The Ravens called the Vikings about Yannick Ngakoue and struck a deal.

Suddenly, the competition was wide open.

For the next three weeks, Mata’afa joined this party. He hadn’t played much edge rusher, staying mostly inside. He had tried linebacker for a few OTAs his rookie year but never as a hand-in-the-dirt edge rusher. The Vikings took a liking to this and activated him for their Week 8 game in Green Bay. He wasn’t fully promoted to the roster, but instead played as one of their COVID-19 exempt activations for the game. He played outside for 26 of his 32 snaps on defense. Those snaps went well, resulting in four pressures, including this heroic one:

quote:

This was such a massive sequence in this one. 37 seconds left, Mata'afa gets pressure which forces Rodgers to throw in bounds, clock keeps moving, Packers can't get set and blow like 10 seconds and the next play is the strip sack.

The Vikings promoted Mata’afa to the proper active roster on Nov. 6, just 24 days after his initial release and the clown emoji debacle. After a position switch, a social media hurricane, a firing and a re-hiring, Mata’afa was on the Vikings once again. And this time, he was in direct competition for a starting role. On Sunday’s game against the Lions, Mata’afa rotated with Holmes and Odenigbo, taking 27 defensive snaps. On those, he logged three more pressures and a split sack with Shamar Stephen.

27 plays, three pressures and half a sack. He also seemed to me in the mix on several other plays when he was in. He appears to be very comfortable coming off the edge.

It's interesting Ngakoue has turned into a part time player with Baltimore as LBer in the 3-4
Granted they have a ton of talent in their front 7, but maybe Zimmer concluded he's just not that good.

This is what I heard from Matthew Coller. The trade is a big-time fail in the pro personnel scouting. You only make that trade if you plan to extend him at a high salary; figuring out after you've got him that he's not worth it is inexcusable.

It felt like a panic trade at the time it happened, and that's exactly what it turned out to be.

I think the emergence of Wonnum helped them decide too. A lot of the guys didn't have a normal training camp...starting to see team depth now---which is really nice. Do you think the Bears would love to have our 2nd and 3rd string RB right now?

Thoughts on the game:

Great to see the youngsters like Wonnum and Hercules improving week by week. This staff has done an amazing job developing linemen over the years.

Wilson continues to make plays at an alarming rate for Barr's tenure with the Vikes. Kendricks is there to make plays and clean up, we don't need someone like Barr who while being solid makes 2 big plays a season. You'd think Barr would be a good pass rusher but he constantly gets picked up on blitzes.

Boyd and Glandey are looking like players as well, they're not afraid to get up and support in the run game. Sure the Bears are anemic but Allen Robinson is a very good receiver and he did nothing aside from one perfect throw and catch. The play of the corners has allowed more freedom for Harry and Harry to make more plays instead of damage control. Playing the Bears offense doesn't hurt either.

Kirk with a solid game. Made some big time throws to JJ and Thielen. His pocket presence is what keeps him from being the QB we want unfortunately. But credit Kubiak on scheming to get him out of the pocket when needed. The playcall to Rudy to run out the clock was perfect.

Speaking of Rudy, he made a play! Breaking a tackle from an elite safety like Eddie Jackson.

Thielen didn't have a great game but a huge 1 handed TD and another big TD. He destroyed Skrine when he had to. But the drops really hurt, very uncharacteristic. Almost had that 3rd TD, pass could have been a bit better, his hands and body position could have been stronger, but it was also a nice play by Fuller. JJ is a stud, he understands how to play the position, his recognition where to sit in the zone is veteran like. You don't have that kind of production at LSU without that trait.

The OLine got better once Hicks went out. Hicks absolutely destroys this line every time. O'Neil got bulldozed by Mack one play, I feel like I see this everytime we play the Bears in Soldier, OLinemen getting taken off their feet.

Cook did his thing despite little room to run. Just an incredible talent, can't believe Fournette who looks like a plodder was taken 5th overall in the same draft, It would be nice if Cook could run some option routes. He either catches screens or wheel routes. Would be nice to get him isolated on LBs in coverage more often.

Three winnable games coming up, 7-5 would make things very interesting. That loss to Seattle may very well cost us, not to mention the Hail Murray. The NFC South loser will get one spot and we have to wedge our way into one of those NFC West spots. Looking at the schedule Az and the Rams looks like the most likely targets.

After racking up five pressures last night on just 20 pass rushing snaps, D.J. Wonnum now ranks first in pass rushing productivity among all rookies who have played 20% of their team's snaps

I believe the team panicked when they faced the beginning of a season without Hunter or Pierce.

I don't think Boyd gave up anything in coverage all game.

PFF charts him with giving up one ten yard catch, which was a swing pass to Patterson but it didn't look like his responsibility as he had to carry the #1 vertical.

Few thoughts on a rewatch of #MINvsCHI:

• Vikings' OL was outmatched all game, which allowed the LBs to trigger leaving nothing for Cook all game.
• Coverage was pretty sticky against some good WRs. Boyd looked good.
• Mata'afa is not without limitations but he was everywhere

Vikings are starting to run power about as much as any run concept, which is a little weird to see in a Kubiak offense but they seem to like to pull guys and put their athleticism to use. Didn't work last night but seems to be working most other weeks.

