You know what?  If that's the interest Maturi is drumming up (Linnehan and Bevell) I'm out.  I'm not spending hard earned money on that crap.  That's just pathetic.

Scratch the whole search.  Just get Bill Fagerbakke aka Dauber on Coach in here.  Lets turn the whole F-ing thing in to one big sitcom.

It's WAY too early to assume the list is done. And most of the names are purely media driven.

He is already a head above Brewster in experience since he is an OC, not just a TE coach

I'm not saying I'm for hiring him though. As for Linehan he was a OC at a very successful program in Louisville and then was a OC & HC in the NFL. Once again I'm not saying he is the hire, but he does have the resume for it

I doubt those two are even being considered. They are just names the media is throwing out there to spark discussion. I don't care who it is, so long as the guy is adept at implementing a system, recruiting the right players for the system and coaching the players to the best of their abilities within that system. Give me that and the name is just something to call the guy.

PA this morning threw out the name Scott Linehan as next Gopher coach. This could be just like Pete Carroll leaving the NFL and back to college. It is food for thought

Miles VT lost to a DII team right after they lost to Boise St

They lost to James Madison....I think James Madison is Division I FCS and has a very good program.  The defeat to Boise State by VT was devastating....they should have beaten James Madison.  And Oregon State, a preseason top 20 team has now lost 3 games..............in other words, Boise State went out and strengthened their non conference schedule....VT has been one of the top programs in the country the past 10 years, Oregon State has been a very good program.....and the year Boise State has things in place, the two schools they had on their non conference schedule have laid eggs so should Boise State be penalized?

If you represent one of the BCS conferences, you would say damn right.

I say if Boise State is soooooo overhyped and not in the same category of the teams from the "great conferences", then let's have a playoff system so the Ohio States can show everyone how pathetic the Big Ten really is.  It is not the conference of strength in football that it was when Ohio State and Michigan dominated with Woody and Bo.

And Oklahoma, undefeated and moving up in the polls, squeaked by Utah State in its opener 31-24 in Norman.  UTAH STATE for crying out loud.  A slight step above NDSU, SDSU and USD.

Everyone needs to take a step back and look at college football.......the playing field has been leveled tremendously since the BCS schools are limited to 90 scholarships and the FCS schools get 60 scholarships.

Does anyone really think that the University of Indiana's football program is light years ahead of the Bison of NDSU?

Maybe the Gophers should hire Lee Corso.

In 1974, UND went into Memorial Stadium and faced the Gophers with an option QB and a very good wide receiver.  The Sioux led at halftime, 21 to 14.  In the second half, Gophers moved Rick Upchurch from wide receiver to the backfield......they simply pitched Upchurch the ball and no one on the Sioux team had the speed to catch someone with world class speed that Upchurch possessed.  The Gophers won the game 42 to 30....but the Sioux had amassed as much yardage as the Gophers (yes, I realize it was the Cal Stoll era).  The Sioux manhandled the Gophers defensive line in the first half.

That was a time when DI programs were not limited in scholarships and DII programs were way behind DI.

There is a much more level playing field today.

Boise State would run the table in the Big 10.

As far down as the Gophers are, it really should not take too much to make them competitive in the Big 10.  It should not require a Miracle Worker.

Great post Miles.
Love anything Upchurch/Foggie/etc related.
There were actually some fun years for Gopher football.
No one under 20 knows it, but there were.
And you are spot-on about the levels even-ing out.

Good, because we won't be hiring one.  I don't care who they hire, the guy will not be a Miracle Worker.  He will however be in charge of what SHOULD be a good program year in and year out.  We now have the state of the art stadium, we are the only D-I school in the state, and are in a BCS conference.  We have some decent young talent.  We'll have Gray and most of the rest of the offensive skill positions back.  The defense is very young as well.

The talent here, if properly coached, should be enough to be at least .500 in the Big Ten, in 2011.

I agree completely.........Brewster was clearly in over his head....good recruiter but where was his record of running a program?

The person needs to have had at least been successful as either a defensive coordinator or offensive coordinator where his role has involved supervision of various coaches.  I would like some head coaching experince as well but we might not get that.  At the least, coordinator experience.

And I agree....the U of M has too much to offer to settle for mediocrity in its football program.

There was some talk Tuesday that some local dreamers will try to bring Lou Holtz, 73, back as Gophers football coach, with a master plan that Holtz's son Skip, the coach at South Florida, would succeed his dad at Minnesota.

So did Shooter hear Sid say this or some nonsens?

