If Kwesi identified a better pass blocking TE last year we wouldn't have had to have our big splash be one this year. With so many needs on D and so little $...this is not a check in the win column.

If I’m the jets I put an offer in for Lamar Jackson and tell Rodgers not to call me back until after Baltimore decides to match or not.

Good old last year... when we were flush with cap surplus? When we had Mundt for $1.2 million because we couldn't afford more? What better 'pass' blocking TEs were out there, and what were their agents asking?

Per the bolded, what is Oliver's cap hit this year? Do you know what the defensive UFAs are asking? Should we jump right in and sign a few while their asking price is at its peak?

Sure we need D but it looks like he can help with the anemic ground game, the low two-TE percentage, and reduce having to go with 3 WRs when we don't in fact have 3 good WRs. That's a double-check in the win column.

The mess this team is in is not going to be easy to fix..

I favor a “ down to the studs”, tears down, with studs being JJ, O’Niel, Darrisaw, Hock, Mattison/chandler over cook, a few others.

We are stuck, literally, like a cooked goose, with cousins for the upcoming season, and we have good players who can contribute in the future, needing sound contracts and intelligent use of contract money.

Extending the money pig at any price is pure folly..

I don’t care what Cousins supporters might be able to spin up about his play or stats..

We WILL NOT WIN ANYTHING, except maybe a Divisonal title, with that poser as Starting QB.

Here is a site with their top 25 FAs. https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/nfl-free-agents-2023-ranking-top-25-players-available

Hmmm, lots of offense. But there are updates on some of the defensive players:

13. Josh Jacobs, RB
Age: 25

2022 stats (Raiders): 340 carries, 1,653 yards, 12 TD; 53 catches, 400 yards

Jacobs is the anti-Pollard as far as usage goes. He's taken on a heavy workload since becoming the Raiders' starting running back in 2019. But after a career season in 2022, teams will offer him a hefty sum of money to join their backfield.

UPDATE (March 6): The Raiders reportedly plan to place the franchise tag on Jacobs.

12. Jamel Dean, CB
Age: 26

2022 stats (Buccaneers): 2 INT, 8 passes defended, 57 tackles

Dean comes in as the second-best cornerback available this offseason after a solid season in Tampa Bay. A young, reliable starting CB like Dean should be popular on the open market.

UPDATE (March 13): The Bucs are re-signing Dean on a four-year deal worth $52 million, per The Score's Jordan Schultz.

11. Daron Payne, DT
Age: 26

2022 stats (Commanders): 11.5 sacks, 64 tackles

Payne enjoyed a career year with the Commanders to set himself up well in free agency. Even if his huge 2022 season was an anomaly, the 2018 first-rounder would be a fine addition to the middle of any defensive line.

UPDATE (March 12): The Commanders have signed Payne to a four-year, $ 90 million contract extension, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

10. Jessie Bates, S
Age: 26

2022 stats (Bengals): 4 INT, 8 passes defended, 71 tackles

Bates balled out on the franchise tag and should be rewarded for it with a sizable deal in free agency. It probably won't be in Cincinnati, however, as the Bengals took his potential replacement Daxton Hill in the first round of last year's NFL Draft.

UPDATE (March 13): Bates is signing with the Falcons on a four-year, $ 64.02 million deal, per NFL Media's Tom Pelissero.

4. Javon Hargrave, DT
Age: 30

2022 stats (Eagles): 11 sacks, 60 tackles, 1 forced fumble

Hargrave has continued to be a force on the interior defensive line since joining Philadelphia in 2020. He should command plenty of attention in free agency even as he enters his 30s.

UPDATE (March 13): Hargrave will sign a four-year, $ 84 million deal with the 49ers, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

2. Roquan Smith, LB
Age: 26

2022 stats (Ravens): 4.5 sacks, 169 tackles, 3 INT, 6 passes defended

Smith didn't miss a beat after being traded by the Chicago Bears to the Baltimore Ravens. He became the only player other than Patrick Willis to record 150-plus tackles, four-plus sacks and three-plus interceptions in a single season. He's about to get a major payday as the best defensive player in this year's free-agent class.

UPDATE (Jan. 10): Smith has agreed to a five-year, $ 100 million contract with the Ravens to stay in Baltimore, per multiple reports.

Can't wait to see your plan

Why do you insist on calling him a backup when you have no clue as to the % of snaps he will play?

Moreover, are WR3 and nickelbacks "backups" too? Or are they perhaps all components essential to execute modern day schemes?

This is not the 1960s NFL.

TE as your first FA signing is very lackluster to me...

But after watching his highlight vid...

I will say I'm looking forward to seeing him and Darrisaw punish people on the left side.
This kid has some bully in him... in a good way.

The #Vikings are signing pass-rusher Marcus Davenport, sources tell me,
@MikeGarafolo
, and
@TomPelissero
. He gets a 1-year deal worth $13M. Impressive.

They must have plenty of cap moves in place?!?!?

From that site above:

18. Marcus Davenport, EDGE
Age: 26

2022 stats (Saints): 0.5 sacks, 29 tackles

The numbers above won't excite anyone, but how about Davenport's 32 pressures? He's the top edge rusher in a weak free-agent class for the position and should be paid accordingly.

9 sacks the year before.
I think he was injured last year... another risk/reward move... not sure what to think about it.

For perspective with no accuracy, another site has him as #17 for defensive FAs with Tomlinson #12.

No matter. At least one of our 38 coaches has 'ties' to him.

I'm sure he's perfect for the 3-4... or 4-3.

It's interesting, because we don't know all the moves that are about to take place, but I do believe in KAM, and this coaching staff, to target and get the guys that will come to Minnesota. I always keep in mind that not every FA out there want's to come to Minnesota. I've already expressed that I do like the signing of Oliver, but this signing simply means that Z or Daniel Hunter are gone, it's that simple. Three months from now, we will be able to see the roster with clarity, but this is a building process that is happening, reacting or overreacting at this time is just silly. This next few days will be interesting!

Sort of possible maybe so defensive starters:

DL: Phillips, Tonga, Davenport

LB: Hunter, Asamoah, Hicks (renegotiated), Jones

S: Bynum, Cine/Metellus

CB: Booth, First-round pick/Evans, Shelley?

Sort of possible is right

Hard to know while Kwesi is pulling FAs out of his .... hat.

Vikings have ZERO chance to be competitive this year with that defense and the lack of cap space and draft picks. Why bring Cousins back for one more year so they can go 8-9? Trade Cousins, get some more picks or maybe Trey Lance...worst case you go 4-13 and we get a top pick next year.

Cousins and his contract and his no trade clause are untradeable; Lance isnt going anywhere; we had no draft help, cap or defense last year and went 13-5. Try again.

Did you say the same thing last year at this time Jeff? I think the roster is already better not having Thielen and Kendricks. This isn't all about draft picks--trades, FA, UDFA, and the draft. Give them a little time.

Every time they replace younger talent it is a step in the right direction. They will have room for FA. 2024 cap space is the big thing.

The biggest hurt is the 7.5 million cap hit the Vikings take for not resigning him....

I see what he’s doing. He’s going to come to an agreement with all the FAs he’s targeted first so he knows exactly how much cap to clear AND THEN he’ll start slicing and dicing before the deadline tomorrow. Cutting edge.

Foot shackled, gagged, handcuffed, hooded and over-capped on day 2 of legal tampering … I’m predicting Shelley and another CB.
