At this point in the process, based on everything I’ve heard, I don’t think the Vikings can afford to wait until No. 11 if they want one of the top four quarterbacks. They’re going to have to trade up. Are they giving up too much? It’s certainly possible. But if they believe McCarthy can be their long-term Kirk Cousins replacement, shouldn’t they be OK with sending out their 2025 first-rounder?

I have McCarthy at No. 14 on my Big Board, but I can see on tape why a team might take him in the top five. He has intriguing physical traits and took a huge step forward as a precision passer in 2023. In Minnesota, with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson catching his passes, he would have the playmakers around him to succeed as a rookie.

These guys all bring up our WR’s and Hock but they rarely mention Jones. That was a huge pickup for us no matter if it’s a rookie or Darnold.

(Take 2). Adofo-Mensah, like most GMs, didn't offer many specifics in this presser. But he had a few quotes worth noting. First: "Just because something's risky doesn't mean you have to stay away from it."

Also, "There are multiple [QBs] that we are in love with just on an outright basis. But there are also other guys we're in love with, given if we got them at a certain value, what they'd also be able to come with...."

"... Skill-set wise, if you're talking about the ability to overcome context, well if the guy's got less ability [to do that] but we've got assets to go get somebody that's not going to put him in that situation, those things add up too."

Essentially what he's saying is that the Vikings love at least some of the top tier QBs, who could presumably carry a team, but they also love some of the 2nd tier guys who wouldn't require a trade up, and thus would leave them with more assets to build a better team around him.

What it sounds like to me is if a guy they really love/covet is there with a trade up, they will pursue it but wont break the bank for any of them. They have set a limit as to how much they will give up to trade up and will be comfortable drafting one of the lower tier guys if they don't get one of the top guys.

I'm guessing you consider Penix and Nix lower tier guys. Is that right. I consider Maye a lower tier guy.

It depends on how you make your tiers. I can see the top tier being the usual 6 top rated QBs. Some might break that top 6 into 4 or more tiers. I don't want anybody outside of the top 6.

With an electric QB on a rookie contract, our offense how it stands, an improving D, and oodles of cash next year we can force open a 3, 4 year window to finally bring home a championship.

He's hedging his bet so no matter what happens, he can refer back to it being what we wanted all along.

I have been way more improssed with the 2024 FA plan compared to his draft plans......Aggressive and smart is always better than the cagey and smarter than the rest plans.

I’d rather that than 3 for Maye.

He’s just not moving the needle for me. Mid Maye.

Some are comping him to Josh Allen.....not sure about the comp or not but if he plays like Josh he is worth it.

It's just really odd to me that the 2nd to 3rd round guy in January is suddenly the better prospect than the guy who has been projected top 1-2 QB for the last two years, who is now the tier 4 project

smells of smoke and agenda more than anything

I see it like this:

1) Chi - Caleb Williams
2) Was - Will not take Jayden Daniels because he is similar to RGIII, runs a lot, and there is the scary elbow picture.

Washington will want to trade down (but price is too high for anyone), so they will take Drake Maye, and say that was their guy all along.

3) NE doesn't like Daniels that much, McCarthy is similar to Brady, he is a winner, but they don't want to take him this high. Ideal for them would be to trade down a few spots, or a 3 way trade. Price is again to high, so they take JJ McCarthy.

So it's:

1) Chi - Caleb Williams
2) Was - Drake Maye
3) NE - JJ McCarthy
4) Ari - Marvin Harrison Jr. They wouldn't mind trading back a few spots, but they really like Harrison, he is their pick
5) SD - Either Minnesota, Denver or NY Giants trade up to this spot, or SD takes the best OT, Alt
6)

6) NY Giants - WR Nabors
7) Tennessee - Edge Dallas Turner
8) Atlanta - Edge Jared Verse
9) Chi trades pick to Minnesota, Minnesota selects Jayden Daniels

Chicago wouldn't see it as helping, they would see it as another divisional team taking advantage of Minnesota.

Giving the Vikings an injury waiting to happen, while picking up extra picks, the Vikings once again get taken advantage of by a division foe, this time by the Bears

Who knows, Daniels could be the next Akili Smith.

I wish you were GM of the Bears.

But wouldn't want you rationalizing opportunities for the Lions or Packers as well.

Usually I hate these kind of draft articles ... 'espn gathered the latest intel from around the league,' 'sources tell us,' 'the team is leaning towards,' 'the team's preference is,' etcetcetcetcetcetc

ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller (IMO translated as ESPN paid draft fan Matt Miller) says ...

"It’s no secret the Vikings need a quarterback and are expected to be aggressive in adding one at the draft, but the front office and O’Connell — a former quarterback himself — did not attend pro day workouts of the top quarterbacks. Instead, the Vikings are trying something different. “We want to see them work out in a more intimate setting,” is how a source with the team put it. “Get them a little uncomfortable running our workout vs. theirs.”

The Vikings have scheduled private workouts with five of the top six QBs (everyone except Caleb Williams) and will use those in-person, one-on-one evaluations with more weight than the traditional pro day circuit. This is the first time I can recall a team intentionally avoiding the pro day noise in lieu of in-person scouting, but I like it."

https://www.dailynorseman.com/2024/4/12/24128451/espn-gives-minnesota-vikings-50-50-chance-trading-up-quarterback-2024-nfl-draft

--------------------

I'm all for trying something new especially in Kwesi's case.

After making trades, with picks like Lewis Cine and Andrew Booth Jr., the other GMs in the division aren't too afraid of making deals with Kwesi.

You are just arguing to argue.

You don't enter into competition by creating opportunities for your opponents. Period.

Football is a QB driven sport. The Vikings need a QB, the world knows this. Improving their chances of landing their QB target is helping them reach a goal. Period.

What teams do with their opportunities is a separate matter.