The Bears offense is not good, but Zimmer's ability to take some rookies, some 7th rounders and some street free agents and hold any offense to 3.0 yards per play, 2/11 on third down and 0/2 on fourth down is incredible.
Some really clever coverages and well-timed blitzes.

Most yards per route run
(WRs this season):

Justin Jefferson (3.3)
Davante Adams (3.2)
DeAndre Hopkins (2.9)
Julio Jones (2.8)

That kid is already a star.

(Paul Hembekides on Twitter)

If that number holds, it would be the highest mark since Steve Smith in 2008.

Bears finish with 149 yards. That's the first sub-150-yard performance since 12/2/18. It's only happened 10 times in the last decade.

#Vikings Hercules Mata'afa has had quite the reboot to his career after being moved from defensive tackle to defensive end during the bye week. He has played 85 snaps the last three games after playing just 118 snaps in one full season and six games of another.

#Vikings wide receiver snaps last night: Adam Thielen played 72 of 73. And Justin Jefferson was in for 61, Chad Beebe 22 and Bisi Johnson 2.

#Vikings rookie DE D.J. Wonnum keeps looking better and better. He was in for 28 of 50 defensive snaps last night and had a sack and three total quarterback hits.

At cornerback, #Vikings Jeff Gladney and Kris Boyd played all 50 snaps last night. Chris Jones was in for 30. Harrison Hand was in four snaps on special teams and Dylan Mabin made his Vikings debut with one snap on special teams.

As a #Vikings starting linebacker in the base defense, rookie LB Troy Dye had 20 of the 50 defensive snaps last night and 18 on special teams. LB Todd Davis only got 13 snaps on special teams. LB Hardy Nickerson had one defensive snap and 13 on special teams.

In his second NFL game last night, #Vikings TE Brandon Dillon, the "Marian Flash,'' was in for two snaps on offense. Of the 73 snaps, TE Kyle Rudolph played 57 and Tyler Conklin 46 with Irv Smith Jr. out (groin).

Justin Jefferson math update! The #Vikings rookie WR now has has 42 catches for 762 yards this season. He’s on pace to finish with 75 receptions for 1,355 yards. That would top the Minnesota rookie marks of 69 catches for 1,313 yards Randy Moss had in 1998.

#Vikings rookie WR Justin Jefferson has impressed Hall of Famer Randy Moss. He did so even more by having his fourth 100-yard receiving game as a rookie, tying Moss' team record. Jefferson caught eight passes for 135 yards in 19-13 win at Chicago.

Chris Tomasson

I had to isolate this one because it is especially interesting to me.

#Vikings running back Dalvin Cook didn't have a huge game Monday but his 96 yards on 30 carries were enough for him to regain the NFL rushing lead, 954 yards to 946 for Tennessee's Derrick Henry.

#Vikings are up to ninth in the NFL in total offense in their quest to have their first top-10 ranking since they were No. 5 in 2009.

It's been really under-discussed, but the TE position has just completely fallen off the map this season. Kittle hurt, Kelce dominant.
Only 2 other TEs have passed 400 yards on the season heading into Week 11!

That offense had it all: offensive line, dynamic running back, quarterback with a big arm and complementary receivers of Cris Carter and Jake Reed. But the sensation of Randy Moss in his rookie season is something that will never be approached around these parts, I'm afraid. (as you say)

Lowest grades:

Offense
• Cleveland: 45.4 (gave up 3 pressures, could have been more)
• Conklin: 48.6
Cook: 49.7
• O'Neill: 39.7 (4 pressures to Mack)

This is a bit baffling to me. Cook really had to earn every yard. It's not his fault there wasn't room to run yet he gets a low grade.

NFL Rookie Rankings: 10 highest-graded rookies through Week 10

1. WR JUSTIN JEFFERSON, MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Not only is Jefferson the highest-graded rookie after Week 10’s edition of Monday Night Football, but he put together a performance that firmly has him in the No. 2 spot in PFF grade at the position. He trails only Davante Adams and is three grading points above third place on the list.

We were looking forward to seeing the rookie-versus-rookie matchup between Jefferson and Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson, and it’s safe to say that the wide receiver was the one to win that battle. Jefferson caught 4-of-5 targets for 87 yards when working against Johnson on Monday night.

Jefferson may still trail Adams in PFF grade, but this week he did overtake him in our yards per route run metric. The 22nd overall pick has now come away with 3.23 yards per route run this year, leading the NFL and on pace to shatter the previous rookie record in the PFF era (2.80).

How many times did we see him get hit at the LOS or behind it, and him dragging defensive linemen 3-4 yards?

• O'Neill: 39.7 (4 pressures to Mack)

This is a bit baffling to me. Cook really had to earn every yard. It's not his fault there wasn't room to run yet he gets a low grade.

I'm guessing the fumble (even though he recovered it) and averaging 1.1 yards after contact really hurt his score.
