Diamondbacks find a new, painful way to lose after walking 5 straight in the bottom of the 9th

Some say that there’s nothing new under the sun, but the Arizona Diamondbacks proved that old adage wrong on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, they proved it wrong by finding a new and extremely painful way to lose a baseball game.

The Diamondbacks were leading the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth at Dodger Stadium. Closer Greg Holland had gotten two quick outs, and needed just one more to sew up a win. They were so, so close, but that’s when everything came apart. Because Holland and reliever T.J. McFarland combined to walk five straight Dodgers batters.

It seemed like a little blip at first. After those two outs, Holland walked Chris Taylor on six pitches. But then Holland walked Russell Martin on seven pitches. Walking two with a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth is not what you want your closer to be doing, so it was time for a mound visit.

It didn’t do much good, because Holland then walked Alex Verdugo. Now the bases were loaded and the Diamondbacks’ lead was hanging by its fingertips, but they didn’t pull Holland. He needed just one more out. He couldn’t possibly walk a fourth straight batter, could he?

He could, and he did. He walked in a run, which tied the game 4-4. The Diamondbacks finally pulled Holland and put McFarland on the mound to try and send the game to extra innings. McFarland needed just one out, and to not walk the next batter he faced.

So what did he do? He walked Cody Bellinger to score the winning run. The Dodgers, who were a single out from defeat, won 5-4 on five straight walks.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, a game hasn’t ended on five straight walks with no outs between those walks in the entire live-ball era, which began in 1920.

This is an amazing stat and one that you would think may have happened a dozen times or so.

Atlantic league all star game used robot balls/strikes

The league apparently has also started implementing

Stealing FIRST base

They have an agreement with MLB to experiment.

The game is starting to jump the shark. Why would sluggers these days even try to steal first? They are swinging for the fences.

Can you explain to me what stealing first base is? Never heard of that.

I looked it up. Doing stuff like this essentially alters the game. The NFL has messed around so much with various rules on blocking, what is or isn't a catch, contact with the QB, kickoffs and touchbacks, what constitutes a fumble, down by contact, "'making a football move", etc. that the game cannot possibly be compared to that of previous decades and eras. Therefore, if you start messing around with rules including replays, contact at home plate, electronic strike zone, stealing first base, etc. how can statistical records from prior seasons be compared to those of current seasons? Further, if the baseball is juiced, all HR achievements in this era should be asterisk no different than those from the steroid era.

Pretty amazing night for the Angels

Honoring Skaggs. All the jerseys on the mound. Mom throws the first pitch the way it's supposed to. Trout drives in six. Combo no hitter.

OnThursday night, I watched the Rangers shut out the Astros 5 to 0. Lance Lynn was the pitcher for the Rangers. I swear he is 50 lbs heavier than when he pitched for the Twins and you would at that time, never confuse Lynn for Tim Tem Lincecum in terms of body shapes. He looks heavier than David Wells and a young CC Sabbathia (combined). Yet he was hitting 98 on the radar.

Last night, Santana hit his 10th homer on the season with a projected 18 for the Rangers. It brought the score to 8 to 4 with the Astros in the lead. Rangers ended up beating the Astros 9 to 8. In 65 games, 218 at bats, Danny has 10 homers. For his career, in 429 games, 1313 at bats, he has 23 homeruns.

Wonder if the Astros are having trouble playing with two hands around their neck.

(That was the G Man's line in the mid 1980's. Twins were having a very good season (not the 87 team). They go into Cleveland and have a 9 run after 6 or 7 innings, only to see the lead disappear and Twins lost the game. From that game on, they went downhill for the season.

The G man had a crucial throwing error that helped start Cleveland's rally. In an article in SI, Gaetti was asked about the error....he said it was very difficult to throw to first base with both hands around your neck.

I loved that 87 team.

Again....how long had he gone between arrests until now.

I think Strawberry is still clean.

Too amazing young talents who saw their careers unfulfilled because of substance abuse.

A batter has stolen first base for the first team in baseball history.

Yes, you read that right. On Saturday, an Atlantic League batter stole first base, marking the first time the feat has ever been accomplished.

During the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs’ game against the Lancaster Barnstormers, Tony Thomas became the first player to ever steal first.

Per the Washington Post, this is how stealing first base works.

Any pitch on any count not caught in flight will be considered a live ball, and a batter may run to first base, similar to a dropped third strike.

So, when Alejandro Chacin’s 0-1 pitch went to the backstop it became a live ball giving Thomas the opportunity to dash to first base. Under normal circumstances, the count would be 1-1. Instead, Thomas was ruled safe at first with no outs.

Thomas would end up coming around to give the Blue Crabs its first run of the game. Per the official scoring sheet, Thomas’ steal of first is recorded as a fielder’s choice because of the ability for the catcher to make a throw.

They might as well start having foul ball HR and special targets in the OF that if hit by a ball result in an automatic HR. This is going beyond silly.

This will really prevent minor league pitchers from trying to throw pitches in the dirt for the K.

Our problem isn't the everyday guys....need pitching. You have Ehire, Arreaz, Sano, and Gonzalez. Ehire, Arreaz, and Gonzalez can play any position....which one is worse than Nunez?
