Watched the MLB Jackie Robinson letters. Dude was all class.

Then watched the panel of African American players. six of them talking to Harold.

They brought up some real valid reasons why inner city ball is dying.

- MONEY - Equipment costs. More so, traveling team costs.
-TRAVELING TEAMS/SCOUTING: Apparently it's now more prevalent that scouts are going to showcases to see guys. McCutcheon said that he had folks raise $ to send him to one in Puerto Rico.....at age ELEVEN

That's ridiculous. All of that crap is.

- Lack of Black scouts/front office personnel - Adam Jones was spot on. "What I see" in the front office and scouts: White people.

Baseball is tough to master. Those unable to get noticed or afford it, do something else. No surprise.

But I gotta say, Aaron Hicks has been the straw that stirs the drink over there this season.

Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star outfielder Starling Marte has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for Nandrolone, a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball announced. Marte will begin serving the suspension immediately.

The 28-year-old has been a mainstay in the Pirates’ lineup since 2013. He posted his best offensive season last year, hitting .311/.362/.456, with nine home runs. That performance earned him his first trip to the All-Star game.

Was about to bury him, but a great apology.
If he truly means what he released, then good on him.

Marte released the following statement (hat tip to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports) to fans and media:

“I have been informed that I have tested positive in one of the tests that are regularly done in my job. In this very difficult moment I apologize to my family, the Pittsburgh Pirates, my teammates, my fans, and baseball in general. Neglect and lack of knowledge have led me to this mistake with the high price to pay of being away from the field that I enjoy and love so much. With much embarrassment and helplessness, I ask for forgiveness for unintentionally disrespecting so many people who have trusted in my work and have supported me so much. I promise to learn the lesson that this ordeal has left me. God bless you.”

That looked like Olivia's softball team.

Monday night, JV game, 5 unearned runs off her.

SIX dropped popups on a non-windy evening. unreal

Came in last night, ground ball...error on throw, runner to 3rd, runner on first.

Next pitch, catcher airmails it into LF on a pickoff attempt. LF stands and watches..kid who has barely played EVER. both score before the ball even gets to the cut off.

Olivia got pissed. Struck the next 6 batters out.

Ok, this is somewhat unbiased....but some of you who know me will understand I'm not bragging.

Her softball team is young. 1 jr pitcher, 2 fr pitchers, 1 soph pitcher who cries when told to pitch(only out because parents make her)...and Olivia, an 8th grader.

On the JV team(as they're now referred), she is the best softball player. By a decent margin. Hadn't played SS at all in pre-season. First game she plays 2nd, and the SS was horrid.
So she's played flawless SS since, when not pitching. One of the other pitchers plays SS when Olivia pitches. Can't field a ball to save her soul.

all these dropped popups, and it's not just the JV. Unreal.
I know they're sticking with veterans at this point. May change yet this year. But she's probably top 5 if she played varsity.

Trying to not get some egos dented. They're denting them w/incompetent play enough on their own.

Yesterday they scratched out 3 hits. Olivia had a walk/double/single in her first 3 at bats in the JV game. And she's just getting her hitting together.

Came in after pitching Monday, because the coach was tired of ball 4, ball 8, ball 12 from the other kid. Said in the meeting at the mound, "I want to get some innings in tonight, so Olivia is pitching."

Ouch.

Yah, they're not world beaters. At some point, I hope they decide to cut the cord with a couple of the dead weight.

Olivia in her typical low key approach, "I hope I'm doing enough to earn varsity playing time NEXT YEAR."

Got put on the "list of reserves" for the game last night first time. They dress them all, and coach adds 2 or 3 for the varsity game, if needed.

She was proud of that accomplishment. Some of the HS girls are showing her how not to act. Thankfully, she's figuring that out on her own.

Fundamentals. Too many kids catch 1 handed. Too many are allowed to, simply because the kids behind them are worse.

I have to behave at games now. Monday i threw out a "catch the ___ ______ ball" after the 5th dropped popup. Apparently it was loud enough that I got an elbow in the ribs.

Nope. Year to year.

One of my summer buddies I've told you about has driven off 10 varsity kids in another town. Didn't even go out this year. yet no one sees it as a big deal.

Their best player?

you got it.

His daughter.

At least she is now. There's no one else left.
