This is a version of bait & switch by the A's.

OMG Matt. You cannot be serious. How did they "bait" him. And how much money does he need to live on? He has all the money he could possibly ever need unless he is a total fool and somehow spent it.

I had a feeling this question would be asked. Here's how it likely went down.

A's: Coco, you're a good player. A GREAT player. Probably a HOF player. But you have trouble staying healthy. We're offering you a nice contract, but not as nice as if we could trust your health. You will need to play 130 games in 2016 for us to give you a 2017 contract.

Coco: That sounds fair. I will try my damndest to stay healthy and play 130 games, but if I get hurt again, this is fair.

Fact is, he is healthy, which was the A's primary concern (rightly so). He would easily pass 129 games played this season if they weren't manipulating his playing time. Considering other guys are getting PH and PR opportunities on his bench days, and the manager usually utilizes his bench, he is clearly getting a raw deal.

Ummm, I am quite certain Coco Crisp was represented by an agent. His agent is responsible for negotiating the best possible contract that he could reasonably expect to enter into. And agents generally work on a commission basis so his agent wasn't negotiating on only Coco's behalf.

Yankees righty Nathan Eovaldi is set to undergo surgery to repair both a torn flexor tendon and a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, ESPN New York’s Wallace Mathews was among those to report (Twitter links). The pair of procedures will prevent him from pitching in 2017.

The news could well spell the end of Eovaldi’s tenure with the Yankees. He is entering his final season of arbitration eligibility, and will surely command at least some kind of a raise on his current $5.6MM salary. Unless New York looks to work out some kind of multi-year arrangement, then, Eovaldi will likely be non-tendered this fall.

The Cardinals are sending two significant players in for surgical procedures, as ESPN.com’s Mark Saxon reports (Twitter links). Outfielder Matt Holliday needs to go under the knife to repair his recently fractured thumb, while reliever Seth Maness requires Tommy John surgery for his elbow injury.

At 26 years and 102 days old, Altuve is the ninth-youngest in Major League history to reach 1,000 hits, older than only Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, Alex Rodriguez, Robin Yount, Hank Aaron, Tris Speaker, George Brett and Derek Jeter. All of those players are members of the 3,000-hit club.

For context, Altuve reached 1,000 hits in 45 fewer games than Pete Rose, who ultimately finished his career with 4,256. Altuve also reached the milestone in 103 fewer games than the second-fastest in Astros history, Cesar Cedeno, who notched his 1,000th hit in 889 games.

Wasn't he a guy who pitched twice this season vs. the Twins and struggled both times? That should tell you something.

Didn't Altuve bat something close to .700 vs. the Twins this year? I know it was absurd. It was the reverse of what you would normally expect.

Love that the oft-scorned and misunderstood Philly fans are showing Utley they appreciate him. He deserves it. Looks like Utley will get playoff games too.

The Dodgers received mixed news on two key starting pitching injury situations today, as Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times was among those to report (links to Twitter). While Clayton Kershaw is making some positive progress, per manager Dave Roberts, fellow southpaw Hyun-jin Ryu is likely done for the year.

Kershaw, who led the N.L. in ERA in four of the last five years and is doing so again this season, is ready for a bullpen session on Saturday.

Billy Butler missed the Athletics’ last two games due to injuries suffered in a clubhouse altercation with teammate Danny Valencia on Friday night, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. A’s manager Bob Melvin said Butler was absent due to nausea and vomiting, and neither Melvin or Valencia was willing to comment about the alleged incident. As Slusser writes, “no one in the Oakland clubhouse would discuss the matter on the record, but no one denied that it occurred, either.”

In an update to her original story, Slusser reports that the dispute between Butler and Valencia stemmed from Butler informing “an equipment representative that Valencia had not, in fact, been wearing the spikes that Valencia had told the representative that he was using.”
