Duke about to be #2!

Sadly, I don't think they'll ever be #1 this year as I don't see Memphis losing anytime soon.

And it's unrealistic to think that any team can go undefeated in the ACC.
Duke has surprised me but I think their lack of quality big men will be their downfall.

Definitely agreed. Duke won't win anything this year because of that fact. Their guard/perimeter play is probably second to none, but you need to have an interior presence. I don't think Hansbrough is that good--I keep saying he's Kris Humphries II to me---but Duke doesn't have an answer for him on the inside, for an example.

I'm still bitter Duke didn't get Patrick Patterson, Pete. I think with him, Duke wins it all this year. Which is why I think it was a stupid decision on his part.

YES! Bobby Knight FINALLY steps down.

As a Duke fan, I've been waiting for this for a while. Now Coach K can really gain on him. By my calculations, as long as Duke has "normal" years the next 4 years, Coach K should pass him for all-time wins by the end of 4 seasons from now. Possibly earlier. And Knight is 67. Coach K isn't even quite 61 yet. And he figures to go another 10 years or so. Heck, maybe more. Coach K could absolutely obliterate the record.

Personally, I can't wait!

I haven't read anything on it yet but it would be pretty hypocritical for Knight to bail on him team now. He always preaches that he prepares his kids for life and being responsible ect...

Is it health related?

From what I understand that this is a trend right now having a son trained to take over the job and Bob has his son ready right now.

In typical Bobby Knight fashion, he went out now to put the pressure on TT to keep son Patrick as the head man.
Kind of a "you have no choice, the right guy is already here".
Gives him the rest of the year to prove himself.
Knight was a great coach and teacher of the game.
A throwback who never changed for anyone.
Demanded respect and got it. Didn't always return it.
Helped a lot of kids along the way, good man to many, jackass to many.
He succeeded when he was allowed to do things his way. Miserable when he wasn't.
We'll never see another like him. Which is a good thing.

I guess he is protecting his son then but it seems like an asshole move for the kids he recruited. I never liked that guy.

I believe I heard when he signed his last contract there he had stimulated that his son would be his successor

Like him or hate him, he ran the cleanest program in the country and his players graduated.

Oh, I agree with that. I'm not a Knight fan necessarily, but he sure has a hell of a lot of good qualities. I'd let him coach my kid over Bob Huggins in a heartbeat, for example.

I hate him for some things, but he sure gets a bad rap on a lot of others.

Oh well, I can't dwell on this.

Funny you mention Huggins, one of my favorites. Year after year at Cincinnati, he took players that nobody else would give scholarships and turned them into great teams. If it wasn't for Kenyon Martin's knee, he would have had a championship.

Lawson out tomorrow really is big. Vitale makes his return for that game, can't wait. Vitale is another guy that people love to hate, but he knows his game better than anybody else in the business. Plus, unlike Gumble or Joe Buck, you can obviously tell he loves what he does.

Nothing like a Duke/UNC game. Back in the day, I went to several of them, two at Durham. Talk about excitemenet and atmosphere. They should hand out valium at the gate.

Pete, I actually think Huggins is a great "coach" but as far as life lessons, etc., I think he's pretty bad. His graduation rates were always some of the very lowest. As a pure coach though, Cincy was pretty amazing. I've always been a Nick the Quick fan, and I loved Kenyon in college.

Totally agreed on Lawson. That could be a real key. It's big to me because Nelson is Duke's best defender IMO, and he can help out in the post (he's obviously way undersized, but physical) or on Lawson. If he doesn't have to help Paulus out on Lawson, then that can help them in the post some. Don't know if it will be enough, but it should help.

And agreed on Vitale as well. Totally jealous on your attendance. My best buddy from HS went to Duke and swam for them, and he said for the UNC games, he found a way to sneak through the UNC pool area over to the games. Jealous of him too. If there was one sporting event I could go to, regular season game, it'd be UNC-Duke, without hesitation in my mind.

No matter what, win or lose, they are always classic games. I will have trouble sleeping tonight, no doubt.

I agree with you on Huggins. He was meant to coach, unfortunately he doesn't appear to be good at much else. I'm not a big fan of his drinking and driving either. But, his players wouldn't have graduated anywhere else either. Hell, he did most of his recruiting at the playgrounds.

