SMF bailed on his Hardy avatar when the magnifying glass turned to Baltimore. Maybe he sensed the O's and Hardy can't handle it? Go Royals!

If you've noticed, when people put their loved ones on avatars ... its similar to the SI jinx.
Not doing that to my boy.
So far, so good.
If he gets a ring, he's getting plastered all over here.

There's nothing JJ cant handle

Except a stupid manager named Ron Gardenhire and stupid coaches like Ullger and Vavra who want to turn a power hitting shortstop into a slappy and completely revamp the way a gold glove shortstop fields.

This is a tough choice......after 29 years, I would love for an I-70 WS. But I also love any team that has Hardy as it shortstop and is smart enough to let the guy play his game. And a team that has lost its 2 top position players and doesn't miss a beat, that is a team you have to root for.

Should be a great ALCS.....as long as Yost doesn't over manage like he probably will.

Hardy scores.

Man he'd have been TOOO Expensive for the Twins

Shaking up the free agent market before it opens, and boldly looking to the future even as they prepare to open play in the ALCS, the Orioles have agreed to terms on a multi-year extension with shortstop J.J. Hardy.

Hardy will receive $40MM over a guaranteed three year term, representing a $13.5MM average annual value, though that must be discounted somewhat to reflect the deal’s inclusion of $6.5MM in deferred money. Hardy also gets a fourth-year vesting option, based upon plate appearances.

With the new deal, Baltimore will keep its key cog up the middle under team control through at least 2017, his age-34 season. And the free agent market has now lost one of its most appealing everyday position players.

After seemingly reaching terms on a deal with J.J. Hardy, the Orioles are now “pushing” to get a contract done with fellow free agent-to-be Nelson Cruz, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports on Twitter.

Cruz, 34, enjoyed a monster season at the plate in his first year with the O’s, hitting an MLB-best 40 home runs while working his way to a strong .271/.333/.525 batting line. While he’s been known to have injury problems in the past, Cruz tied a career-best with 159 games played this season.

Cruz is currently playing on a one-year, $8MM contract after struggling to find a suitable multi-year deal last offseason on the heels of a PED suspension and a qualifying offer. The slugging DH/outfielder recently switched agents, signing on with Diego Bentz of Relativity Sports, so he’ll have different representation this time around than he did when negotiating his last contract.

If the two sides do indeed reach a deal, the free agent market will take a significant hit today.

Great deal on Hardy. Good for them. I'm not bitter, really.

As for Cruz, depends on the years. If it's for 3-4 years, I could easily see that one biting them. The guy will turn 35 next season.

The worst part about that deal for us, well, besides you know, giving up JJ Hardy, was that it was to "save money" so they could compound their bad decision and keep Matt freaking Capps. Capps made $7.15M that year (2011) while Hardy made $5.85M.

They could have easily kept Hardy and spent $1.3M on a reliever that was waaaayyy better than Matt Capps.

Just for "fun", their valuations that year by Fangraphs:

JJ Hardy: 4.3 WAR, $19.3M in value
Matt Capps: -0.2 WAR, -$.9M in value

Ya, you read those right.

Oh wait, I forgot Hardy wasn't very good this year because he only had 9 HR's, a .268 BA, and 52 RBI (less than Mauer)....

Read the SI article on Donnie Moore, all these years after the playoff HR.

Dude had a very troubled side. And he pitched through a lot of pain.

Whoops, this could NEVER be the MANAGER or FRONT OFFICE's fault

Surely a fluke that the "Twins way" hasn't been represented.

@richardjustice
MLB Competitive Balance desk: 15 of 30 teams have played at least 1 postseason series last 3 seasons. Including 2011, 19 of 30 is number.

so they're deeply entrenched in the have nots.

And the Pohl-adiots keep things intact as long as they can.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I certainly remember where I was when I saw that. I was in Oneonta, NY at a buddies house on West St. He is a Sox fan so he was elated (he wouldn't be in a couple of weeks). I'm pretty sure we were having a few beers warming up to go "downtown" (if you can call it that) which was probably only a mile walk tops

He committed suicide not too long after that. Just a couple of year. I'd thought more time went by

For the Dodgers, the move to add Friedman is a part of a broader shift towards modernizing baseball operations, Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com reports. If the launch of big spending and major moves was phase one of the new ownership group’s plans, then Friedman will be entrusted to engineer phase two: a bid to make the Dodgers the powerhouse franchise and brand of the 21st century, driven by a traditional scout-and-develop approach that is informed and supplemented by analytics and a robust war chest.

Analytics/Twins are polar opposites. MN will join the 21st Century when

They're sold and Ryan is replaced.

General manager Jon Daniels called new Texas Rangers manager Jeff Banister a winner and a survivor during a conference call with reporters Thursday night.

Banister, the 18th full-time manager in team history, will be formally introduced Friday morning. He takes over a team that finished with the third-worst record in baseball at 67-95 this past season.

