Bad news for the Twins and other AL Central teams:

The Indians have signed Carlos Carrasco to an extension.

The deal will pay him the same $9.75 million his 2019 option had paid, will increase his now-torn-up 2020 option to $10.25 from $9.5 million and will pay him $12 million in both 2021 and 2022. The option for 2023 is worth $14 million and comes with a $3 million buyout.

Even with the new contract, Carrasco remains one of the biggest bargains in baseball following another excellent season for the Tribe. He went 17-10 with a 3.38 ERA and 231/43 K/BB ratio in 192 innings.

It's only bad news until you realize they are now going to push hard to get Trevor Bauer traded.

And then realize trading Bauer or Kluber will stockpile their farm system for the next 10 years.

Harold Baines and Lee Smith have been elected to the HOF. I'm happy with Baines, always one of my favorite players. Lee Smith, I feel was overrated, but I get it. Overall I'd say it's still a great day for baseball.

LAS VEGAS -- Lee Smith was perhaps the most feared reliever of his generation and helped define the closer's role in the modern game during 18 seasons in the Majors. Harold Baines was far different, stoic and shy, a craftsman who produced 2,866 hits with one of the sweetest swings of his day.

These two very different men will be forever linked after learning on Sunday that they'll be members of the Baseball Hall of Fame induction class of 2019.

Smith and Baines were selected by the Today's Game Era Committee, a 16-member panel appointed by the Hall of Fame to review players retired for at least 15 seasons who were passed over by the Baseball Writers' Association of America as well as managers, umpires and executives.

Smith was a unanimous selection, while Baines got 12 of 16 votes to clear the 75 percent threshold for induction. Meanwhile, Lou Piniella, who managed five teams to 1,835 wins, the 16th most in history, fell one vote short with 11. Seven finalists received fewer than five votes.

Relievers just do not impress me. Think of how many more games Baines actually had a REAL impact on the win.

Good Closers shut down comeback attempts.

I have a real problem with players that spend most of their careers as DHs and numbers barely make them look close.

Baines was certainly good, but I wouldn't go so far as HOF good.

You don't have to be that good a pitcher to be a good closer. Enter a game with the bases empty and a 1 to 3 run lead and hold that lead for one inning. I really don't care either way it any more. The Hall of Fame has become the Hall of a lot of guys who had good careers. A ball player doesn't have to be truly elite to be a hall of fame player.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded pitcher Ivan Nova to the Chicago White Sox.

Pittsburgh receives right-handed pitcher Yordi Rosario and international slot money from Chicago.

Nova, 31, went 9-9 with a 4.19 ERA in 29 starts with Pittsburgh last season. He is 78-64 with a 4.26 ERA over parts of nine combined seasons with the Pirates and New York Yankees.

Rosario, 19, had a 2.57 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 14 appearances (11 starts) in 2018 between the Dominican summer league and Arizona fall league.

The Blue Jays announced today that they have released veteran shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. The Toronto organization will remain obligated to pay him the remaining $38MM in guaranteed money on his contract (including a buyout of a 2021 option).

Tulowitzki, 34, missed all of the 2018 season due to bone spurs in both heels. He had been sidelined for a long stretch of 2017 as well, all while enduring an offensive decline, making for quite an uncertain future for the former superstar.

Still, it’s surprising that the Jays ended up moving on in this fashion. With two more guaranteed seasons on his contract, Tulowitzki could have been given a shot to work back to health and perhaps build up some trade value. Evidently that was not seen as a workable solution by the organization, which is transitioning to what it hopes will be a new core.

Teams that wish to take a shot on a rebound can now employ Tulowitzki for the league minimum salary for the next two campaigns, with the Jays footing the remainder of the bill. He’ll surely be guided by the chance at playing time, among other considerations, though even with that appealing contract situation it remains to be seen whether any MLB clubs will consider Tulo a reasonable candidate for semi-regular time (and, if so, whether he’ll still be seen as a shortstop).

SO let's see, Broken down has been that can be had for two years at league minimum....Sounds like a Future Minnesota Twin to me.

What a poor acquisition he was for Toronto. He went Brian Dozier on the Jays.

The Seattle Mariners have acquired slugger Edwin Encarnacion from Cleveland, sending Carlos Santana back to the Indians as part of a three-team trade that also includes the Tampa Bay Rays, it was announced Thursday.

The Indians will receive first baseman Jake Bauers from the Rays, while Tampa Bay will get third baseman Yandy Diaz from Cleveland. The Indians also are sending minor league pitcher Cole Sulser to the Rays and the 77th pick in the 2019 competitive balance draft to the Mariners.

The Mariners also receive cash considerations from the Rays.

Weird. The Mariners just acquired Carlos Santana from the Phillies on December 3rd.

The Twins are doing virtually nothing in off-season. I read about a week ago that the strategy for the upcoming season is to allow their young players, ie, Buxton and Sano to develop.

That is simply reassuring.

CJ Cron and Nelson Cruz will for sure be better than LoMo.

I say the Twins go after all of LoMo, Tulowitski, Dozier, and Danny Valencia to make up a has-been and never-was legacy IF for 2019. Find a way to get Drew Butera back in a Twins uniform as well.
