Every move they've made suggests mediocrity for a while with no way out barring a complete rebuild.

Guess Conklin was too expensive or deemed expendable with Irv 'Big Tease' Smith returning.

I guess we are going to keep picking at peripheral guys and work the bottom of the roster until ... Hunter is dealt? 2023?

Keep picking at peripheral guys and work the bottom of the roster and get draft picks.
I have a feeling there isn't going to be a whole lot added via FA this year.

A whole lotta what, is the question. Flotsam -or- Jetsam?

Our analytics model is represented by a vertical line pointing downwards.

I love all the 'we need Mannion for Kirk's sake' talk.

Make him an assistant QB coach then.

Yeah, add him to other assistant QB coaches then.

I'm pretty sure we were prepared to lose Conklin no matter what. It was not a strong FA class for TEs, so he was bound to get a significant raise from someone.

And he did:

Free agent tight end Tyler Conklin reached an agreement in principle with [The Jets] on Wednesday, according to a source. The deal is for three-years and $21 million per ESPN.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ biggest gut shot this offseason was losing tight end C.J. Uzomah to the New York Jets early in the legal tampering period. That leaves a pretty big hole at receiving from the tight end position.

It’s clear that the Bengals need someone there to pair with tight end Drew Sample that is an outstanding blocker, but he leaves plenty to be desired as a pass catcher.

It appears Cincinnati attempted to fill that void with former Minnesota Vikings tight end Tyler Conklin. However, the Jets managed to sign him as well, despite the Bengals interest.

It is a bit of a surprising move for the Jets to give Uzomah a three-year $24 million dollar deal and then follow it up with a three-year deal for Conklin worth $21 million. That is quite a bit for the position in an NFL where it is rare to have two tight ends on the field at the same time.

In addition, a promising "vertical threat" in 2021. Where he corralled 1 catch for 9 yards over six games before tearing his ACL in Oct.

Which is one catch more in 2021 than Irv Smith Jr.

Browns Out Of Contention For Deshaun Watson

Browns’ Baker Mayfield Requests Trade

No I really don't like the idea of acquiring Mayfield much. but it would open up our cap quite a bit this year if we could talk KIRK in to waiving his no trade clause to reunite with Kevin Stefanski....

We can't trade Kirk. We gave the selfish one a no trade clause...why would he waive it?

Hopefully because he has a bit more (and more recent) history with Kevin Stefanski than he does with Kevin O'Connell...

Our path to competitivess is not by upgrading roster talent, its by continuing to sign back-ups while the other teams in our division lose major starters like davante adams.

Are we far apart with Hunter bc he's asking too much or are we offering too little?

Where would Hunter have to be for the avg person to say he was being unreasonable?

Someone's going to get incredible production for the next 5 years...let it be us.

I say forget the injuries. Pay him. Don't need to set records or even the market just get it done.
