Did the Twins do anything exciting this offseason? One single thing?

No one is expecting them to lose money or spend a ton of money. But a #2 pitcher and another bat. Make good baseball moves. Signing Gallo and Vaszquez last year must be the 20 million they are trying to recover. It just makes less than zero sense.

The bullpen is going to be very good. Tampa Bay model.

There is a way to make money AND be competitive. The Twins have enough young, cheap talent to do both. Makes no sense to not try and acquire another really good SP so they can potentially make a run in the playoffs. They make money with home playoff games and they make more money by attracting another 7-10,000 fans per game during the season. Spend money to make money.

Bullpen...

Duran, Jax, Topa, Stewart, Thielbar, Okert, Varland, Jay Jackson, Staumont, Alcala...that's a good bullpen, but not over the top great. I really want Varland in the pen.

Lopez, TREVOR BAUER, Ryan, Ober, Paddack, DeSclafani

They will start with Varland, Staumont, Funderburk, and Alcala at AAA....no way they sign Bauer. Too many 24 type episodes during the season. Plenty of depth but no apparent #2 after Lopez.

Varland will either be in the rotation or the pen in the majors. The only way he starts the year in AAA is if he stinks it up in ST.

They will do to him what they did to Ober last year.

Lopez, Ober, Ryan, DeScini, Paddock, Duran, Jax, Jackson, Thielbar, Stewart, Topa, Okert is 12. I don't know what options Staumont, Alcala, or Funderburk has either.

They will do to him what they did to Ober last year.

More likely they will do what they did with Jax, Duran, Winder, Balazovic, Graterol, Alcala, etc.and move him to the bullpen. Ober was a much more accomplished starter going into last year than Varland is going into this year. The Twins immediately fell in love with Varland throwing 99 coming out of the bullpen last year.

Free agent RHP Jake Odorizzi, an All-Star starter in 2019, is throwing without restrictions and looking to sign a major league deal in the coming weeks.

Odorizzi, 33, has pitched off the mound this offseason in front of evaluators from 10 to 12 teams.

You know that is the type of signing we will do. I would rather see Festa or Woods Richardson pitch TBH.

Souhan wrote an article on what a shrewd strategy this is. Somehow moving Varland to the bullpen makes this a smart alternative to getting a legit #2 starter.

It's nobody's business but Diamond's and the Twins'.

Not after you claim you have no TV Deal and base your payroll on it just barely after the season is over.

Especially when the fans are footing the bill for everything. To say it's none of the fans business is bullshit.

I disagree.

And your rationale is?

We don't own the team.

If we apply your rationale anytime you are dissatisfied with a product or service you cannot complain because you "don't own the company"
You stay at a hotel with your wife and the experience is horrible. There is a plumbing issue, you can't get clean towels, etc.....
But you do not own the hotel so it isn't any of your business how it is run?

That is absolutely insane and you KNOW it is. This has been your modus operandi for some reason. I think he just want to have "conversations" no matter how ridiculous and absurd.

Pablo is the favorite to win the AL Cy Young in 2024.

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-cy-young-award-candidates-2024

1. Pablo López, RHP, Twins
2023 CYA finish: 7th

No pitcher increased his strikeout rate more from 2022 to 2023 than López (minimum 150 innings in each season), whose 29.2% mark ranked fifth among qualified starters. He went from primarily using a four-seamer and changeup to adding a sweeper to that main mix, and went from a good pitcher with a lot of promise to a Cy Young contender. López made his first All-Star team in 2023 and received Cy Young votes for the first time. I can't wait to see what he does in 2024, continuing to build off of his changes and improvements. He would be the first Twins pitcher to win a Cy Young since his idol, Johan Santana, in 2006. Imagine the emotions there.

I actually think a Festa or SWR or Varland can eventually be a decent 3 or 4.....that still is short of a #2. Maybe they have higher expectations for Ober or Ryan. Ryan did start out the season on fire and Ober was really good once called up....but uugh.

Looks like the news is better on Buxton this spring. After a procedure to remove tissue flaps that were causing his knee pain, he reports that he is 100% pain free for the first time since 2021. Supposedly there are no restrictions on what he can do in ST. How is this different?...

Last year, we started ST with the news that Buck would start out at DH while he continued to rehab his knee which was still causing him pain after an off-season "clean-up" procedure. The strange part of that strategy is that Buxton had said in the past that his knee pain affected his hitting more than anything else. When he was shut down last year, they apparently found the tissue flaps in his knee that were iminging on his patellar tendon and nerves in the knee.

So, that's it. With the flaps gone, the pain is gone. There are no structural issues with the knee. The knee supposedly should not prevent him from playing games.

Here is the problem. Most of us are at the point that we will believe a full, healthy season out of Buxton when we see it. The baseball gods seem to like screwing with Buxton. He quit running headlong into walls and things continued to happen. Remember the year, Buck missed the Puerto Rico series with a migrane, got sent to AAA to get a few AB before coming back to the lineup and fouled the first pitch he saw off of his big toe, fracturing it and essentially ending his season?

Like the poster in Fox Mulder's office "I Want to Believe". Until we get a full healthy season and playoffs from Buxton, I will be perpetually waiting for the other shoe to drop.
