I was thinking the Twins could trade for Billy Butler now that the A's have acquired Ike Davis. Butler probably had no interest in signing with the Twins this offseason. But Beane is free to trade him to the Twins, as far as I know.

We hava a DH named Vargas. and another guy that probably should DH named Arcia. Both together are cheaper and have higher upside than Butler.

What possible need could we have for Butler?

Platoon with Mauer.

Yup. Or move Mauer to the OF. Butler could handle 1B and share time at DH with Vargas. Maybe we could include Mauer in the trade if we take on some of his salary? Lots of options.

Um Butler is a mess Defensively.

DH is his position for a reason.

Mauer isn't going anywhere if he doesn't want to...and why would he? the coachnig staff gave him a pass all the time. His home town. Media doesn't criticize...

Mauer can veto any trade.

Dump Mauer for Butler...sounds brilliant.

Oops. Forgot about Mauer's no-trade. But maybe he'd be willing to go to a team like the A's? Definitely a better chance at a championship out there.

I said this a couple years ago and was proven somewhat wrong ,....
But I'm saying it again now, in total confidence ....
Billy Butler is toast.

Another one goes by the boards that could have been affordable

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas have agreed to a six-year contract worth $68.5 million, a source confirmed to ESPN's Jim Bowden.

The agreement was first reported Wednesday by MLB.com, which also reported that the deal includes an opt-out clause after four years.

Royals doing some holiday shopping

The Marlins have acquired right-hander Aaron Crow from the Royals in exchange for left-hander Brian Flynn, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).

The Royals announced that they have re-signed right-hander Jason Frasor to a one-year deal with a mutual option for the 2016 season. Frasor, a client of agent Dave Meier, reportedly receives a $1.25MM base in 2015 with a $2MM option that contains a $550K buyout. That makes for a $1.8MM guarantee, and the deal also calls for as much as $500K of incentives in each season.

I guess he is "selling high" on Donaldson.

I don't get that one, either. It made some sense to deal Donaldson I guess because this market is so weak and so many teams are desperate for 3b (ahem...Plouffe is a stud...ahem). But man, I thought he'd get more. Donaldson is arguably a top 10 player in the sport right now. Very underappreciated.

I'm curious what he's going to get in deals for Smardz and Kazmir.

The guy might be good, but please do no refer to Plouffe as a stud.

Studs don't have consideration of replacement when an untested rookie is waiting in the wings.

Plouffe is good. I like him a lot and have no problem with him on my team....but he's no stud.

Stud is a term that should be reserved for the absolute best. Trout, is a stud. Kershaw, stud. Caberra...well you get the picture. Plouffe is a good Major Leaguer. he's not elevated to the level of Trout, Kershaw etc yet.

Ouch

9:59am: Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports that the Orioles were told Cruz had a four-year, $58MM offer on the table (Twitter link), so it appears that those are the likely terms of this deal.

9:55am: The Mariners have agreed to a multi-year deal with Nelson Cruz, reports Dominican journalist Yancen Pujols (Spanish link). According to Pujols, it’s a four-year, $57MM contract. ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick hears that the deal is still pending a physical (Twitter link). Cruz is represented by agent Diego Bentz of Relativity Sports.

Former PED user plays in two bandboxes in his career and now he gets a great deal to play in a Pitcher's paradies.

Seattle's at least trying to compete...but I just don't see them being very smart about it.

Earlier today, news broke that the Mariners and Nelson Cruz had agreed to a four-year deal. While some assumed that he would serve in an outfield capacity, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the M’s prefer to use Cruz in a DH role and will still seek a right fielder from outside the organization. According to Dutton, two possibilities are free agents Torii Hunter and Alex Rios.

It's not about defense. Seattle is not a hitters park. Unless you're a singles kind of hitter like Ichiro. Power numbers tend to drop there (unless you love doubles...)

That contract will likely not end well at all. But this market is so thin, all of these contracts are going to be like this.

Baseball is flush with cash and FA gets weaker every year because teams are increasingly locking up their own players. So we're going to continue to see deals like this until the players' start getting their fair shares of revenues.

•The Pirates announced that they have signed outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, catcher Sebastian Valle and third baseman Deibinson Romero to minor league deals with Spring Training invites. Hernandez, 27, saw big league action with the Bucs back in 2012 and spent parts of four seasons in their minor league system. He’s a .272/.340/.367 hitter at the Triple-A level. Valle, 24, was formerly one of the Phillies’ top prospects per Baseball America, but his bat never caught up to his glove. He’s a lifetime .234/.265/.384 hitter at Double-A and has minimal Triple-A experience. Romero, 28, has spent his career with the Twins but never reached the bigs. He has a .266/.366/.412 line in two seasons at Triple-A.

I like Law's take on the Cruz deal. 1) He'll likely be productive in 2015 but the length of the deal is awful. 2) That it makes the Tomas deal look good. The Mariners would have done better to just sign him.

I think Seattle would be an excellent trade partner for us. They desperately need offense (and at our positions; mainly OF) and we need pitching.

Look for Romero to break into the bigs and do ok. Another guy MN for some reason didn't push.

So what awesome OF will they trade.

Arcia?

The rest have minimal trade value.

I love Arcia (as you know) but yes, I'd strongly consider it. He's got decent trade value one would think and he's a major defensive liability with no other position (1b/DH).

This is where Mauer at first base kills opportunities. Arcia could move to DH and they could actually try to make a deal for another guy.

But no, Mauer is muddling up the whole deal.

Great athlete? Then play him somewhere beside first base!

I'm with ya, but I'm not sure that would even solve the problem re: Arcia, because then you'd be forced to play Vargas at 1b, which is also a bad idea IMO. Arcia likely needs to go.
