Muschamp is already the coach-in-waiting at Texas.  Gibbs is not the son of Joe Gibbs, but his dad is a long-time NFL coach, offensive line guru Alex Gibbs.

You're right.  My bad on Gibbs.  Think before typing....

We'll wait and see on Muschamp.  Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.  It did not for Gopher wrestling, and now Marty Morgan is helping train Brock Lesnar.  LOL

It seems like Jo Pa continued to have a lot of success long after he hit his sixties. {shrug}

I know this will get me crucified (I'll say it anyway)
JoePa and I have had the same impact on Penn State football the past couple years. IMO.
He's a symbol. That's an odd situation there. I mean really ... watch his pressers .... "Hey! You kids! Get off my lawn!"

Pretty true. I don't know at what point it became that way, but it has certainly been true for a while now.

He makes $900k as an assistant at Texas. If he believes he'll get the job in 2-3 years I don't see how he leaves, but if it's going to be a decade, his stock would have to erode or else the job would fall in his lap, anyways.

Its not a bad list, at all ...
But if anything is certain ...
It is that we will find some way to F it up.

And I think we'd all like that trend to stop, please.

Good to see the Gophers finally realize the fraud that Brewster was/is. Big Ten school deserves better than a jackwagon like him.

It wasn't the loss to South Dakota, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin, but losing to Purdue!  On the road!  NO sir, we can't stand for that!

What an embarrassment this program is.

Right on Ryan.
Thats why I laughed when they kind of screwed Brewster over by saying we had winnable games left at Purdue and vs PSU.
We've never beaten those teams consistently, why is now any different?
We were sounding alarms in here years before anyone at the U was about this guy.
Gray remains the tipping point for me.
Here you finally out-recruit the rst of th country for a blue-chipper, and he sits behnid a guy that isn't winning us games or making a difference.
Where was the panic and ultimatums then?

Don't let Maturi lead the search for the new football coach.....dump his sorry ass and hire a new AD first......or keep him locked up in his office, ask Tony Dungy to head the search committee, and keep Maturi so far away from the candidates and allow him zero input in the decision.

Don't kid yourself.  It was the loss to SD.

If not for that loss, Brewster would still be here.  If they had won that game, and every other game was unchanged, nobody would be too thrilled at this point, but they'd be saying "Well we only lost by a point to NW, we didn't get completely embarrased by USC" etc. etc.  Brewster would still be on the hot seat, don't get me wrong, and probably still would be canned at the end of the year, but there's no way he would have been fired this week.

That loss put eveyone in the mindset that this was a new low for Gopher football.  And Maturi needed to fire him now, otherwise people would have started calling for Maturi's head too.

Does anyone really trust that Maturi will make a good hire if he is in charge of the process?????????

The extension of Mason and then the firing and buyout?
The hiring of a guy with no head coaching or coordinator experience?

There is now way that the Gophers pull Peterson away from Boise State unless they offer him 5+ million/year which is what many schools will probably offer after this season, schools that don't need as much rebuilding as the Gopher program.  And I don't think he will leave for 5 million cause Boise State is gonna restructure his contract after this season, especially if they end up playing for a national title.  Have the Gophers considered installing a maroon or gold field?

Miles I don't think Boise will ever get a shot to play for #1 with the schedule they keep having. Saban and Meyer only make $4 million so no way will Boise cough up that kind of money.

And when you talked about Maturi's ineptness, you forgot he just extended Brewster in Jan and now has another buyout

The Brewster extension wasn't that bad. It seems to be pretty standard operating procedure in college athletics and the buyout amount was reduced as a result.

What did the extension actually get Brewster though?  I thought it was really not much of an extension, but just sounded like one.

We just want our own Kirk Ferentz or Brett Bielema.  Is that too much to ask?  They are probably saying the same thing at Iowa State, Illinois, Indiana, MICHIGAN, etc. The point is, there are LOTS of good coaching candidates out there.