You call him Nick the quick, I always called him Nick the lip. There was a time when he was one of the very best one-on-one players in the entire NBA. The 16 foot freethrows killed me though.

haha, ya. i am still kind of shocked on the huggins/k state stuff. he kind of made them good now with his recruiting, but a darn quick exit.

i loved nick. agreed on the ft's. even with the lakers' recent championships, i didn't "love" those teams. i like the current lakers a lot better than those even because of bynum, etc. vs. shaq. anyway, obviously nothing will compare to the showtime lakers for any laker fan, including me, but i did LOVE that team with nick/ceballos/eddie jones, etc.

on a college note, i just heard from a buddy that my alma mater pdine has a rumor of hiring mike montgomery after the walberg craziness. that would be quite intriguing. big west coast name. not confirmed or anything yet, but he says there's a good shot.

I always liked Montgomery (NCAA not NBA). There was a time where he was only second to Lute in that conference. Talk about a guy that got the most out of his players.

Unrelated: Shaq to the Suns? How is that going to work? He may actually just stay on the defensive side of the floor rather than even try to run beyond half court. Doesn't make sense to me, but I'm not much of an NBA guy.

Agreed. I always liked Mike in college too. Will be interesting if he is the guy. I'm still disappointed with how stuff went down with Walberg. Sounds like he was practically fired because of an anti-Knight mentality. He never hit anybody or anything, but the worst I've heard is that he had a guy "suck his thumb" in practice for a mistake. Seriously, athletes are so weak to me now. I always liked a drill-instructor type coach, like Knight. Physical abuse is obviously drawing the line, but otherwise, give me the tough guy. But I digress..

Don't mean to turn this into an NBA thing so I apologize for anyone not wanting to read this, but ya, I agree. I don't see how that works at ALL. Panic move if you ask me in response to the Lakers' move for Pau, and I absolutely love it. Shaq is completely done. Another way I look at it is; say the Lakers and Suns match up now with Bynum back. You have Pau/Bynum vs. Shaq/Amare in the paint, which is MAYBE a wash for the Suns at this point. Backcourts overall are probably about even overall, though tough to beat Kobe. But then who guards Odom now that Marion is gone? Diaw? I just don't see how this helps the Suns at all from just about any angle. They essentially add a tiny bit of a defensive presence, though Shaq is barely that anymore, while taking away their glue guy AND basically taking away the main strength of Nash. This move gets them no closer at all to me in the West. They'd still be the 5th or 6th best team behind all of the Lakers/Spurs/Jazz/Mavs and maybe Hornets. Don't get it at all.

Thoughts on the Pau deal, Pete?

ESPN just announced that the Duke/NC game has been cancelled .... no interest apparently.

What other game gets a 10 minute build-up the day before it happens?
Enjoy it fellas, should be a barn-burner.

What a game!

Man, this is certainly not one of Duke's most talented teams, just because of size, but they have really overachieved this year. They just play so damn hard. Fight for EVERY loose ball, rebound, second on defense. I love it. HUGE change in just one year by going from McRoberts to Singler in essence.

I definitely think this might be a different story when Lawson is back for UNC, but for now, I'll enjoy this win. 17-6 vs. Carolina now in the last 23 meetings, including 7-3 AT Carolina. Pretty darn impressive.

Exactly what I saw.
Bunch of scrappers who shoot the heck out of the ball at times.
All the "experts" during the day had said Duke doesn't belong Top-5 because of the size problems.
Glad to see someone overcome those deficiencies with tenacity, and mostly, with brains.
They were just the smarter club last night. Hansbro spent way too much time on the perimeter last night.
Great atmosphere.

Great game. First half was sloppy but overall another great game to watch.

Carolina really struggled defensively and of course they missed Lawson. Ginyard had to play the point at times, which was hard to watch. Even with Lawson back, UNC doesn't play great defense and their lack of consistent perimeter shooters is going to hurt them.

It's funny because Duke and UNC are like exact opposites. Duke struggles in the paint but can kill from the perimeter, while UNC plays well inside but their biggest weakness is perimeter shooting.

For the Duke fans: What happened to Taylor King? Early in the season he was their best bench scorer, now he can hardly get any clock at all. He came in briefly last night and quickly missed two 3's and never came back in. He really is a great shooter though. He must be in coach K's doghouse.
