ORIGINAL: Todd M 4&1 vs 4th&5 vs 4th&10 In a vacuum I'd almost always go for it. But do you have a 4th and 8 play that has a reasonable chance of success? Has the offense been moving the ball well? Are you up? Down. A lot of factors. Most of the time, Im pretty sure it's about game management as much as anything else. In the late third quarter/fourth quarter with the lead, Im sure you are wanting to give your opponent as long a field as possible. Early in the game, you also don't want to foolishly give field position and give short drives for points against, it's not a good message to either your offense or defense. You end up pressuring your offense and confusing your defense, but this is just a coaches view, this discussion has gone on many times as we game plan. Punting is an option, it is a game time situational play, I'd be curious to know what the outcome would be if more coaches took chances earlier in the game, but that is an unknown.