Daniels said the organization started with 40 candidates for the managerial job before paring the list of names to eight. From there, the Rangers focused on three finalists, including Tim Bogar, who took over as the interim manager in September after Ron Washington resigned for personal reasons.

After spending 29 seasons in the Pirates organization, Jeff Banister is headed to Texas.

Bogar was given high praise for leading the Rangers to a 14-8 mark and appeared to be the favorite for the job, but in the interview process, Banister was just better, according to Daniels.

"When you interview for any position, unfortunately you're only going to hire one guy," Daniels said. "And by definition you're going to disappoint others involved. It's not a situation of Tim or anybody else, quote unquote losing. It's really a situation where Jeff won the job and felt like he was the best fit."

Banister, 50, spent 29 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, the last five as their bench coach. He has held a variety of jobs for the Pirates, including an eight-year stint as the minor league field coordinator.

Banister's first job as a manager was for Welland in the New York-Penn League in 1994, before leaving to become the manger for Class-A Augusta the next season.

"I want to thank the Texas Rangers for giving me this opportunity," Bannister said in a statement. "I am elated to have the chance to make an impact on the organization, and I look forward to getting started on that task.

"I also want to express my gratitude to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the last 29 years. My experiences in that organization have prepared me well for this new opportunity, and I thank all of the individuals who have poured into my life along the way."

Banister recovered from bone cancer and osteomyelitis (an infection of the bone or bone marrow) during his minor league playing career. He played in just one game in the big leagues, recording a base hit in his lone at bat.

Banister was also temporarily paralyzed from a home plate collision when he played junior college baseball in Baytown, Texas.

"Jeff is a Texas native, a son of two educations, his father, a high school football coach, he's a winner, he's a survivor in every sense of the word," Daniels said. "He played football and baseball as an amateur. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization."

Banister forged a close relationship with current Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, who is highly regarded within the Rangers organization after spending time there.

"He has been an instrumental reason for the success the Pirates organization has had over the course of his tenure with the ballclub," Hurdle said. "Jeff has put forth as much sweat-equity and hard work into the game of baseball as any man I have had the privilege of working with."

The Rangers spoke to between 15 to 20 people about Banister. On Wednesday night, they made their decision final.

"I never met Jeff before the interview process," Daniels said. "In the vetting process, the background work, heard a lot about his work in a player development standpoint, heard a lot about obviously with his background in doing a lot of things in the organization, you know he's going to value the minor league scouting and the grassroots element of it."

A Letter from Andrew Friedman to DRaysBay

As thought leaders for Rays nation and some of the most passionate and well-informed fans in all of baseball, DRaysbay is an appropriate place for me to post my thoughts as I depart from the Rays. Thank you for caring as much as you do, and thank you for some of the ideas which I may or may not have taken from you over the years.

This is both a happy and sad day for me. I leave the Tampa Bay area with incredible memories and life-long friendships from my ten years here. My experience was far beyond what I could ever have imagined. This region and this organization will always be a very special place to me and my family. I owe so much to so many, from the incredible, loyal Rays fans to the remarkable team we assembled in baseball operations, to Joe Maddon, to the coaches, clubhouse staff and players. Most importantly, I thank Stu Sternberg, his ownership team and Matt Silverman for their incredible faith in and support of me every moment of every day. They gave me the chance to lead a baseball department, and for that I will be eternally grateful. With their leadership and direction, we were able to create together an unbelievable culture that no doubt will continue. This organization is loaded with talent from ownership to players and everyone between. I am absolutely confident that the success we have achieved over the years will continue into the future. I am very excited about the next chapter in my life, and the experiences that I enjoyed here will help guide me as I embark on my next journey.

Kinda loaded with incredibles.......I don't know if I would ever describe Ray fans as incredible, loyal. They have been able to watch great baseball for many years under Maddon but fail to come to the park in sufficient numbers. Too busy with their fantasy college football leagues.

But a very classy gesture on Friedman's part.

Exactly, Miles. They have a terrible fan base.

My friend moved down there in the mid 90s. He became a full fledged Rays fans when they were still the Devil Rays. I guess he needed his baseball fix and by then he'd had kids who he wanted to get interested in baseball. I guess it happens.

Most of the die hard Rays fans are transplants from Michigan, Illinois, NY, etc.....
Floridians get geeked up for college football and NASCAR.

I went down there in the winter of '99 (December, around the holidays). The Buccaneers were an overachieving team who played very well that season if I remember it correctly because when I was down there I was shocked at how little play they got on the radio. It was all about the Hurricanes and Seminoles. That was it. Even on the damn plane ride people were ranting about that!

I can't get interested in college ball at all. Major league baseball, the NFL (and the NHL to a degree) is enough for me

I think there's a hardcore base; they're just small. Kind of like the Royals of 1-2 years ago.

Really interesting what he said about stealing their ideas from there. I doubt Terry Ryan even knows that TwinkieTown (the Twins' sister site) exists.

I am quite sure the hard core base of fans for KC would be larger than the hard core base of Tampa fans if Tampa now goes 29 years before getting into the playoffs again.
