Lawd!

Last year's special teams were dismal, ranking average, at best, in key categories like:
kick return average (16th),
punt return average (last),
punt coverage (23rd),
kick coverage (24th),
field goal percentage (last), and
extra-point percentage (29th).

Only direction one can go from here is UP!

https://www.startribune.com/vikings-training-camp-position-preview-special-teams/600081285/

In many cases your best special teams guys are also your backups I think we had more than our share that got pushed into regular duty which meant that lesser guys manned their spots on special teams

That's a good thought. Probably why the Twins special teams suck so much this year as well - can't keep anyone healthy

Legally I doubt they can.

But they can make it extremely difficult on people who don't.

Its like here in Vegas. If you're a card dealer or a stripper you don't HAVE to get a vaccination. But if you don't, you need to be tested before every shift. And that's on your dime.

What if I’m both?

Twyman waived.

The Vikings have waived 6th round DT Jaylen Twyman with a non-football injury designation.

Twyman, who was shot four times earlier this summer in Washington, D.C., will revert to the non-football injury list should he clear waivers.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) July 26, 2021

Jaylen Twyman, a Vikings defensive tackle who was shot while in Washington D.C. this offseason, has been waived by the team with a non-football injury designation.

As reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, Twyman will revert to the non-football injury list should he clear waivers.

The rookie defensive tackle was visiting his aunt in Washington D.C. when he was shot four times. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Twyman does not need surgery and X-rays were negative. He is expected to make a full recovery as well.

Twyman was expected to report to camp, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. Rosenhaus was asked if the rookie would be placed on the non-football injury list once he reported. Rosenhaus wrote to Tomasson that he’s “not sure” what the Vikings might do with him from a roster standpoint. Well, now we know.

Twyman is a promising prospect who, when fully recovered, could find his way into the defensive line rotation as a penetrating three-technique tackle.

i have to say, watching highlights of Westbrook and smith-marsette - ihmir looks like the better product...more confident, aggressive, willing, faster - better at every level...i think we needed another receiver so i'm happy with the pick up of Westbrook for the price, but ihmir is the man....

no way beebe makes the final 53...keep johnson, and chisena if we really need his st play....

kene nwangwu was a wasted pick - he'll never be an nfl rb and he won't translate into a top nfl kick returner...Abdullah is much more valuable as a 3rd down option and we don't need four rb's....

pierce, Tomlinson, richardson and watts at dt...weatherly moves inside on passing downs...everyone else goes....

surratt or dye might work as barr's replacement next year, but eric wilson was a better athlete than both of those guys, but like Wilson they can't get off blocks to play the run...we need a physical presence as our 'base' linebacker - vigil stays and connelly goes to the practice squad to replace vigil if needed....

Nwangwu has measurables similar to Jerrick McKinnon. Maybe he develops, maybe not, but they can watch him for a couple years.

A faster Jerrick McKinnon. I don't get what convinces Rat that he won't be good at returning kicks. I'm expecting him to be good at it.

to me, nwangwu doesn't look like a natural football runner - he runs too upright and doesn't have the shiftiness to make tacklers miss...runs through big holes and uses his straight-line speed for big plays...doesn't set up special team tacklers and/or manipulate them the way a cordarrelle patterson does on kickoffs returns....

mckinnon is not as fast, but more shifty...also, nwangwu only had 744 total rushing yards and 7 receptions over four years in college - and he played in games every year....

i don't see nwangwu with any upside - he's not a mckinnon type....

Vikings and OL coach Rick Dennison have reached an agreement that allows him to remain with the team, per source.

Courtney Cronin@CourtneyRCronin
ICYMI: The Vikings placed rookie kicker Riley Patterson on the PUP list yesterday. That leaves Greg Joseph as the only kicker when Minnesota opens camp Wednesday. Given these circumstances and the inexperience among Patterson (rookie)/Joseph (last kicked in a game in '19), it seems reasonable to think the Vikings will aim to bring in a veteran with more experience to create a kicking competition in the coming weeks. We haven't had one of those in Minnesota since training camp in 2019.