Because they have other sports as well.  They are a long way from those institutions in terms of overall institutional strength, etc.  There is no way that they would have gotten into the Pac 10, even with their strength in Football.

Presidents have to approve additions to conferences.

Have you not read the posts I have made about Boise State?  There is a huge difference between Boise State's academics and the other schools in the Pac 10.  They are  not a comprehensive Ph.D. institution. They have 20,000 students but a handful of PhD programs.  The other schools in the Pac 10, including Colorado and Utah, are light years ahead of Boise State academically.

Presidents of institutions have to approve conference changes.  No way would the Pac 10 Presidents have admitted Boise State.  No way in the world.....their application would have been laughed at.

The Pac 10 schools have bring in grants and contracts on the order of 500 million per year.....some more (Cal, some less, Washington State).  But all bring in significant dollars.

Boise State's grants and contracts is probably on the order between 10 and 25 million per year.

Their conference affiliation is determined not only by one sport....but all sports and (and) the type of instittution that they are.  They are a third tier institution in Idaho alone.  Both Idaho University and Idaho State are more comprehensive institutions.

I am quite surprised that Nebraska was allowed to join the Big 10.  They are not in the same category academically as the rest......they are significantly behind Iowa State as an institition in terms of visibility beyond athletics.......way behind.  Academically, they are on par with KState, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.......KU, Missouri are ahead and Iowa State is on top.

Include the Texas schools:  UT > Texas A&M > Baylor > Other Texas Schools ~ Oklahoma.

IN the Big Ten:  All schools are very similar academically...some stronger than others....U of M is very near the top.  Weak sisters in the big 10 are Univ. of Iowa and now the weakest is Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Northwestern, despite its small undergraduate enrollment, has a very large graduate school enrollment and a very strong medical school and law school.  Purdue is a great engineering university.

This was a huge win for NEbraska Lincoln.....to go into the Big 10.  Not so much for football but a huge win for the University as a whole.

If Sid continues to make the assertion that the U of M places such huge obstacles for its coaches because of its higher academic standards than the rest of the Big 10 institutions (which I think is false), I wish someone would ask Sid how the Navy and Air Force have been able to be competitive the past few years.  Do they have high academic standards for incoming players?

Jim,
Apology not needed....but I don't think people fully get the story from the typical sports people regarding conference allignments.  It isn't just about sports.  They try to match up institutions with other similar institutions...sometimes they get it right, sometimes its a bad marriage.
There really shouldn't necessarily be much of a connection between academics and athletics......MIT and Cal Tech do not field intercollegiate athletic teams yet represent two of the nations finest institutions.  The National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and other granting agencies could care less about an institutions athletic teams when awarding research grants.  That is why, despite the visibility of a Univ. of Alabama and Univ. of Oklahoma in football and their long time excellence, said football visibility doesn't necessarily translate into academic success.  Both institutions, fine schools, are not in the same category of Big 10 institutions in terms of academics.  So when these conference allignments are made, they not only have some basis in their regional locations, they also have a history of grouping similar institutions.

The Univ. of Colorado and Univ. of Utah are excellent fits for the Pac 10.  Their universities are very similar to UCLA's, USC's Univ of Washington, Cal, Stanford (the latter two are the academically elite in the conference).  The presidents of these schools had no problem with adding Colorado or Utah.  They might have balked at adding University of Oklahoma but would have taken U of Texas Austin and probably Texas A&M in a heartbeat.

I am still surprised that the Big Ten accepted University of Nebraska Lincoln.  I really think they did so more for the money the school will bring to the Big 10 network and Nebraska's national following of football rather than the similarity of Lincoln with the other schools.  Lincoln is a fine school but it isn't in the same category of Big Ten Schools.  Iowa State would have been a better match in terms of academics but their athletic programs are not at the Big 10 level.

The Blue Field is a huge home field advantage.....hard for the TV viewer to see the players but likewise, hard for the opposition to see the Boise State team.

And I still want a gold or maroon field for the Gophers.....someone needs to develop a variety of grass that utilizes a different chlorophyl type molecule, one that is gold or maroon and not necessarily green.

Gentlemen, we can recolor it. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic grass.

Bruininks: U coach is Maturi's call
But the athletic director will be “consulting very heavily with me and with people who can help him,” the U president said in an interview Tuesday.

I think Bruininks is going to be more heavily involved in this hire.  He is saying it is Maturi's call and praises the AD but he also notes that he has followed a few coaches and their careers.....people who think would be a good fit.

Whether or not you agree with Bruininks, this is an interesting interview which provides some insight into the guy who ultimately will make the decision.
