Souhan knows less about hockey than he does about football, which he knows less about than basketball, which knows less about than baseball. And frankly he is pretty dumb about baseball, which is saying something because he used to be the Twins beat writer. It was a typical lazy article, blaming Fenton for not making the playoffs because he didn't use an anlytics based approach to his moves. Putting this on Fenton instead of Fletcher is just plain stupid. Fletcher tried to build a winner by accumulating a volume of slightly above average players, while never trying to do anything to address the core. He overpaid to keep what he had. You can lay a lot of the blame on Leo too because he was the one who was obsessed with signing Parise and Suter, no matter what the cost. In the end, he had a capped out team that was never capable of more than getting bounced in the first round. Whether we like any of the Fenton trades individually, when you look at them cumulatively, he freed a lot of cap space by trading away talented under achievers. For the first time in a long time, the Wild can go shopping in the off season. This is big because there is no getting rid of Suter and Parise unless they decide to retire. This is the last year of Koivu and Fenton doesn't seem to have anything close to Fletch's infatuation with Mikko.
