Practice has been moved indoors today with the excessive heat. Only one reporter was allowed inside who has passed the Covid protocols. I'm not sure who it was.

It's going to be hot for the next few days, so this may be a bad week for information.

Vikings still plann to go through practice today, but the roster is down around 60 players due to the presumptive positive tests and other injuries (started at 80). Minnesota was going to simulate the last 10 min of the 4th Q two times, per Zimmer, but that'll be down to 1 now.

(Courtney Cronin on Twitter)

My sense is that it's not something we should panic about, but I am always trying to be optimistic.

There's video here that shows the play that started the argument/ fight with Earl Thomas that got him kicked off the team. He messed up on the play and probably after the play.

Here are the players now in question:

Dillon Mitchell, Alexander Hollins, C.J. Ham, Eric Kendricks, Ezra Cleveland, Kenny Willekes, Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Jalyn Holmes, and Danielle Hunter absences today at Vikings camp .. the first 8 due to false Covid tests and the last due to injury #Vikings

The first one was a good play for sure, the second one the throw was so bad I could have been successful at "shutting down" that play.

It is a big question. Two of them are starters. (Ham and Kendricks). Holmes most likely would be counted on to play vs the Packers too.

Ludford has been busy writing this weekend. He's very unhappy with the offensive line.

https://www.dailynorseman.com/2020/8/23/21396769/vikings-53-man-roster-projection

Before he wrote about how he was negative about the defensive line. Then he wrote about how he was negative about Trump. (I decided not to engage with him his political posts.) I asked him if he was a stock market bear. (He's a financial advisor by trade.) He didn't respond to that. He might be negative about me now, or perhaps I planted a seed with him to lighten up a little bit.

This is some good news. I mean, we can all use some good news.

A total of 77 tests from 11 NFL teams processed by the same New Jersey lab came back positive from Saturday's COVID-19 testing, per league source.
All 77 individuals underwent an additional point of care test -- and all tested negative.

Unseating an anointed starter just isn’t a thing under zimmer. It’s a part of his coaching style that could improve.

Agreed. he seems to have his guys and keeps trotting them out there matter how bad they play.

Not sure what the love affair this team has with Elflain but the guy has been a complete liability the last 2 seasons. If there was no one worthy of replacing him with Spielman should have drafted 15 G's or at least moved some money around and picked up a servicable FA G.

Zimmer does not call the shots with regards to the OL. "Hey Kubiak, Dennison WTF! Get Elflein in there, or else!" Preposterous.

I can’t think of a single player on the entire team that ever cracked the starting lineup for a reason other than injury.

Then you need gain more clarity in your thinking. Thielen, Austin Cutting, C.J. Ham, Brian O'Neill, Ifeadi Odenigbo, Danielle Hunter all either flat out replaced the incumbent or made it possible for the Vikings to release the incumbent, or drove the incumbent into retirement.

Thielen required an injury to make the lineup same as Diggs. I posted the details on that once a while ago. Ham plays a position that we carry one player at. I’ll look into cutting. O’Neil was an anointed starter (high draft pick worked out great!). I’ll look into hunter as well. I’m not sure but didn’t we hang on to Robison too long? Maybe they don’t overlap. I’ll look more later. Caught up in an all-day wedding right now.

Thielen beat out Jarius Wright straight up initially at slot receiver. The other ones? Most people only have one asshole.

2016 season
In the second preseason game, an 18–11 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Thielen led all Vikings receivers with four catches for 61 yards. With Stefon Diggs sidelined due to a groin injury, Thielen received the starting nod in his place and had one of the best performances of his career against the Houston Texans, breaking 100 receiving yards in a game for the first time in his career as he finished the game with seven catches for 127 yards and a touchdown

This was his fourth season with the Vikes. I've posted this before. Clarity of thinking or whatever.

Preseason. LMAO.

Interesting. So in Thielen's breakout 2016 season both as a starter and as a big time player, Stephon Diggs was injured, and did not play, and was replaced by Thielen, as per your premise "I can’t think of a single player on the entire team that ever cracked the starting lineup for a reason other than injury." I must confess, that was not how I remembered it.

Read it closer. The preseason game was separate from the start he got vs Houston.

* Still have a feeling that my post draft assessment after looking at college clips, that the later pick CB Cameron Dantzler will be a better player than 1st rounder CB Jeff Gladney, will be correct.

* Hearing comments from Theilen being very impressed with Dantzler strengthens that.

