Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports the team is looking into trade options for Hunter, letting other teams know he is available.

Awesome. Assuming teams see and value him as a 4-3 DE (imagine that) and the trade is equal value, that's good news. He might be our best defensive player, but it's easy to climb to the top of that scrap heap.

We need resources to make moves, or a singular move.

imo, kj is going to be wr#2 throughout the season...if we were committed to a QB for the next couple of seasons, i'd consider signing him to an extension....

there must have been zero offers beyond a 3rd round pick for hunter....

if we give him the no-tag, we should have signed him for three years...hell, we'll probably sign him again next season....

Based on available cap, as things stand they may have to add a bit to the $11.2 million in those void years. Maybe $5 or so million?

On the opposite side, Davenport's void year tally is $6.8 million.

Credit Card Kwesi.

Edit - I think we was going to make ~ $13 million this year (?). If so, it's just an additional $7 mil, which we have cap space for.

I think we would have traded Hunter if there had been a fair offer -versus- a 20M one year deal with a free get-out-of-town pass. The deal we gave Hunter seems like a fall back plan to me, not what we were aiming for.

IF Flores does not do a superb job and IF we do not have some complementary players come out of the woodwork, how much of a value will Hunter/20M provide?

Right now he's nothing more than a scraggly crooked tooth sticking out of a little ruffled chihuahua head – not enough to maul anybody but certainly enough to scrape a foot while getting kicked in the face.

I am praying for more than that.

Per the bolded, that is the crux of it for me. I hope there is magic on defense, but the odds say there will be significant gaps. And he is out of position. And he's going to get paid well. IMO it will take a couple of years to stockpile defensive talent, and by that time Hunter will be past his prime (which due to injuries and scheme was 2019). So a trade seemed feasible.

An equitable trade along with moving the cap savings forward while the D is sorted out would have worked. But coaches value the short-term. I doubt Flores is thinking anything more.

I don't value Bill Belichick assistants who moved up because they basically suck, although Flores (who called D plays for one year in NE) did ok. Seems like his rank or grade is incomplete.
