I imagine it is equal parts pride and fear on behalf of the young man you raised. Keep focusing on the pride and hopefully his time at that assignment will go fast.

South Korea can be a lot of fun. It all just depends on where he ends up. I had a blast both years I spent there.

My brother-in-law was recently stationed in South Korea for 3 years. He and his family had a great time and they made sure to take advantage of his off time to travel to places they'd otherwise never get a chance to see.

They went to Japan, Vietnam and a few other places.

Well he's more excited about it than I am that's for sure. I'm sure he'll go every where he can. He's in it for the adventure. Eight kids went to Guantanamo and a lot went to Washington (which is where I was hoping he'd go) but he's the only one going to South Korea out of his class

That same thing happened to me. Out of, probably 30, I was the only one to Korea. Everyone else was Germany. I was like "wth?"

BTW- He'll love Jeju Island if he gets to go. Especially where he'll be stationed. I was in Seoul so it was a bit of a hike. I never did make down there but always wanted to.

I love hearing about the different places. We always said we are going to go where ever he is at to visit - within reason of course

I was at Osan AB. Great assignment.

I'm sure he can get up to Seoul a couple or few times as well as the other places mentioned.

Ricky, thanks for raising a son with a mind/body/desire to serve. Hope he loves his time abroad; I can only speak for Thailand (and greater Los Angeles), but Asia has a lot to offer.

Thanks to all who serve and/or have family serving.

I don't know anything about the transportation but I just found out South Korea is about the size of Florida. So getting to Seoul shouldn't be to hard to pull off.

Thanks bohumn - appreciate it.

Won't be hard at all. They have a nice train system. We went from Seoul to Pusan in about 4 hours. Pusan is the very end of the country.

Yea Ricky and Japan isn't even the best place he can visit. I mean japan has some pretty cool places to go, but you need a landing visa to go there, they can go to Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Bali, Hong Kong, Cambodia, just to name a few and you don't need a Visa to go there and they are all within a few hours flight. Its' a great opportunity for them, they should be excited, not to mention the growth people experience living outside the U.S.!

I think about your plight and try to send positive energy your way. But sadly I'm broke and those delivery charges are steep...
