Spielman's so-called philosophy of paying 2-3 blue chippers = fail. Everyone gets paid like a blue chipper when it comes to resigning. Monopoly money!

Are people calling the PI bogus bc PI isn't called on a hail Mary?

Cause it clearly was interference.

To me it's a very dumb unwritten rule to not call a foul a foul.

Thanks Todd
Thought I was nuts
The problem I saw was our guy being dumb enough to start interfering at the 15, instead of at the point of conflict.

Agreed... I think all the mauling in the endzone gets ignored... but Davis rode him for about 15 yards prior...

Side note: It irked me more than is reasonable that Harrison Smith goes all Troy Williamson on that hail mary... totally misjudges the easy grab... it wouldn't even make a difference but it was like the entire team was just off making small mistakes that killed the chance of winning.

Again, glad someone else noticed ... Harry basically deflected that Hail Mary off his cup, over to a TB receiver.
Then we could have wasted time lamenting that, instead.
We are a comedy of errors at times.

Irv Smith Jr. was PFF's highest-graded tight end in the league this week (92.6 grade). Still not 100 percent healthy, he caught all four of his targets for 63 yards and a touchdown and blocked well in the running game.

No slack for Bailey!

It's not like it was close from 54.

He has to be cut and the ST's coach has to be shown the door.

There has to be 50 qualified individuals out there for ST coordinator. Does Bailey and the ST coordinator have to get injured (like every other poor performer) in order to replace them? I'd sure hope not.

Then the ball should have been spotted at the 15.

But it was an interesting strategy to mug him all the way down the field when we had 2 guys waiting for him in the EZ.

Our top rated RZ offense took it on the chin that's for sure.

Yep
We were up 6-0 when it should have been 20-0
Or at least 17
We also set futility records yesterday as far as "most time of possession" not equating to victory, etc ...
I kept thinking early when we were dominating, that "this is exactly what the Jags did to us"
We had two weeks of coming back from double-digit deficits
Even those two weak teams put the points up early on us.
If we had, it probably would have been enough, even once TB started to play.
It was basically our previous two weeks in reverse, except we never even pushed TB into panic, due to our lack of finish.

You're damn right. I enjoyed seeing our success with the run early - against an incredibly stout run defense - maybe the best in the NFL. Apparently so did Kubiak as he seemed content to just keep running. This was a mistake that I would expect from a naive and/or brand new coach. The book had been written on how to beat the Bucs and it was with the deep ball. How many shots into the endzone did we take once we crossed midfield? The Bucs 40? NONE. We just kept pounding the ball (albeit with success). How did that work out in the long run? It didn't. You need points to beat the Bucs. You need touchdowns. That's touchdowns as in PLURAL.

Kubiak (and possibly Zimmer, I don't really know if he has any say on the offense or not, which in itself is strange because he's the head coach and not the defensive coordinator) decided that he was going to show that we could run against a great run defense, and he succeeded at that. Good for him. Next time try to win the game instead. Over halfway through the fourth quarter we only targeted Jefferson and Thielen a total of 9 times for the game. Gross.

I'd like to flip the script on a couple of things.

Running on 2nd and 1 after a 9 yard run. I feel like we run 80% of time here...often for just the yard. I go PA pass here more...flip.

Running on 2nd and 10 after an incompletion. Flip that from 80-20 as well.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/cap/2021/

If we draft and sign our first rounder in 2021 (spotrac currently estimates #20 at a cost of $2.5 mil) with our current roster of players under contract in 2021 we'd be about $8 mil over the cap right now. That's without Harris, Wilson, Todd Davis, Rashod Hill, a backup QB, Bret Jones, Dakota Dozier, Hercules, Odenbingo, Jaleel Johnson, Chris Jones, Beebe and Tajae Sharpe to name just the ones that play a bit (or more) right now.

We need space so someone(s) gonna have to go. Here are the choices:

Cousins: Cap hit $31 mil, dead money $41 mil, he ain't going anywhere

Hunter: Cap hit $17.75, dead money $12 mil, he ain't going anywhere

Barr: Cap hit $15.5 mil, dead money $7.8 mil, could save $7.7 mil. He probably stays because we're losing Wilson and Davis. Fire Spielman

Rieff: Cap hit $14 mil, dead money $2.2 mil, could save $11.8 mil. He probably goes for the money which is a shame he's had a great year. Ezra will probably be decent at LT

Thielen: Cap hit $13.5 mil, dead money $5.4 mil. He ain't going anywhere. This is a great value contract

Kendricks: Cap hit $12.5 mil, dead money $9.9 mil. Almost no savings and he's probably the best player on the team

H. Smith: Cap hit $10.25 mil, dead money $0. Uh oh.

Rudy: Cap hit $9.5 mil, dead money $4.4 mil. Fire Spielman

Pierce: Cap hit $5.4 mil, dead money $3.0 mil. Good contract. Hopefully he's as good as many think and would have given us more wins in the 1-5 start.

