Will be interesting to see if Mariano Rivera is the first unanimous selection.

The other lock is Roy Halladay.

I also predict Edgar Martinez and Mike Mussina sneak in today. Both good selections.

Look for Larry Walker to take a big jump up. He may get in next year.

Bonds and Clemens will inch up slightly. My guess is they will both get in on their last year on the ballot, whenever that is. 3 years or so?

Hoping Lance Berkman doesn't fall below 5%. It would be like when Kenny Lofton fell off. These are guys that should get more consideration. It would be like if Bert fell off the ballot too soon. Glad that didn't happen and we had more time to evaluate his career.

Good stuff Matt
Don't disagree on any really.
Hoping Mariano cruises in too.

Thanks for calling me out. I deserved it. I kind of gave up on the HOF discussion stuff this year until now because of crabby old asses like Sweeney that don't give a shit.

Kind of sad to see this is Fred McGriff's last year on the ballot. He's certainly more deserving than Harold Baines, and I suspect he will have a good chance of getting in through a future veterans committee.

This is very true. It used to be a testament to the greatness of each individual player. Some of the stats were almost unbelievable especially compared to what is considered to be well above average in today's ML game. IMO, they need to create a post-2000 HOF that inducts players that started their careers after 1990. There really is no barometer that can compare players from different eras of the game.

Rivera will go in. but not unanimously. Some asshat writer will pass him over for that very reason alone. And I'm sure there is a writer or two that feels the same about relief pitchers as a few people in here do.

So it wont be unanimous.

Rivera is about the only pitcher other than Halliday that is a modern-day HOF quality pitcher.

Mariano got what he deserved
one of the most dominating athletes of my lifetime.
That type of consistent perfection deserved the honor he was just paid last night.

It just floors me that a relief pitcher is the first person ever to get in with 100% of the votes.

Not Nolan Ryan, Not Randy Johnson, Not Ken Griffey Jr, Not Babe Ruth, Not Hank Aaron, Not Willy Mays, Not Ricky Henderson,

etc etc etc etc etc etc

I Just don't get the voters.

Absolutely! He is the true unanimous first ballot HOF. What Dustin hopes Joe Mauer will become.

Wow! I didn't realize that no player had ever been unanimous before. That is truly amazing and makes ZERO sense.

One could argue that he was without question the most dominant at his position.

There were morons who used to not vote for guys for specifically that reason that NO ONE should go in unanimously. Also there were writers who wouldn't vote for anyone on the ballot for the first time. Apparently they've finally purged the dumbasses that did that shit.

Now they have dumbasses that elect the Mike Mussina's of the world to be in the HOF.

Mike Mussina should NOT be in the HOF. He was a very good pitcher in his tenure but simply not HOF caliber. If they vote him in, how could Tony Oliva NOT be voted in?

Pitcher A: Career ERA 3.45, IP 4,530, 180 complete games, 16 Gold Gloves

Pitcher B: Career ERA 3.68, IP 3,562, 57 complete games, 7 Gold Gloves

Which one is more deserving of the Hall of Fame?

You are correct sir! I can only imagine how far the baseball writers will have to continue to lower the bar to admit more current generations of pitchers.

It's like I said, the HOF is no longer for players who were truly elite. Just pretty good for a fair number of years. Selections like Mussina just water down the HOF.

Yeah, let's compare number-by-number a pitcher from the dead ball era to a pitcher that pitched his entire career in the AL East during the height of the steroid era. Very poor comparison. It shows me nothing.

That's because you're ignorant. The "dead ball era" was 1900 to 1919.