At least we have a head-start on the search.

Yeah I don't remember the specifics, maybe someone else can fill it in, but I remember at the time the extension was given, the buyout provisions were actually reduced.  And Brewster was all bravado about it, like "That's fine.  I don't mind being held accountable, having pressure to win...etc Gopher nation, etc, Rose Bowl, etc, etc, etc".

In College you need someone not only good at coaching, but good at recruiting as well.  Whomever we get, needs to be topnotch at keeping Minnesota's top recruits in the State of Minnesota.  the Gopher's problems have only been partially tied to coaching, when you don't recruit well, you will struggle no matter how well you are coached.  We need a top notch recruiter for this job.  And he will have an uphill climb no matter what considering the recent (meaning last 35-40 years) history of this football program.  It is not a desirable landing spot for top recruits right now and until that changes...this program will continue to struggle.

That applies both ways Scott. Brewster has recruited far better athletes than Mason. There is more size on speed on both sides of the ball than I can ever remember under Mason. There is also a greater depth of athlete than ever before. The problem is that he can't coach them worth a crap.

Plus he's recruited them for multiple systems. See: Gray.

I kinda threw that 5 million out there.......if Boise State gets to play for #1, they will rip up Peterson's contract for what, the third year in a row and try and give him a new one.....no, it probably wouldn't be for 5 million but he is at 1.5 or 1.6 million per now.  But there is no way if I am Peterson that I would go to the U of M.....there will be other institutions calling on him, schools that are much closer to respectability in football than the U of M.  If the institution (BSU) were to play for a national championship, imagine the financial stakes for the institution.  Now Idaho is similar to states like the Dakotas, etc..(very conservative with citizens who don't like the idea that their football coach earns 8 to 10 times more than their governors)......there are many within the state that do not want Boise State to succeed....i.e., Univ of Idaho which is their major research institution and Idaho State, smaller school in terms of student numbers but more graduate programs than Boise State.....Boise State is a very young school....it has had rapid growth in undergrad numbers because of the growth of Boise which is a really really nice small city with a great climate.  They elected a while ago to focus on athletics to build the schools reputation and it has been effective....it hasn't had too much affect on research and academic prestige but they have 20,000 students.  Even though it is natural for the school to increase research capacity, etc., because it is located in the states metropolitan area, the other two will be pulling hard to keep the school in its place.

I know that the football forces that be will do all they can to keep Boise State from playing for the national title......they will cite schedule as the primary reason.....but if Boise State goes undefeated again and doesn't get in, there will be that much more ammunition and a stronger argument for a playoff using the bowl system.

Boise State has defeated a Virginia Tech team that has reeled off a string of victories since its opening loss to Boise State.  They beat Oregon State.  The weakness of their schedule is the product of their conference.  They play a more demanding non conference schedule than many teams.  A couple of years ago, we saw them defeat a very very good Oklahoma team in the bowl game.

And just consider:  Do you really think Boise State wouldn't be unbeaten had they played the same schedule as the U of M thus far?  Boise State wouldn't have beaten USC?

I also wonder if Boise State would let Peterson walk.  They let Dan Hawkins go to Colorado and got better.  Dan Monson let Gonzaga and they have been better with Mark Few, though basketball is not football.

PA this morning threw out the name Scott Linehan as next Gopher coach. This could be just like Pete Carroll leaving the NFL and back to college. It is food for thought

Miles VT lost to a DII team right after they lost to Boise St

Meanwhile, a few of the more notable names rose to the surface once again. Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, who is host of a satellite-radio program, was asked on the air about the Gophers' opening, saying: "I haven't given it much thought. But it's a good program -- it's in the Big Ten."

Don't assume, big fella. Don't assume.
Lays it right out there ... wants the job ... could care less about why or where.
Not sure if we want to go down that road.
WTH ... probably wouldn't hurt to have a little of that attitude about it.