Dalvin: Cap hit $5.2 mil, dead money $22.2 mil. Our grandkids' grandkids might not live to see the end of this contract. Stay healthy my man!

Shamar Stephen: Cap hit $5.1 mil, dead money $1.3 mil. Consistently above-average, solid depth, keep him

Bailey: Cap hit $3.8 mil, dead money $2.1 mil. Lord have mercy.

Bradbury: Cap hit $3.5 mil, dead money $7.6 mil. He's bought and paid for so I guess he's our center. I thought he improved throughout the season. Would have been an excellent 3rd-round pick

Everyone else has such a small cap hit that it doesn't merit discussion.

So even before we make tough cuts to even get to even with the cap that we're currently set to be $8 million over for 2021 I looked at the 2021 roster and these are the positional needs:

a WR3
a starting S
an RB3 (dime a dozen - easiest fix)
2 starting guards
2 backup guards
a starting OLB
a backup QB

Our draft picks can probably fill one starter (pick OLB, S, or G), the WR3, the RB3, and the backup guards. Outside of that - we're screwed for 2021. Assuming we'll start Ezra, G, Bradbury, G, and O'Neil on the line we'll have the $11.8 mil savings from cutting Rieff. Rudy saves us about $5 mil and we'd be fine with Irv and Conklin. Harrison Smith would save $10 mil but then we just need another starter anyway.

We're going to be missing quality at starter for some combo (2 of 3) of G, OLB, and safety.

I talked about Barr being back next year with Pierce and Hunter.
I am totally fine with cutting him, if it makes sense with the overall cap situation
He's been decent, but a lot of us think he has just never played to his talent level.
I guess PFF has historically graded his run D strong, but honestly I question whether he is worth the money
It probably says something that the one team that wanted him was the Jets

I think it' comes down to how the rest of our D looks.
The question is there someone out there better? Or at least a better value?
That may be tough.

We could draft a LB in the 1st round, if some stud falls to us, but I would really prefer we spend our top 5 picks on o line and D line.
Yes, Pierce and Hunter are nice, but we need more. It's not enough

Also - aren't there grumblings, Hunter wants a "new " contract already? That could get ugyly.
Does he demand a trade?

Sometimes, Kirk creates his own pressures, but nevertheless

According to PFF, Kirk Cousins was pressured on 22 of his 47 dropbacks.
Brady was pressured something like 3 LOL

Allowed pressures and pass blocking grade for the OL:
Cleveland 8 (32.0)
Dozier 4 (31.9)
Bradbury 2 (77.9)
Reiff 2 (76.7)
O'Neill 1 (58.7)
Hill 0 (81.2)

Irv Smith Jr. was PFF's highest-graded tight end in the league this week (92.6 grade). Still not 100 percent healthy, he caught all four of his targets for 63 yards and a touchdown and blocked well in the running game.

(Will Ragatz on Twitter)

Conklin and Irv were very good.....bye Rudy.

Agreed, Conklin has proven more than capable as a receiver. We can't pay Rudy for a couple of nice one handed snags during the season.

Isn't it a given the cap is going to take a huge hit next season because of the lack of fans this year?

The owners are not going to just bend over and eat that loss.

Resigning Rudy and Barr was stupid. I don't like that much dead money, especially for Barr. Cooke is great, but that contract isn't cheap to get rid of until 2024. Rieff is expensive, but at least he's earning it. Harrison Smith is either very good or dog crap and it's been too much of the latter lately for what he's paid. Yesterday seemed like a lot of dog crap from him from what I recall.

We're in cap hell, especially if it goes down next year.

I read one report that says it will be 195M and be stagnant for a few years. I think David F is using a 180M for the cap next year?

Even considering the playoff push (however slim it looks), I get some youngsters some PT down the stretch to see what we've got. Watts at 3T (looks like most his PT has been at NT). Udoh at RG. Gotta have a better idea of what we have in the trenches. I think Wilson will cost too much and Barr's cap hit is too high for a change there, I put LB lower on the list. I gotta think a guy like Reiff has some trade value. The other big question mark is corner (crazy with all the draft capital we've spent). I don't think Hughes is back, are we seeing enough from Boyd, Hand to be ok. I like Gladney and Dantzler quite a bit, who is our other starting outside CB?. Assuming a line of Ezra, G, Bradbury, Udoh, ONeill. Assuming Harris is not resigned.

LG - need a step in ready guy.
S - need a step in ready guy.
Developmental QB
DE - Is wonnum good enough to move into a starting spot?
CB - Hand/Boyd?
WR3 - Bisi and Beebe just aren't good enough in the modern world.
Development S - Smith replacement.
3T - Watts and a rotation enough?

That's my way too early list. 2 immediate starters have to come from that draft and we better get some great continued development (ie guys like hinton and Samia for line depth) for us to improve next year.

Do we get a draft pick if they let Harris walk as FA?
