For all of the drama and angst about Spielman's obsessive trading back, it's definitely possible that this is the year to do just that. It's also possible that staying at 14 and creating possibilities by filling holes (gaping and otherwise) will allow us to get a top 5-10 player at 14, or even earlier with a slight trade-up. Having no viable starters at a given position is how you end up with Troy Williamson or Garrett Bradbury (whom I wanted because we lacked an IOL starter) when better players are available...not to mention better players at their positions being taken much later.

Don't go into the draft with positions so bereft that there is no choice but to take a given player/position.

I agree with the bolded but none of it applies to the Vikings this year. Even if we were flush with cap room, it is next to impossible to sign say three good UFAs to fill the biggest needs on the roster. Too many other teams shell out big $$ and players have their own preferences about where to sign. Players go on visits and don't even get to Minnesota. This year of course is even worse as we will have to cut players, which may create dead cap. More positions to fill, less real cap to do it with.

The problem with free agency this year as it relates to the draft is we could conceivably sign what are likely marginal players to fill several needs at G, G, DT, S, maybe DE and even CB. Because all we can afford are marginal FAs, we are essentially back to square one by the time the draft rolls around.

In short, with no 2nd round pick, several clear needs, high dollar contracts, and no cap, Spielman has run this team into the ground. All he has left is a menu of traditionally bad options which may help in the short term but will continue to mortgage the future.

i look at things this way; these next couple of seasons represent our near-term shot at a Superbowl...all we need is for our injured players from 2020 to return, and a couple of average guards, an average safety, and a few other pieces....

sign these inexpensive players that thrived in zimmer's system as role players:
griffen
weatherly
kearse
sendejo

our present dt's are not that bad:
pierce
watts
james lynch
1st round pick

in a couple of years, we're going to have to blow up the team and start over, but over the next couple of years, we have a chance to make some noise...let's just do that....

Sounds like the 7th seed and one and done in the playoffs

We’ll have to wait and see on Pierce, he could be the next Fat Pat or just a guy, however he’s definitely going to be better against the run then anyone we had last year.
None of our other interior DLineman should be counted on for anything.
If you can take Christian Barmore that is definitely the direction I’d go. We might want to cover ourselves and investigate what the price would be for Jurrell Casey, or another cap casualty in the next few weeks.

I’d definitely have to consider Everson Griffen (Cousins/Zimmer are gonna have to get over the a** comment)
He still has more juice then anyone not named Hunter on our roster.

I’d like another shot at Kearse as well a Mid round Safety athlete.

Draft defense heavy- DLine, S, LB. OLine mixed in between earlier then later.

OLine should be the main goal in Free agency.

Could surprise if we hit on a couple gems mainly Barmore or the like.

I'm surprised Kearse didn't stick at Det.

He was very good in the big nickel role here.

Per Source: Bateman ran a 4.37 hand time and a 4.39 laser at the Exos combine.

Those sub 4.4 players are very rare. Ones with that speed plus skill end up all pros.

to say Milton Williams dominated is an understatement.

Milton Williams might work his way into my top 3 IDL (in terms of fit w/ the Vikings) https://t.co/7jB80pHFra

I'm hearing that this is a great draft for offensive line, especially for tackle.

I don't know what the plan is for Reiff. We could replace him with an absolute stud in the first round.

The problem is this is a weak draft for DT and we have no 2nd pick. It sure would be great if that could be addressed in free agency with Reiffs money.

The other problem is that we desperately need a guard more than a tackle. Reiff actually had a pretty solid year.

How about we trade Reiff for a starting Guard. Tackle is more of a need for most teams and considered a higher valued position. I would think we could find a trade partner?

You could build a brick wall around Cousins and it wouldn't matter. He'd still fall down and fumble.

Leber is really high on the offensive lineman from USC. (Vera-Tucker) He has the advantage of being position flexible. He watched the film and said that he likes him better than Sewell, who is a lock to go in the top ten.

Leber said that if he is there that the Vikings shouldn't mess around with a trade down. I'm agreeing with that right now. It feels like Barmore is a reach at #14. If we select Barmore, I want to trade back a bit first.

Report: #Steelers are "very high" on #NorthCarolina RB Javonte Williams.

(NFL Rumors on Twitter)

I watched several games with the Tar Heels last season. Williams was elite at breaking tackles. I'm not suggesting we select him, but I do believe he may be the best running back in the league in 2021.

Actually, I believe running backs are best as a rookie, so I believe he will be best in the league. I imagine that's what the Steelers believe.

It was suggested that this would be a solid pick for the Vikings in the middle of the draft. I have no idea about anyone in the middle of the draft.

My prediction is that the Vikings select Alijah Vera-Tucker.

I think that 14 is a little early for a guy projected to be a G in the NFL. He does fit the ZBS but struggles to anchor against the bull rush in pass pro.

I think our needs will become more clear in the next few weeks. Considering if we restructure Rieff and all. I also hope it becomes more clear as to what state of mind Hunter is at. If he wants out this team should be blown up immediately.

As much as the Vikings need a Guard (or 2), if I'm RS I pick DT Christian Barmore in the first round. We know he'll pick an athletic freak at DE in the 4th round (see Hunter, Wonnum) but the quickest way to make this team a contender is to create a d-line that can dominate on day one. We already have Hunter and Pierce. Add Barmore, and assuming Wonnum takes another step this year, it's possible.
