Ya know what's nice? Having an offseason where our biggest concern is whether or not our defensive FA signings work out, and if our oline performs up to expectations.

Compare that to a certain team that's watching their MVP QB muscle his way out of town...

The gist of Pager’s initial over-the-top frothy spilling over of FA optimism was: “Based on EVERY slam-dunk defensive FA signing under Zimmer, I expect this season to be more joyful than the coming Rapture.” (His below-avg assessment, not mine)

You can argue the intention / expectation / value of past FA signings all you want ... bottomline is, Joseph was the only above avg fa addition under Zimmer to come through FA, and if you remember right, it took him 1-2 seasons to start playing at a high level. I had forgotten about Captain M ... he started slow as well.

There should be optimism, there’s a real good chance the defense will be greatly improved. I don’t think Zimmer or Spielman’s FA track record ensures that.

Agree, Joseph was the best of them.

At first it was whether they worked out. Then he introduced "value", labeled UFA signings as extensions, etc.

Let's be happy for Pager that all the FAs met all his subjective criteria.

The board is set ... the game begins ...

Pager's attack strategy is moving his pieces back and forth until they line up in their same starting position ... give him credit, its especially hard to do with pawns ...he is thrilled with no outcome.

(Phil attacks by trying to move pieces on different boards in other games he was not invited to ... his pieces never actually move)

Meanwhile, our hero bides his time before springing like a huge jungle cat to claim argumentative victory.

That's my interpretation.

DAMN! I wish the Vikings had someone as adept at breaking down X's and O's as you.

The self proclaimed hero never submits any original content. Pretty easy to be the peanut gallery.

My original content included the statement that we don't sign many FA. I'm not the one including trades, players whose contracts haven't finished.

Getting all worked up because someone has the temerity to respond?

This will escalate until someone tells you to relax, then it will defuse.

I'll preemptively do it and move on. "Relax".

True statement.

When the offseason started, I thought we'd have one Stephen-like former player resigning or whatever you want to call it. And then draft one OL in the first three rounds of draft. All indications from the fossil record predicted it.

First week of FA ... Rudolph Reiff Bailey Stephen released, Weatherly signed.

Right on schedule.

Then Tomlinson, Peterson, etc.

Added to the returning players ... even if you're like me and don't have any feeling about players like Cole Woods Vigil ...

we have done a lot with very little cap space.

I am working really hard at harassing Pager and Phil, to help keep my expectations in check.

Don't forget Captain Munnerlyn.

Most of the D has been comprised of draftees with gaps filled by vet FAs. To say the vet mins worked out is a stretch.

Joseph - played well on his initial contract here. WORKED OUT.
Richardson - barely played to his $8M contract. Didn't appear to prove much beyond a few flashes in a prove it year, although all it takes is one team to see greatness. DIDN'T WORK OUT.
Stephen - cheap starter in over his head and everyone knew it. WORKED OUT (not his fault he started; played to his low ceiling expectations).
Barr - he was a UFA and he hasn't moved the needle since. HASN'T WORKED OUT.
Pierce - TBD.
Munnerlyn - about what was expected. WORKED OUT.
Newman - cheap 40 year old stopgap whose guile helped but, predictably, got burned deep. SORTA WORKED OUT (but that's not saying much).

Mixed bag.

I'd put Newman in the WORKED OUT catagory. He played pretty well for his age and helped teach Zim's system to the other DB's. I think he even played a few games at S when we had some injuries there.

Exactly. He played great in 2016 and solid in 2017. For a total of $5M.

The only one I would say was maybe a push was Richardson. But I still wouldn't call him DIDNT WORK OUT.

You just said Newman was 66th rated in 2017. That isn't "solid".

He "sorta" worked out. Hold the fort, stopgap until Waynes got up to speed.

If you like "value" signings that consist of being cheap and mediocre then more power to you. With that, Stephen is you personal All-Pro.

You don't think a low-end 2nd corner is solid? WE would have killed for that last year. I like how you ignore that he was top 10 the year before.

Again for a little over 5M for those two years.

Very subjective

Relax, wow.

He was not top 10 and anyone with eyes saw that.

And you're saying Barr was not a FA? WOW, talk about cornering the market on personal subjectivity.

Keep shuffling your "value" pawns. Create your own "All-Value" team of scrubs for all I care.

Both you and I are part of the peanut gallery.

I don't proclaim actual victory or original content ... I can't make my 'jest' any over-sized bigger or more obvious.

I do make outlandish statements and argue with florid language to try to make my input taken less seriously.

Which is a failure sometimes because of my weird sense of humor.

You've seen my train running off the tracks many times before ...

I'm surprised you got worked up over it.

I have no issue with Pager being happy about the signings....hell if I pulled up the starting lineup between the two years there is an obvious and vast roster improvement......(everyone is a paper champion now)

Things must be ok in Viking land if we are arguing about retired players and short term FA that are long gone. I guess we can go to discussing Jared Allen for a 1st and 2 3rds....

He must think he is going to get starter salary this late in the game? He could get an extra million after June 1st....but I doubt the Vikes offered any more then the minimum right now.

The guy makes plays. 4-5M isn't unreasonable.

If we can fit him and Geno Atkins under cap after June 1st, that would be a nice ending to the off season acquisitions.

Definitely going at a slow pace.

Zimmer says he knows something.

And then we bring in Breeland for a visit. But, we give him a low ball offer.
