If Kwesi gets muscled out of the 1st 4 and Penix is available at 11 you have to take him.

The question is would you choose him over anyone else that fell?

I predict Maye @5.

At 11? His injury history scares the hell out of me but I love his talent.

Probably.

Too many teams drafting mid-late teens that need a QB and could poach him if we try to trade down (or up from our 2nd)..

Gun to my head I think getting to 5 for JJM is the most prudent move.

What do you propose as the cost to trade up from 11 to 5? What if McCarthy is gone, but Maye is available?

Maybe next years #1 and a 3rd?

And yes to Maye.

I suppose that's possible if you're including this year's 11th overall pick. Probably take next year's #2 instead of 3. Very good chance 1 of Maye or McCarthy will be available at 11 if we don't move up.
Do you believe either or both of them will be Super Bowl quality QBs?

I'm an absolute no on McCarthy. The first quarter of the semifinal game was all I needed to see.

HOF then?

McCarthy had a sensational team around him. He doesn't strike me as a great NFL player.

Here is some of the other quarterbacks that won national titles over the past 20 years. It doesn't equate to greatness in the NFL:

Stetson Bennett
Mac Jones
Joe Burrow
Tua
Trevor Lawrence
Jalen Hurts
Deshaun Watson
Jake Coker
Cardale Jones
Jameis Winston
AJ McCarron
Cam Newton
Greg McElroy
Tim Tebow
Matt Flynn
Chris Leek
Vince Young
Matt Leinert
Matt Mauck
Craig Krenzel

7 of those have had a lot of success. Way better than average success rate for QB draft picks.

I count five or six. Burrow, Tua, Hurts, Cam. Lots of money spent on Watson for very little return (Flacco had the most success on that team in 2023). The jury is still (very much) out on Lawrence, IMO.

The bottom line is, winning in college does not equate to being a great NFL quarterback.

It equates to a much better chance of success than random drafted QBs.

I'd be very happy to take him, but not at pick 11. Has to be later.

I don't always drink beer, but when I do I prefer Dos Equis. I mean I don't always agree with Brad but I do on McCarthy. he is this years Trey Lance.

In what way?

Real young for starters. Wasn't asked to do much in that offense which leave a lot of unanswered questions.

Is he young, or are a lot of the other QBs old for rookies?

JJ has 3 years of college starting experience vs a single year for Lance.

I would probably do it too if I were KAM but I also wouldn't hate rolling with a year of Darnold and trading back a few spots to continue to build the D. That said, I don't care about making the playoffs next year.

Injuries for sure. The release don't bother me at because he's tall enough to get away with it. Not on you because I've heard this before from others but....the lack of pocket awareness makes me scratch my head. I watched him a lot and never felt that. Granted, he isn't Lamar Jackson but he can move and I didn't see him taking stupid sacks.

The perfect draft day scenario for me:

Trade Justin Jefferson to the Bears for Justin Fields and their #6 pick. Draft Joe Alt from Notre Dame at #6. Your quarterback room suddenly looks more talented and your offensive line gets a franchise player for a decade. 2nd round you get a Keon Coleman/Troy Franklin type WR.

I know people don't want to give up Jefferson, but Super Bowl champions are not built on the backs of diva wide receivers. Jefferson got his first hamstring injury in 2023. That's the beginning of the end for wide receivers. Once the soft tissue issues arise, they never seem to go away.

In addition, the Vikings need to take a page from the Patriots (in their hay day) in that you don't negotiate through the media. Jefferson needs to shut up and play football. Do what it takes to help the team. Randy Moss tried to negotiate his contract through the media and he was sent packing on the next train out of town by the Patriots. He never got his ring.

No problem with trading JJ.

But ZERO interest in Fields. I'd rather have more draft picks and they can keep him.

JJ has been the opposite of Diggs....I would be open to trading him for picks but he hasn't done anything on social media but support his QB. Pretty good trait in a player actually but he is just like the rest of the players--they work out together for years on the routes and little intricacies and now he has to start over and if we don't draft one it will be QB carousel.

Rumor is Fields isn't going for anything higher than a mid round pick right now. It would be an overpay. Max is a 2nd or 3rd rounder and rumor is they are waiting out for that.

It's not his job to support his QB in the media. That's arrogant and overplaying your hand. Shut the hell up and catch footballs. Football is a business. He created a rift in the organization by saying he wanted to keep Kirk Cousins. I'd trade him like a hot potato.

Skor North did a Mock draft:

JJ 6
Braden Fiske DL 43
Cam Hart CB 108
Javon Baker WR 129
JD Bertrand RB 157

Speed RB and Baker was a former Alabama WR that transferred to UCF. I like this mock actually.
