I want to say that Tyler Conklin is making me a believer.

That TD run was a thing of beauty. He catches the ball, and does something with it after the catch. and doesn't just go down on first contact. Rudy would've been tackled on that play.

Plus TC is a better blocker...

More complete package and more consistant than Irv Smith Jr.

He's shown it in the past two seasons as well. In those two seasons we gave him all of seventeen targets which he turned into thirteen catches for 135 yards. This year we've given him fourteen targets which he's turned into twelve catches for 123 yards and a TD. We took him in the fifth round of the 2018 draft. Next year will be the final year of his four-year deal and only now are we figuring out he's as good or better than Rudolph.

Fire Spielman. Fire Zimmer.

31 other teams passed on him 4 times at least.

Should all their coaches and GMs be fired too?

I think his point is that the Vikings have had him on their roster for three years now and are just now figuring out what he can do. Even then it's only because of injuries.

I think you guys are making a bit too much about one play. Given they see the kid in practice every day, I'm pretty sure they have an understanding of what he can and cannot do.

It was a nice effort, I'll give him that. I've seen Chad Beebe make some nice efforts, but I don't want him on the field on every play as a result.

No. We got him. We've had him. They get to see him all the time. Our guys - not the other teams. We barely know a damn thing about him because he gets only a dozen or so targets per season. It turns out he's pretty good. Now write that down and stick it in an envelope and mail it back to 2018 or 2019 when that information was the most valuable.

I've seen him break tackles and get YAC on his few targets of 2018 and 2019. Yes of course let's not enshrine him in the hall of fame today but it appears he has talent.

Lost in the mess of Sunday's game, RT Brian O'Neill DOMINATED Khalil Mack. 52 only had one pressure all day on 75. His half sack was when the Vikings blocked him with Gronklin and Irv Smith.

I've made the same observation about Oli Udoh. He gets no chance to play. Even though Player after player fails at G for this team. Why not give Udoh a chance? Well...Same goes for Conklin. He only gets a chance when everyone else gets hurt but time and again makes the most of those chances.

Perhaps he would not be as effective in a more frequent role. but who knows until they try?

With Rudy overprices and aging, Irv Smith talented yet inconsistant. Conklin hopefully can step up and take more reps next year...

We don't need to make TE a need this offseason, but it's likely Rudy is on his way out for cap reasons, and Smith hasn't been dependable enough yet in two season to take the job. Conklin has shown signs he can step up and do the job.

So

If the rumors that Hunter wants to be the top paid DE in NFL are true,

I'd be inclined to try and trade him for a top 5 draft pick (Dallas?)

And take Wilson with the pick.

Then best OL next (or move back a little and get 2 best Guards with the capital).

Just dreaming.

First we need to dump Spiels and Zimmer.

Possibly another dream...

We'd need to draft a top DE too or do you plan to go another season with no pass rush?

Very true.

Wonnum and Odin ain't enough.

Change plan to Best Guard and DE with draft capital gained from trade back from #14
(or whatever it is) hopefully higher with 6-10 record.....

Funny you guys talk about that.
Did you watch the Giants Cle game last night? They were talking about how good the Giants D line is vs the run (and they are), but how they need a pass rushing DE to take their D to another level.

I was actually thinking how it would make sense to trade Hunter.
It's questionable whether he wants to be on the team, and apparently there is a contract rift with the team.

If you could trade him to the NY Giants for their 1st and 2nd rounder....would you do it?

I would. I have questions too about his long term health.
Anytime you have spine and neck issues.....not good.
Trading Hunter for 2 top picks could be a way to start rebuilding this D.

Absolutely, in a heartbeat, to the bold above.

But that would be crazy for a guy coming off neck surgery and wanting to set a new market level for DE's.

I would, however, entertain trying to trade him for a top 5 pick in the 2021 Draft.

I think the combination of Smith and Conklin make Rudolph easily expendable.

Cousins uses them well enough, and Rudoph’s production v s cap cost is ridonkulous.

Bye bye, Kyle

As far as Daniele Hunter..

Neck injury and salary demand...
Get real.. trade for precived value..

Don’t look back.

If we can ditch Everson Griffin, with no regerts, , then Hunter is no better or worse..

It just means we find a replacement with cap saved.

Everson Griffin is 33... and was tailing off.
Danielle Hunter is 26... in his prime... maybe the best rush end in the league... and could get better.

Not exactly apples to apples.

[edit]
For all the "Danielle wants out" or "Danielle wants more money"... he hasn't said anything... and he doesn't have any leverage.

I'm grudgingly ok on a trade if you get a king's ransom... otherwise, force his hand.

And what if we give him a good value contract..

The the disc issue in his neck crops up in game 4 of his new deal..
The cap hit to get an injury settlement would be crippling..

Injury doesn’t care how young or old you are and up and coming or on the downside...

I don’t hold it against him to want to get paid, but a multi year deal that ties the teams hand like Cousins has?

No thanks

Everyone says that Hunter has a very team friendly contract. Obviously the Vikings didn't get value this year due to the injury, but he is an elite player at a premium position- one that traditionally teams will invest a very high first round draft pick for.

The extremes are hilariously unlikely, but it's still crazy that with two games left in the season, the Vikings' first round draft pick could mathematically be anywhere from No. 5 to No. 32.

(Will Ragatz on Twitter)

I'm thinking that it will be in the lower teens, but we'll see soon.

Eight players didn't practice today and four others joined the injury report for the Vikings. I guess it doesn't matter much any more.

If the Vikings could win the next two games their chances of getting into the playoffs increase to 32% according Five Thirty Eight. Nah. It's over. We have to be real at least a bit.

So Standard Operating Procedures for this regime...

How good a player is seems to have little to do with it. Salary and draft status are king.

With this regime, whoever they deem the starter stays there through horrible play game after game as the season collapses. No amount of holding, false start, and drive killing penalties matter.

I like what Philly did with Wentz in benching him. Some here advocated for picking Hurts in the draft. Sometimes you need a spark off the bench to get a team going. Really interested in seeing what unfolds for the Vikings draft next year.

We'll probably end up with a record 18 picks, with 13 of them between rounds 5 thru 7.

Lost in the mess of Sunday's game, RT Brian O'Neill DOMINATED Khalil Mack. 52 only had one pressure all day on 75. His half sack was when the Vikings blocked him with Gronklin and Irv Smith.

Purple FTW on Twitter

This caught my eye and made me think. Mack was shot out of a cannon after the Bears picked him up but he's been pretty quiet recently compared to that period. Hunter versus Mack the past 2 years, not counting this year.

Mack - 90 total tackles, 21 sacks, 1 int and 11 FF's

Hunter - 135 total tackles, 29 sacks, 0 int and 3 FF's

Obviously the FF's are big for Mack but you can easily make the case that Hunter is better overall.

Hunter should only be moved if it will lead to drafting a stud QBOTF.
