Now other sources are saying there is no deal yet.

That makes more sense.

I question anyone crazy enough to take the Gophers football job in this climate. But I guess the money is mostly guaranteed.

Claeys was on between the lines, says he was told in NOV he'd be retained, believes the boycott cost him the job.

Sharp as a tack, that guy is.

Fox 9 and KSTP are reporting it as a done deal....but Les was in MSP just in case.

I'm fully prepared to be colossally disappointed...but that's just the Gopher fan in me, I guess.

Glad they didn't go Miles though, I think that would've been even worse.

Startribune. 5 year deal is done. Money unknown. But a source has said the U's cap was 3.5 million a year.

Plane is being sent to Mich to get him. Press conference at TCF stadium this afternoon.

$3.5M per year puts him solidly in the upper half of Big Ten coaches.

We could have done far worse.

Hopefully Fleck has some power neg in there. Coyle appears like a guy who enjoys looking down on others yielding his power recklessly.

With Pitino (34) and Fleck (36) I wonder if there's a major college anywhere that has a younger combo BB and football coaches.

I remember when I used to feel old when I got older than the players I was rooting for. Now the coach was born after I graduated from high school.

Hopefully they both grow old as Gopher coaches because they turn out to be record-setting, championship winning, legacy coaches.

So we get the Brewster style rah-rah guy. Except this guy comes with a head coaching resume. He had the top ranked recruiting class in the MAC for 4 years straight. You might say MAC, big deal. But they all have roughly the same recruiting limitations and he consistently was at the top. That's how you build a program. First and foremost you need the horses.

And he took that MAC team to a bigger bowl game than the Gophers have played in over 50 years. I can live with a lot of bumper sticker cliches if he wins and runs a solid program.

Fleck had a lot of talent on that Western Michigan team. They looked like a program that could compete with anyone.

The last coaches we had couldn't figure out that Leidner was a bum for 3.5 years.

WMU was 9th in the nation in offense. We should be a lot better at attracting NFL caliber QB's now.

The Gophers had defensive talent to win 10 games and contend for the title. Claeys is a very good defensive coach that was too buddy buddy with his players. He isn't a bad coach---he would be a great MAC coach and after a couple years of seasoning could be ready.

And they still won 9 games with him at QB. Shows how weak B10 was.

Precisely. If the Gophers had a quarterback, they could have been playing for something much more prestigious last week. I can't tell you how many games I have seen that kid throw away in the past 3.5 years.

First thing he may want to do is find a good diet, or he will be dead before he finds his next job. Seriously, I look at that guy and wonder when he is going to drop dead on the sidelines. Dude has to be pushing 4-bills.

He loves to cook...they did a big article about the diner him and his sister owned. Great guy. Just not quite ready to take the Gophers over the top.

Seriously, I watch that guy on the sidelines and I am worried about him. He's going to pay a big price down the road.

I like the guy. He seems like a good guy.

First of all let me say that I have no idea if Fleck is at long last the guy to lead us out of decades of embarrassment and mediocrity. What I do like is that Coyle identified his guy right away and went out and got him. We were spared the embarrassing cluster f***s that were previous major coach searches conducted by Teague and Maturi.

After hearing about how Norwood had a short list of BB coaches in his pocket at all times courtesy of his great Villa 7 program, we were subjected to a series of thanks but no thanks response including Flip Saunders who absolutely bled maroon & gold before settling for Pitino based on his name more than any accomplishments. Joel Maturi was even worse by first using an outside service to get us Basement Brew and then going through an embarrassing string of talking to coaches without getting permission from the schools’ permission first, getting doors slammed in his face, having alumni urging coaches not to come and work for him and finally settling on Kill and trying to pass him off as his first choice.

Coyle has a bit more of a major league feel to him than our last couple of AD's. From his comments when announcing the firing of Claeys, I got the sense that he knows you have to invest in a real coach and be ready to pay him at this level. He seems to understand that an athletic department at this level is a big time operation and it has to be run as such. Athletic departments have to be self-funding and the success of high revenue sports is crucial. I don’t know if he got the right guy or not. I do appreciate the way he went about getting him though.