* I am looking forward to a 2ndary without Rhodes and Waynes, was never real high on Waynes.

* But the new 2ndary will probably struggle as I think the Vikes will miss Griffin more than many think.

* While I think Jefferson will be a future star, Johnson will play very well, and won't give up the #2 spot for at least another year, unless Johnson is injured.

* Maybe a strange prediction, while I feel that Griffin will play well for Dallas, I have a feeling something bad will happen with him in Texas, that he will get into trouble with the law [thinking of Peterson in Texas - bar fight, and punishing his child], and that trouble could end his professional football career.

Thielen was already our starting 3rd WR beating out the healthy incumbent Jarius Wright. In fact started game 2 against the Packers. And before the game 5 start he was already our #2 WR in receptions and yards, as our starting 3rd WR. He eventually supplanted a healthy Charles Johnson as the starter outside opposite Diggs. So he was never handed Diggs job due to injury, he simply started one game due to an injury to Diggs.

If jefferson can't beat out Johnson this year he was a wasted draft pick. Bisi is a terrible #2.

Johnson was a rookie last year and we need to allow for the possibility that he will be better this season. Jefferson is still learning the offense. I have no doubt that soon enough Jefferson will start.

Ii rooting for Fehr. He's an athletic specimen. (My comment)

Wrote about the pool report from @CourtneyRCronin on today's practice. Notable takeaways:

* Yarbrough took first-team DE reps over Zettel, Wonnum
* Fehr and Lynch split reps with the starting base defense, not Nickerson Jr.
* Dan Bailey made a 53-yard FG

Agreed 100%

What's most depressing reading about camp is our lines.
if you believe winning starts up front, we have seemed to abandon that philosophy
The oline has been decent at times that last couple years, but too many weaknesses to hold up to 17 weeks of NFL caliber defenses
it's a struggle to see how this Oline is much better. This is a defining year for Bradbury, he clearly did not stack up to the hype in year 1, and his "athleticism" was not enough to make up for his lack of bulk/strength vs big lineman.
if he grades out as below average, that pick is a tough loss.

Bigger issue may be the d line though. Wow will that interior be bad, I'd expect team to gouge us up the middle and lots of play action until they can stop it.

Seems like they are focused on trying to improve the team from the outside in.

Right now, this just seems like the team that will have enough talent to beat the teams they should, but will struggle vs elite caliber team, particularly those with strong lines.

They really should have foreseen Michael Pierce opting out this season. Damn Spielman! If he would have signed a second Pro-bowl caliber NT we'd be in good shape. Can never quite figure out what that guy is thinking.

Ludford is very negative about our defensive line. I'm hoping that Johnson will be better this year having lost some weight and playing where he is a better fit. Stephen is also going to play where he is a better fit and they both won't be on the field on third downs. (I hope)

Jalyn Holmes is also moving where hopefully he is a better fit and will be a backup. I'm not so sure he will be a good third down player, though. I don't think so. I do believe Capers will help the defense get innovative on third downs. The bigger concern may be whether the defense can stop the run.

And the Dodgers are right there setting the example of what white uniforms are. Bright white.

* Maybe a strange prediction, while I feel that Griffin will play well for Dallas, I have a feeling something bad will happen with him in Texas, that he will get into trouble with the law [thinking of Peterson in Texas - bar fight, and punishing his child], and that trouble could end his professional football career.

If jefferson can't beat out Johnson this year he was a wasted draft pick. Bisi is a terrible #2.

?? He filled in very good last year after Thielen injuries.....are you still upset Mitchell prob isn't making the team?

If Bisi is what you consider a satisfactory #2 receiver Phil your standards are very low. It has nothing to do with Mitchell.

His yards are a bit low but that could be a multitude of factors but if you look at his production versus other teams #2, he stacks right there.

He only had 45 targets as a rook. If you look at his actual production though, on those looks, they are right there with the 2 Super Bowl teams #2 WR:

Bisi/Hill/Samuel

Hill and Samuel had 89 and 81 targets so roughly 2X's more than Bisi. If you double Bisi's targets and look at the numbers it's not far off (minus yards which I mentioned)

Bisi - 90 targets for 61 receptions, 588 yards and 6 TD's

Hill - 89 targets for 58 receptions, 860 yards and 7 TD's

Samuel - 81 targets for 57 receptions, 802 yards and 3 TD's

He's pretty productive but not a home run hitter.
