Next week feels like a game comprised of two 10-7 teams. Typical fodder created from the ever expanding NFL playoff pool. By rule, one team has to survive another week only to get trounced after that.

I expect Baltimore vs Philly in the SB.

GREAT post Brad !!!

THIS:

Darnold is more athletic than Kirk, and attacks deeper more often, but he is only one step above Kirk, for an extended playoff run you need a QB that is another step higher than both of them.

You need a QB that will be calm and throwing on target from the get go in a playoff game. Sam was predictably taking a couple steps then firing, sometimes you need someone that will move around just a little longer to make something happen.

Sometimes it's good if the QB quickly and decisively takes off running to keep the defense from getting a beat on where he's going to be, or what he wants to get out of a certain play.

Sometimes a QB needs to be good at anticipating what a defense will do, and will either audible, or will fool the defense into something, and then make them pay.

Maybe McCarthy is that guy, he gets another shot next week, but appears that Darnold is not that guy.

The Vikings tonight:

4 times reaching red zone but not scoring a TD
3 times having goal-to-go but not scoring a TD
2 failed 4th-and-goal attempts
1 missed FG

No other NFL team in the last 30 years has done all of that in the same game.

gIvE sD aHuGe CoNtRaCt, nOw!

If one road game was the reason for a contract....no qbs would be paid.

If teams looked at how a QB did on the road against teams that were in the playoffs, maybe there would be fewer teams overpaying on marginal QBs.

KOC doesn't move to the short passing game when needed.....another thing that Tom Brady did also. Go 5 wide and get rid of the ball.
Against a team that loves to blitz we gave up on the run and went with Medium to deep passing routes most of the game.....we can blame the IOL but the scheme wasn't there either.

Did someone mention Darnold looked like he was seeing ghosts?

ESPN Research credited Darnold with eight overthrows in the first half. The only game of his career in which he exceeded a 34% off-target rate was when he played for the New York Jets in 2019, in a matchup with the New England Patriots in which NFL Films recorded him saying that he was "seeing ghosts" on the sideline.

Its a different game if Sam isn't hyperventilating from the start.

Missed Hock high on two easy 3rd down conversions in the first quarter. Missed JJ high on two easy TDs. Took a massive sack instead of throwing the ball away. He had a couple throws to spots that didn't have a receiver or defender within 10 yards.

Detroit gave us every opportunity to score early and often and we shit the bed.

That said, KOC equally shit the bed. He let Campbell get into his head and kept leaving points on the field by being overaggressive. He abandoned a working running game continually in a 1 score game.

We apparently have no quick hitters in our playbook. Either that or KOC refused to call them and/or Sam refused to throw them.

They had 1 decent healthy player in their secondary - AND THEY LOST HIM TO INJURY DURING THE GAME. Did we make them pay? Not once.

I was all for franchising Sam and giving JJ a 2nd redshirt year. But unless we see a different Darnold next week, I'd rather spend that 41M on both of our lines.

For all the "wake up call" folks let's get real. It's not like the offense was even remotely competitive. If they can't wake up for the top seed and division title then there's no hope for them.

Closer to farcical.

Key elements lack the mental makeup.

I saw nothing competent out of last nights game on offense or special teams. Other clubs are drooling to play against this lot. It's not like the defense is super elite but at least they held it down for 3 quarters. It's not hard for me to see which coach is making a difference.

Pretend champagne baths last week for accomplishing literally NOTHING.

There was Kirko Chains.

There was Darnold channeling his inner Ricky Bobby not knowing 'what to do with his hands' (weird) while being hoisted and drenched like Bill Parcells after a SB win.

Consistent winner of the most creative end zone celebrations.

Nauseating.

Imagine if this team had to go to Philly to play.

Bingo. That stupid celebration had me thinking these guys don't really believe anything but currently punching above their weight. A team ready to make a run isn't celebrating beating a 3rd place division foe.

Jets are interviewing EVERYONE.

I bet they go with Rex Ryan...

The New York Jets have requested to interview Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik for their head coach vacancy, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Jets have also requested to speak with Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Rapoport reports.

Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy are also drawing interest from the Jets, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler.

New York has also requested to interview Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, a source told MMQB's Albert Breer.

Slowik, 37, interviewed for multiple openings last season. The Texans offense wasn't as explosive as it was in 2023, averaging 21.9 points and 319.7 yards per game this season. Both marks ranked in the bottom half of the league.

Smith's Steelers offense was comparable this season. The 42-year-old's unit posted 319.4 yards and 22.4 points per contest. Smith recorded three consecutive 7-10 seasons as the Atlanta Falcons' head coach from 2021-23.

The Bills' offense was one of the NFL's most explosive. Brady's unit ranked 10th in yards (359.1) and second in points (30.9) per game.

Denver's defense ranked seventh in yards allowed (317.1) and third in points surrendered (18.3) per game under Joseph. The 52-year-old was the Broncos' head coach from 2017-18, recording an 11-21 mark.

Nagy, 46, also has previous head coaching experience. He went 34-31 as the Chicago Bears' bench boss from 2018-21 before joining the Chiefs in 2022. K.C. posted 327.6 yards and 22.6 points per game this campaign.

Flores' defense ranked fifth in scoring, allowing 19.5 points per game this season. The Vikings were also tied for the league's most takeaways (33). Flores is another candidate with head coaching experience, owning a 24-25 record from his time as the Miami Dolphins' head coach (2019-21).

New York is scheduled to speak with former head coach Rex Ryan, has requested interviews with 49ers quarterbacks coach Brian Griese and Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, and is expected to request an interview with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, according to Schefter.

Others have said it but I'm going to reiterate it. This loss was on KOC. Yeah, Darnold was horse crap. No doubt. That said, if an idiot on this board (me) knows:

You IOL isn't a strength
Det is all out blitzing you up the middle
Your QB is having a very bad start to the night and looks out of sync

Why on earth did KOC not abandon his gameplan and adjust to a short passing game and a heavier run game? You can always go back to your bread and butter but my God, give Darnold a chance to get in some sort of rhythm.

Another note. Others brought it up weeks ago and I shrugged it off as not that big of a deal. They were right. We should have shut down Reichard for the year and kept Romo. That dude is not right. Whether it's physical still or now mental, that injury has derailed him.

Missing an occasional 50+ yarder is life as an NFL kicker. We are way past that.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I did see quick hitters make an appearance. It was when it was too late.

He was so solid it was a boon to our game. That’s gone now. Ow it’s hold your breath like every other one.

What makes this so frustrating is that the game was so winnable. Detroit has weapons but they didn't really beat us. We beat ourselves. So many moments that we just, literally and figuratively, "dropped the ball".

4 deep RZ drives with no TD's
won the TO battle
Van Gink's drop turned in to a 14 point swing
The obvious blown call for the safety by the refs
kicking it OOB to gift Det 3 going in to the half

Ughhhh