Tom Pelissero@TomPelissero
Aaron Rodgers has arrived at Lambeau Field.

I doubt this firing will have much (if any) negative effect on the Vikings performance this season. Heck there's probably an OK chance that it HELPS a bit. In 2020 the dude was like 'Let's start Dozier and Elflien. Elf's hurt? Put Samia in.'

Another Donald Trump casualty.

It's amazing how many liberal heads Trump still lives in. You would be better off with the rona, you might kick that disease.

I was just going to post this, but you beat me to it.

I'm glad Rodgers has reported. Good for the Puke calling his bluff. It's so much more fun beating the Puke with Rodgers than without.

Rat thanks for responding. He didn't get a lot of carries, but he averaged 5.7 YPC IIRC. Herschel Walker had almost no shiftiness and ran upright, but used his straight line speed and was a very good kick returner. I think Nwangwu will be good time will tell.

Agree on Nwangwu. He really doesn't bring anything to the table.

Both Suratt and Dye are extremely athletic but neither will be able to play SSLB without getting swallowed up on running plays like Wilson did. IMO Barr's replacement isn't currently on the roster.

For sure. It would have been their best unintentional offseason move.

(best intentional move was allowing Hunter's agent to blurt out on the phone, 'they totally caved! You win!' when they offered the team friendliest deal in sports history)

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings and assistant coach Rick Dennison have found a solution for him to remain with the club despite his unvaccinated status prohibiting from interacting with players, agreeing to contract terms with the 63-year-old to take a role as senior offensive advisor.

The Vikings announced the reassignment Tuesday, the day before their first full-team practice of training camp. Phil Rauscher was promoted to fill Dennison's offensive line coach position, after serving as his assistant last season. Ben Steele was hired as assistant offensive coach. The running game coordinator title that Dennison also carried will be dropped for now.

Dennison, the Texans' offensive coordinator from 2010-13, was hired by the Vikings in 2019. This will be his 27th year on an NFL coaching staff.

“It was important we use him as a resource,” head coach Mike Zimmer said, "but also give him a chance to work.”

Both Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman declined to divulge Dennison's reason for not getting the COVID-19 vaccine, despite strict league-wide protocols for those without it. Zimmer said it's possible Dennison would get it later.

For now, all of his collaboration with the staff must be virtual. He'll help the other offensive assistants evaluate players and devise game plans, as in the past, but he won't be able to have the hands-on work with the offensive linemen he's drawn praise for throughout his years in the NFL.

i have to say, watching highlights of Westbrook and smith-marsette - ihmir looks like the better product...more confident, aggressive, willing, faster - better at every level...i think we needed another receiver so i'm happy with the pick up of Westbrook for the price, but ihmir is the man....

no way beebe makes the final 53...keep johnson, and chisena if we really need his st play....

kene nwangwu was a wasted pick - he'll never be an nfl rb and he won't translate into a top nfl kick returner...Abdullah is much more valuable as a 3rd down option and we don't need four rb's....

pierce, Tomlinson, richardson and watts at dt...weatherly moves inside on passing downs...everyone else goes....

surratt or dye might work as barr's replacement next year, but eric wilson was a better athlete than both of those guys, but like Wilson they can't get off blocks to play the run...we need a physical presence as our 'base' linebacker - vigil stays and connelly goes to the practice squad to replace vigil if needed....

Rat thanks for responding. He didn't get a lot of carries, but he averaged 5.7 YPC IIRC. Herschel Walker had almost no shiftiness and ran upright, but used his straight line speed and was a very good kick returner. I think Nwangwu will be good time will tell.

Ay Caramba!

That's your argument? 'Hershel Walker good ... therefore ... Nwangwu good too.'

But does Nwangwu talk about himself in the third person. That's what we really want to know.

thebigo want's to know.
