Did this just happen, or does everybody know about this. I just learned.

https://kstp.com/minnesota-sports/mackensie-alexander-returning-to-vikings/6055091/

That is interesting, if it's true. He's good covering the slot receiver.

Courtney Cronin@CourtneyRCronin
It's a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum (along with a signing bonus) for Alexander, according to league sources.

That's pretty cheap for a servicable player like Mac.

This should also rule out Zim banging on the table for a 1st rd cb.

A pre-emptive strike to keep him from doing that maybe....

Vikings sign Xavier Woods, a safety from the Cowboys, according to Ian Rapoport. One year for 2.25 million.

Going to be a free for all. Not sure what the cap will be but we're kicking the can pretty hard so not sure how big a player we can be.

Love the Xavier Woods signing.

Boy, the pieces for a really stout defense are coming together quickly in one offeason.
We might go from the worst in the division to the best just like that!

Pencil in a couple of unproven defenders into starting roles. Because they signed warm bodies at the positions, we have fewer needs!

Bizarre they haven't anything for offense outside of Cole. I guess Zimmer said he doesn't want any more rookies on defense so it will be an all-offense draft.

Peterson, Mac, Tomlinson in addition to Hunter, Pierce and Barr. That's six new solid or better starters ... four of those already groomed in 'the system' (technically, Pierce counts even if its just his nose in the playbook). Stir in Kendricks and Smith ... that's a pretty flippin' crazy upgrade for one year.

With long-in-the-tooth back-ups DL Weatherly, Mata'afa, Homes, LB Vigil, CB Hughes and freshman / sophomore draftees DL Lynch, Wonnum, Wilekes, Watts LB Dye, Smith, CB Dantzler, Gladney, Boyd, Hand and S Metellus,(maybe Hand) ...

If it's not a DE or S in rounds 1-3 ... we may be looking at 89 draft picks this year on the offensive side of the ball.

It's ironic but Spielman 'build through the draft' Spielman made up his mind to fix the defense through free agency, and Spielman 'give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses of rental OL' Spielman has committed to building the OL through the draft.

Go figure.

So add Woods at S.

Xavier Woods suffered from "Anthony Harris syndrome" where his team asked him to play more in the box since the front 7 sucked, which hurt him overall. He was almost 50/50 on box vs deep, compared to about 75/25 prior years.

getting him back out the box should help Woods rebound

Offensive lineman Austin Blythe is close to signing a deal with the Minnesota Vikings.

Vikings Central on Twitter.
(Who reported a false rumor before, so looking for confirmation)

Still not seeing confirmation on Blythe. I will not follow this dude anymore.

Not to say this won't happen, but it hasn't happened.

Not entirely sure how much cap room we have left, but I'd take a run at Jarran Reed if we had enough room.

It looks like we are very busy shoring up the defense for Zimmer and doing nothing to help protect our 30 million dollar man.....
Makes no sense to me to tie up that kind of cap space on one player and then do nothing to help protect him.
Get ready for more under sized zone scheme linemen to get ran over on the way to sacking Cousins.
Same old, same old.....

Yep the ole Denver/ Zone blocking scheme. They HAVE TO KNOW they can’t just bring in a couple guys to plug into the interior of the OLine and throw their hands up and say “We’re good!”. Been there done that with zero success.
Obviously Zimmer is running our personnel department. Gotta say he shored up the Secondary, and the Interior DLine.
Deepest Cornerback room assuming Dantzler, and Gladney progress.
Add another edge rusher and the defense could make a dramatic leap.
They’ve gotta have a plan to fix the OLine. Right?

Mason Cole and Spielman thinks were golden.

Shit is really going to hit the fan when our first 3 draft selections are all defensive players.

It's about Zimmer's legacy as a D wizard. Last year must have been really embarrassing. Just amazes me who much we've thrown in to the secondary since he's been here. It's like it's Denny Green cursing us. It's the total opposite. Damn near all pro's at every position on the O and nothing on the secondary.

If they’re able to pull off the Orlando Brown trade, sign Austin Blythe to a cheap deal, and add someone like Wyatt Davis or Ben Cleveland in the 3rd.

Also add an edge rusher like Jason Owey then you’d have something seriously going on.

Just a thought?

I think Brown is the kingpin. Mason and a rookie LT could be a problem. Definitely need to shore up LG I'm not comfortable with Mason in the least bit.

Owey would certainly be a good get. Hope Hunter doesn't hold the team hostage he is our most important defensive player.

eric wilson is still a free agent....

he seemed to play very well filling in for barr a couple of years back, but last season as a full-time starter for most of the year his weakness in the running game was exposed...we will very likely lose barr next year - could/should we sign wilson cheap and try to coach up his tackling and run game defense?....

'His PFF score was dragged down by his run-defense acumen. He graded at 38.3 last season in stopping the run, and that is rather awful for any defender. And it’s particularly strange because Wilson does everything else with esteem.

Tackling is not his forte – when compared to other linebackers with his skill set. Wilson notched a 12.2% missed tackle percentage in 2020. In 2019, Anthony Barr – the man that Wilson effectively replaced in 2020 – carried a 2.5% missed tackle rate.'...vikingsterritory

Bottomline: We have signed a below average C ‘square’ to fit into a G ‘circle’. It’s what we do.

Does anybody doubt that Spielman smashed all his toys as a toddler? (or that Zimmer ate too much defensive play-doh)

Please! Trade for or draft a G to play G.

If we can sign a couple more DTs to help protect Wilson from having to tackle ... sure, why not.

Besides, would not be surprised AT ALL if we go LB round one ... because preparing for Barr’s departure next year vastly outweighs those silly OL issues this year (every year).

You know ... Barr was Zimmer’s first ... can he ever truly be replaced?

Would you rather have Cole as a backup or Samia? Would you rather have Cole competing at the guard spot where he possibly could be better than at center, or would you prefer a late 6th round draft pick competing?

I expect that we sign a guard yet in free agency who will start and draft another offensive line very early to be another starter.
