Free agent closer David Robertson is looking to at least match, and likely top, a contract in the range of four years and $50MM, ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand reports. This is, of course, so-called “Papelbon money,”

Which is $$$ that turns you into an insufferable jerk.

I think Papelbon was an insufferable jerk long before he signed a big money contract.

He strikes me as someone who was a jerk right after he came out of the womb.

And maybe if we can mobilize and pass a fertilized egg as a person law, we can move Pap as a jerk as a fertilized egg.

Great debate about .... MadBum or Kershaw ... Who ya want?
Sixteen GMs polled
12 took Kershaw
2 took MadBum
2 wimped out and wouldn't decide.

I side with the 2 MadBum admirers.

Ditto. Kershaw sure choked in the post season.

I think as a Twins fan I'd be pretty damn happy with either one.

VMart stays in Detroit, some trade protection in the deal

4:06pm: Victor Martinez was reportedly the Tigers’ top priority this offseason, and the team characteristically struck quickly, reportedly agreeing to a new four-year deal that will guarantee the Octagon client $68MM to reprise his role as the club’s primary DH.

The Tigers' payroll is just nuts. It's like Dombrowski is just trying to sign everyone he can at whatever money necessary before the old man dies.

I still think the Mets are crazy to give up the #15 overall pick for Cuddy at this point, but maybe they're not crazy to act quickly. If the rumors are true, there is going to be a TON of money thrown around this offseason and/or trades made because of the lack of offensive options on the market. Think how shallow this pool becomes quick:

Hanley Ramirez
Pablo Sandoval: Red Sox or Giants, Red Sox supposedly "all in"
Melky Cabrera
Russell Martin
Nelson Cruz: O's will do everything they can to bring him back
Yasmany Tomas; Phillies if they can work out other deals. Ed's right; crazy money probably.
Chase Headley: Would be shocking if not the Yankees
Colby Rasmus
Jed Lowrie
Asdrubal Cabrera
Nick Markakis
Adam Laroche
Mike Morse
Alex Rios
Torii Hunter
Nori Aoki
Billy Butler
Stephen Drew
Emilio Bonifacio
Jung-ho Kang

Those guys are the BEST position players on the market this year. Given that lack of talent, the Twins should at least be exploring trading away some of our offensive (especially OF) depth.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2014/11/12/official-taveras-was-drunk-during-fatal-crash/18937679/

Not official

But

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals rookie outfielder Oscar Taveras was drunk at the time of his fatal car crash last month in his Caribbean homeland, an official in the Dominican Republic said Wednesday.

Tessie Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Dominican attorney general's office, told The Associated Press toxicology reports showed Taveras had a blood-alcohol level five times the country's legal limit when he lost control of his car Oct. 26 on a highway in the tourist region of Puerto Plata.

Was just about to post this. I think most of us suspected this was the case all along, especially with the Cardinals' long, dark history of alcohol issues in their clubhouse. A great organization on the field, but they sure have had some ugly skeletons off it wrt this kind of thing.

People, I like to drink too. But this is just not worth it. Your car is a 2-3,000 pound weapon. Treat it as such. Another 2 young lives snuffed out for no good reason.

When you drink, don't drive.

Seems simple enough.

Agreed
This just doesn't need to happen, esp people with money.

Yep. It's not a difficult concept. Same with texting and driving, which in some ways is worse.

Until it becomes a social norm, like seat belts, to say that no, we aren't going to tolerate this any more, it won't change.

Sad.

Texting and driving is much worse.

http://distracteddriveraccidents.com/texting-driving-dangerous-drunk-driving/

But there isn't a group called MADD going against texting and driving.

They should but don't.

Drinking and driving is down significantly in this country, due in large part to MADD's efforts.

But distracted driving is now up and continues to rise.

A couple of years ago, we had a measure defeated in the state legislature defeated to ban texting and driving.....despite overwhelming support from all law enforcement agencies.

Some stupid legislator from Sioux Falls...I won't say the political party he was a member.....said he voted against the measure because our civil liberties are already too threatened.

Driving is apparently a civil liberty protected by the constitution and the Bill of Rights according to this lame brain legislator.

Gleeman:
Remember this when Salvador Perez is worn down next year: http://bit.ly/1yCCBUJ

This is so predictable from someone like Gleeman. Make a call that Perez will break down because of overuse. That way even if he plays slightly fewer than 158 games next season, he can say "Hey! See! I told ya!"

I mean, come on. He's a catcher. He'll have years where he plays fewer games than normal. Big deal. Easy time to call a "downturn" after he set a record for most games caught.

I don't recall everyone being concerned with catchers in the 1970s and 1980s breaking down because they caught over 130 games. If they were the best catcher and a star catcher, they should be catching at least 130 games per season. And just because they may have a year or two when they struggle with injuries, it's not necessarily (and most like is NOT) because of the prior year's workload. It's a cop-out.

I disagree, Matt. Workload matters, just like it does for pitchers. They're just discovering more about it now than they knew in the 60's/70's.

And yep, Miles. That's actually a lot of my office focus is on distracted driving campaigns with high schools/high school sports around the country. People either don't fully realize how dangerous it is, or more likely based on the statistics, they don't care. We're all addicted to our cell phones and "immediate" access to information.

In the time it took me to write this post, there were probably 10 distracted driving-related crashes in the US.

Now I don't know what their legal limit is, but 5X still has to be close to alcohol poisoning also.

Yep........I had thought the same thing when I read five times. If our legal limit is now 0.08, that is a blood alcohol level of 0.4. Certainly close to being dead.

> 0.5, possibly death.
